Familiars and Broomsticks

"You want me to make you a familiar?" Izuku looked at Mina with a quirked eyebrow, Mina gave the Tiefling big puppy dog eyes.

"Please, please, please!! Izuchan! I read in my grandmother's journal a ritual to call a familiar to your service, I tried when i was younger but it never worked, and since you have magic I was hoping you would call one for me."

Izuku let out a sigh, he was trying his hardest to not give in to the pink girl's pleas, but he was slowly giving in. "I don't know, Mina."

"Come on Zu, show us some of that awesome magic and make whatever a familiar is." Denki threw his arm around Izuku's neck with a goofy grin.

"A familiar is a spirit in the form of an animal that serves it's master." Fumikage spoke up from his usual spot, that made Denki smile wider.

"So like an animal butler? That's so cool, hey Zu, make me one of those too please, something cool like a wolf or an eagle."

"Hey I want one of those as well, maybe a spider monkey." Hanta spoke up.

"Hey can I get like a bear?" Eijirou asked the Tiefling, Tenya stepped in.

"It is highly rude to be making demands of your classmate like this."

"Come on Tenchan, don't you want a cool animal partner that can help you in hero work? Like a cheetah, that way it can keep up with you when you are running." Ochaco's words made Tenya give the possibility of an animal partner a consideration, Izuku gave in, he could at least set up the ritual and let his friends try it out, since they didn't have magic it was more than likely they would be unable to call up a familiar.

"Okay, I'll give it a shot." Izuku said which caused the others to cheer. "But I am going to need some supplies for the ritual."

"What do you need, we can get it." Mina was super excited for this.

"I am going to need 10 gold piece worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs. I will also need a brass brazier, it has to be brass, otherwise the spell could backfire in a bad way."

"How much is 10 gold pieces in yen?" Hanta asked, trying to figure out the math.

"It will be about 13,314.80¥, for all the components"

"We don't have that much on us, guess no animal partner for us." Denki was crestfallen at this news, Mina was racking her brain for ideas on how to work around this financial blockade.

"How much charcoal does ten gold pieces buy you?" Katsuki asked causing everyone to look at him.

"How long have you been standing there?" Denki asked the ash blond.

"We've been here long enough to hear your plan, we want to try for an animal partner. Kero~" Tsuyu spoke up next to Katsuki making him jump a little.

"Shit Froggy, where you next to me this whole time?"

"You really need to pay attention to your surroundings." Tsuyu smirked at the explosive blond.

"So how much charcoal can ten gold pieces buy you?" Katsuki asked the Tiefling who took a moment to think.

"About a 100 pounds."

"What about the other stuff?"

"It would get us about 50 herbs, and 100 sticks of incense, but if everyone wants to try it then we have to take into consideration the amount needed."

"I have more than enough incense, Izuku-kun." Fumikage got up from the sofa, putting his book away, he was now intrigued by this ritual.

"Figures you would, big bird." Katsuki said with a smirk.

"If you need 100 pounds of charcoal then I know where we can get some, come along, you too big bird." Katsuki started to walk towards the front door, Izuku and Fumikage following the ash blond with Tenya calling after Katsuki about where he was going.

---

"Woah, they have everything here." Izuku looked around the supermarket as Katsuki loaded two big bags of charcoal into his shopping cart.

"The convenience of modern day, we should be able to find everything we need for the ritual here, and for a relative low price." Fumikage couldn't help the smile forming on his beak watching Izuku marvel at the vast selection of sweets.

"Hey, Deku, stop acting like a yokel and come pick out the herbs we need." Katsuki called for Izuku to come over to the large bins of spices and herbs.

"We will need parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme for the base, then we need different herbs to summon a specific shape of animal."

"So what kind of herb would one need to call, say a timber wolf?" Katsuki tried to ask nonchalantly, Izuku looked among the available herbs.

"We would need white horehound, but there doesn't seem to be any here, the closest we can get would be cinnamon, but that will call a dog not a wolf." Katsuki let out a grumble before getting a bundle of cinnamon and putting it into a bag.

"How about calling a raven?" Fumikage looked over the herbs, Izuku thought about it for a moment recalling his mother's lessons on herbs and their ties to animals.

"We need dandelions."

"What the fuck? Dandelions are not an herb, Deku."

"You can make a tea from them, and they have a lot of good properties for healing, it's not a commonly known herb, Kacchan."

"I saw some dandelions back at the dorm, will does do?" Fumikage remembered that Kouda's bunny, Inaba, loved to munch on dandelions and the animal loving hero grew them for his pet. Izuku nodded his head, he saw that the store carried saffron and lavender which Izuku grabbed some, saffron was used to call simians, and lavender was used to call owls, which Izuku wanted to call.

"Okay, now we need some herbs for Tsuchan, Denchan, Ochan, and Tenchan."

"Do you really think it's a good idea to let Pikachu get a magical animal?" Katsuki asked the Tiefling.

"There's no harm in him trying to call a familiar." Izuku placed the items into the shopping cart and the three of them headed to the checkout, as they approached Izuku spotted a brass wok which he grabbed, this would have to do for the brazier.

---

"I'm impressed Bakubro, you got all the things we need for under a thousand yen." Denki watched Izuku set up the ritual outside in the backyard.

"That's cause I'm not a dumbass like you." Katsuki said causing Yuuga to chortle at Denki's face, Mina was vibrating in place as Izuku finished pouring the charcoal into the brass wok and began to lay a circle around it.

"What's going on?" Shouto walked out into the yard seeing his classmate gathered around something that Izuku was doing.

"Where going to summon animal spirits." Hanta responded, he watched as Izuku conjured a small flame in his hand, lowering it into the wok, the charcoal caught flame.

"Hey, kids, you having a barbecue?" The class of 3-A turned to see Shrike-sensei and Aizawa-sensei standing at the open door of the dorm's backyard.

"What are you doing?" Aizawa asked.

"Uh, we are summoning animal butlers." Denki said rather sheepishly, Shrike perked up.

"Oh, you guys are doing a Find Familiar spell, ah that takes me back to my younger days. I can't wait to see the results."

"Is it dangerous?" Aizawa asked the Shadar-Kai, who waved off his concern.

"Not unless they are trying to summon a demon, which is really funny given that familiars are not beast, but can be Celestial, Fey, or a Fiend, though there is a vast difference between a demon and a Fiend, and don't get me started on the nuances of Devils and Fiends." Shrike was about to go off on a tangent when Izuku interrupted.

"Who wants to go first?" Mina rushed forward before anyone else could react, she grabbed a some sesame seeds, Izuku threw in the parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme then told mina to enter the circle, picture her familiar in her mind then toss the seeds in.

Mina pictured a majestic hawk soaring through the sky as she tossed the sesame seeds in, nothing happened. "Did I mess it up?" She asked the Tiefling who looked confused, the ritual was properly set up and Mina did everything right as far as he knew.

"You seemed to forgotten one crucial thing, kiddo." Izuku looked at his teacher who approached them.

"What would that be?" Izuku asked the shadow Elf.

"In order to summon a Familiar or any other magical creature one needs to have some magic." Shrike's words brought the mood down, the student of 3-A began to turn to head in to the dorms, Shrike stopped them. "How fortunate for you all that I know how to circumvent such things." Shrike pulled out a large ceramic Sake Tokkuri from his lab coat.

"How is getting turnt up going to help us summon a familiar?" Hanta asked the chemistry teacher, Shrike let out a laugh.

"No, this is not for you, if any of you tried to drink this, well who knows what would happen; might make you into a giant, might just turn you invisible, or it could just straight up kill you. This tokkuri is filled with some raw magic that I have been collecting from...well that is my little secret, anyway if one of you can get me a saucer."

Kyoka entered the dorm and came back with a small saucer handing it to Shrike, he thanked her. Shrike made his way to the ritual spot placing the saucer before the brass wok, then he uncorked the tokkuri pouring a small amount of the content into the saucer.

"Woah, that stuff is so pretty." Tooru was fascinated by the shimmering liquid, it was a silvery white that seemed to sparkle as though it was filled with thousands of tiny diamonds.

"Tres belle." Yuuga was very tempted to go and touch the sparkly substance.

"Alright, Ashido, try it once more." Shrike handed the pink skinned girl a handful of sesame seed before stepping out of the circle. Mina held the picture of the hawk in her mind and threw the seeds in the fire, the flame rose up become a bright fuschia before become a low flame and in the brazier was a red-tailed hawk.

"It worked!!" Mina jumped up and down with joy, but soon her celebration was cut short when the hawk spoke.

"Who are you, who lacks the rite to summon me?" Mina jumped back in surprise.

"Holy fuck!? Did that thing just talk?!" Katsuki could not believe what he just witnessed.

"I'm Ashido Mina, and I summoned you to be my partner."

"You lack the Rite." The hawk opened its wings letting out a loud screech before flying up then diving into the brazier, the low, fuschia flame flared up returning to its orange colour and height.

"But...what happened? Why did the familiar leave?" Mina asked confused and saddened by the events that transpired.

"A familiar is not a mindless slave, they can reject the summoner if they do not feel any kind of connection to them. Chin up, my dear. You managed to summon a familiar, in this world with no magic, and you yourself without magic as well, in that take some pride."

"You're right, Shrike-sensei, I did magic!!" Mina's spirit was lifted once more, Denki wanted to go next, he picked up a stick of cinnamon stepping into the circle, Izuku told him that cinnamon was for attracting a dog familiar, he pictured a golden retriever in his mind, Denki tossed the cinnamon stick into the fire and the flames turned a shocking yellow colour before it died down revealing.

"A chihuahua!!!" Katsuki and Hanta burst into a crying fit of laughter at the teacup chihuahua that sat in the brazier, Denki just stared at the diminutive dog with a dumbstruck look, Katsuki approached the electric blond his sides hurting from laughing so hard. "It suits you, Pikachu. Damn that is a pipsqueak of a dog, even by chihuahua standards"

"WRETCHED HUMAN!! HOW DARE YOU LAUGH AT HUACHTAL, WHOSE FOOTSTEPS TREMBLE THE EARTH! I SHOULD DEVOUR YOUR SOUL FOR SUCH INSULT, BUT THEN I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO GET RID OF THE TASTE OF SHIT FROM MY PALETTE." The familiar's voice was like a terrifying storm, causing the students to cover their ears, with a snarl that sounded like a thousand chainsaws directed at Katsuki, the chihuahua disappeared in a flash of yellow fire.

"What the fuck was that?" Katsuki was still shaking from what had just transpired.

"It would seem that our dear Kaminari had summoned a fiend familiar." Shrike was watching Denki with a dissecting look.

"Only you would summon a demon, Pikachu." Katsuki smacked Denki on the shoulder.

"Not a demon, Bakugou, a fiend there is a difference and if you ever called a fiend a demon or vice-versa you would be torn asunder by the offended party." Shrike lectured.

"Anyone else want to try?" Izuku asked, he could see that his classmates looked rather uneasy after the fiend chihuahua had been summoned, Izuku took up some herbs an entered the circle, he pictured an owl in his mind, a beautiful ghost owl silently flying against the pale moon. Izuku threw the herbs in the flames began to flicker into white but then suddenly flared azure blue into a large pillar, Izuku backed away from the intense heat.

The flames died down, Izuku expected an owl but instead there sitting in the brazier was a small dragon, scarlet in color with a long tail ending in a stinger. Shrike let out a squeal of excitements rushing forward. "Izuku do you know what this is?"

"A winged lizards?" Katsuki said looking at the lizard familiar the size of a house cat, the familiar glared at Katsuki it opened its mouth sending out a spark of blue flame towards the ash blond making him jump back.

"This is not a lizard, this is a pseudodragon, a cousin to dragons. They are highly intelligent creatures, capable of using magic themselves, I have read a lot of books on them but never seen one in the flesh."

"Then consider this your lucky day, Shadar-Kai." The pseudodragon spoke out loud in a deep voice, the pseudodragon turned to Izuku, sapphire eyes met emerald ones. "Tiefling, by what name are you called?"

"I am Izuku of the Midoriya clan." Izuku could feel something begin to form between him and the pseudodragon.

"I greet you, Izuku of the Midoriya clan, I am Socrates, Slayer of Socks, Hoarder of Coins, Terror of Squirrels; I acknowledge you as my summoner." Izuku felt that something from before suddenly become solid, a magical connection had been forged between him and Socrates. The pseudodragon flew out of the brazier landing on Izuku's shoulder, he looked over the others with a critical eye.

"I have a great deal of questions, if you don't mind Socrates." Shrike asked the pseudodragon a pen and notebook in hand, his amber eyes shining with scientific curiosity.

"I could be persuaded to answer, for some silver coins."
