Awase Yosetsu — Origin!

his quirk wasn't heroic. it was as simple as that. a few things changed when tsuburaba came around.

popular enough in elementary school. people liked him and he wasn't bullied. he was sporty and lean, underweight or unhealthy some parents would say to their plumper kids. He was fast and fairly smart, but he was the only one who had that one dream. The dream to be a hero.

he didn't know what sparked it, maybe it was a report on the news he'd listened to at breakfast, or maybe a story his friends told him. Maybe it was All Might or Endeavor, maybe Ryuukyuu or Edgeshot or Crimson Riot. He thought about this as he doodled idly on a piece of paper during morning registration.

kosei was in a different class. They never spoke, but they knew eachother somewhat through mutual friends. Kosei was a brown haired boy with a wide array of childhood freckles, goat shaped eyes and one dimple, similar in ways to Yosetsu's two.

at some point their classes did P.E together. Awase and Tsuburaba were put together. Tsuburaba was fun and lively, while Awase was more rough around the edges. You had to be with a low-middle class family and 3 teasing siblings who you would've killed if you had the chance. Yosetsu was well aware of this and stayed somewhat silent during the activity.

tsuburaba came to him during break. He introduced himself and his quirk, Solid Air, and held out his hand with a bright grin. He said Awase's quirk was cool, and it was cool that he could use it without getting hurt. Tsuburaba was fun and lively, and thought his quirk was cool, while Awase was eroding around the edges the more they spoke, in a pleasant, refreshing way.

awase thinks about this as he looks across the classroom at the new boy.

he wasn't very sociable. it was as simple as that. a few things changed when rin came about.

as far as he knew rin came from china. He joined Awase's class on Monday and took Watanabe's seat next to his. Rin was quiet enough, smart and kind. He was fine with listening in on idle conversations. Rin also liked doodling during morning registration he found.

rin ate alone during lunchtimes and break. He didn't seem to mind with his tepid temperament. Sometimes Awase would wonder aloud why he was so fine with everything and everyone. This led Kosei to assume he had a crush on him. Which he did not. Rin had black hair, often held in a bun or braid with long eyes and slitted pupils. It might've had something to do with his quirk.

a while ago awase wouldn't have even thought of speaking to him, but here he was. He sat across from the Chinese boy, almost thinking to save a seat for Kosei, but there wasn't much of a point, after all, the table was empty.

"Yosetsu Awase, my quirk is weld and we probably shouldn't shake hands because when I get nervous I weld things together." He said quickly, without making eye contact with the boy.

The boy cocked his head to the side, his usual narrowed pupils dilating ever so slightly. "Hiryuu Rin, my quirk is scales and we probably shouldn't shake hands because they sprout when I'm nervous." His legs stopped kicking underneath the table. Tsuburaba slid into the empty seat next to Awase, smiling broadly at Rin.

"Kosei Tsuburaba, my quirk is Solid Air and I don't care if we shake hands because it won't change anything!" Right after he finished the sentence he spoons some rice into his mouth. Rin watches aware raise his eyebrows, then smiles to himself. They'd get along well.

Awase thinks about this as he pads towards the U.A doors in his middle school uniform.

Tsuburaba had come at the crack of dawn, panting uncontrollably. Awase assumed he had ran half the neighborhood to his house. "Hi, oh jeez, Setsukkun! I don't think-" Kosei stopped midsentence, straightening slightly. "We have the same allotment times, so,, I came to say,,, whew, good luck!, Not that you'll need it-". Awase sighed, opening the door wider. "Come in," he said, rolling his eyes fondly.

"I can't! I'll be late!" The brown haired boy regained his breath, standing upright again.
"It's barely 7-"
"Bye!" He took off down the pavement, leaving Awase slightly confused. Hiryuu had called, but of course Tsuburaba had to say it personally.

He thinks about this as he doodles on his hand while Present Mic rambles on and on.

Awase glances around, tugging down on his hoodie nervously. He'd just finished the written exam, and those were easy enough. Use the skills you learned with Rin for the robots, or find an off button or something, avoid zero pointers. Improvisation wasn't a great technique. He felt someone nudge him in the side, and he flinched in surprise, sizing up the guy next to him. Large elbows, a few inches taller than him, black hair and straight teeth.

"You're sweating dude, panicking during stuff like this isn't great." He gave his piano smile, and an electric blonde peeped out from next to him.

"Yeah! You aren't all that burly but you seem smart-" The signal to start went off before he could finish, and they both waved to him, then eachother, running off their seperate ways. Yosetsu froze up for a second. Okay, don't panic. He took a deep breath in and paced forward.

"Your enthusiasm is cute-" said the insect looking boy, taking out the two pointer with ease. "-but if your technique is that slow, I definitely won't be seeing you in the hero course." The boy turned on his heel, walking into a dark corridor. He was right. The raven haired boy squeezed his eyes shut in thought. The motive wasn't to destroy the robots, it was to immobilize them, or that's what Present Mic said. His point amount was about 20 right now, and his target was over 35, as an assumption of what would be a near pass. If he rushed a few three pointers with Weld, they'd be immobilized, or destroy themselves breaking free.

That was the plan he'd execute instead of relying on luck. He was speedy enough.

The rest of the exam was bleary. Near the end the massive zero pointer showed up, and just terrorized other competitors. When the stop signal blew, Awase had counted 54 points. He leaned against the wall, breathing in deeply. He only hoped it was enough.

A letter came. Seiji was the one who found it nestled in the catalogues and postcards. Like the responsible older brother he was, he'd given it to Yosetsu immediately, sitting next to him as it played with All Might's message. By the end Awase was digging the heels of his palms into his eyes, sniffling with emotion.

"Setsu?" Seiji asked in concern, rubbing his back. Takahiro and Tori skipped in, immediately giggling at the sight of Awase crying. Suddenly the whole family was gathered by the computer, praising him. When he tried to speak it only came out in wobbly gasps as he tried to stop. God, how hard was it to tell your family you love them?

"You got in!" Tsuburaba chirped, chewing his mochi happily. Awase tilted his head backwards, rubbing the nape of his neck. "I haven't told you that-"

"You didn't deny it." Rin pointed out, earning a curious look from Awase.
"I know you did- you're wearing your victory headband!" Indeed, Awase was wearing a criss cross blue and white headband, which he adjusted subconsciously.
"My what?"
"Your victory headband! You put it on without noticing when you've achieved something cool!" Kosei shrugged despite his happy tone, skipping along like a puppy. "Right Ryuu?"
Hiryuu nodded, pinching the others lips together with a tut. "Speak when your mouth is empty will you?"

Awase sighed, smiling. Tsuburaba shooed Rin's fingers away. "Yeah, yeah, whatever."

"The uniforms are quite expensive, aren't they." Mum raised her eyebrows at the price tag. "They look nice, I'll give them that."

"Probably not comfortable though." Awase remarked, earning a tug on his ear. "Ouch, ouch- okay."

U.A would be stressful.
