"Jason asked me to come." (Whizzer and Jason)

“Remember Jason, You’re going to want to draw your right arm back,” Whizzer instructed as he tried to position Jason. “And extend your left arm, like it’s a scope on a video game gun.”

“Real guns have scopes too,” Jason argued. He’d asked Whizzer for help with baseball, since Mendel and Trina didn’t know how to really play, and Marvin didn’t like baseball. Sure, asking your dad’s ex boyfriend who basically the reason your father came out and left the family with baseball wasn’t usually commonplace, but when was anything in this family commonplace?

“Yeah, well, have you ever shot a real gun before, Jason?” Whizzer stared pointedly at him, and Jason sighed.

“No.”

“Right. So until you have, we’re calling it a video game scope. So you’re going to want to extend it like that one sculpture or whatever.”

“I hate that I know what you’re talking about,” Jason grumbled as he did it.

“Right, now slide your foot there as you less throw the ball, and more glide it forth for a beautiful pass.” Whizzer smiled. “You got it?”

“You bet I do,” Jason grinned, and hesitated. “Uh, Whizzer?”

“Yes, Jason?”

“Could you come to my game tomorrow?” Jason didn’t miss the way Whizzer looked quizzically at him. “I know my dad’s gonna be there and all, but you could, I dunno, show him what he’s missing? And I’d really like your support.”

Whizzer grinned at him then. “Show up my ex and support my favorite kid ever? It’s a done deal, Jason. I’ll be there.”
