what a way to make an entrance
“Mei you have 5 seconds to get downstairs before I kick your ass!” Kenji’s voice roared from the kitchen causing the houses foundation to shake with each syllable. Reluctantly Mei obeyed and stopped staring at herself in the mirror. A barely audible fine slipped from her lips as she teleported from her room to kitchen following the smell of freshly cooked breakfast.
“You feel ready for today?” a familiar voice rang.
“Of course you would eat breakfast at my house instead of you own, thanks for the heads up by the way” Mei raised an eyebrow in the direction of a smirking purple haired girl.
“You should be used to this at this point honestly, also what kind of best friend would I be if I let you go to your exam by yourself?” Sitting at the head of the table Hina shoved the remainder of her food into her mouth, as she made room for Mei’s mother to sit down. Aiko placed her hand on Hina’s shoulder, giving her a stern look which could’ve only meant she wanted her to remain seated. All while making a beeline to wrap her arms around her unsuspecting daughter.
“Angel I don’t know how many times I have to tell you that seat doesn’t belong to me, sit there if you want. As for you Mei baby, you’re going to do so well today your father would’ve been so proud of you”
It may have been 4 years since her father’s passing, but to this day hearing anything about him causes a wave of grief so deep it causes Mei’s usual mockingly playful self to drop to a calm sadness. While her father was still alive he was her best friend, dad and teacher all in one. Ever since the day she told him she wanted to be a hero he took it upon himself to train her as best he could. They would wake up each morning at 6am (no matter what time Mei went to sleep the night before) go on a run together which was followed by sparring and quirk training.
He knew Mei had a powerful quirk that could’ve been dangerous if not properly supported, at first he would make her create simple things such as hair bows and charms for her mother’s bracelet. Eventually she became able to produce other objects such as bikes, though complex objects require concentration and made Mei pass out from quirk overuse more than once. Though her favourite training was always combat because Mei knew that truly powerful heroes have to kick ass without even needing their quirk, which is why Mei had mastered multiple fighting styles just so she could have an edge no matter how much combat training her opponent has had. After training while she showered and got ready for school her dad would cook their family breakfast, then he left to go to his job as a Pro Hero. She loved her dad and he loved her.
“Well that put a massive downer on things, I for one cannot wait for you to get admitted to U.A. so I can embarrass you in front of all your friends, or completely ignore you and pretend you don’t exist. I’ll decide depending on your exam score placement” Mei’s brother winked knowing full well she was about 5 seconds away from throwing up out of sheer nervousness.
“You’re a dick you know that” She countered while jocosely kicking his leg. A deep laugh left Kenji’s lips as he pretended to limp over to a nearby chair. While straightening out white school shirt Hina grabbed Mei’s white and blue school blazer from the couch and threw it at her. Taking that as a hint that they should get going Mei said a quick goodbye to her mum and brother and left hand in hand with her best friend. Normally Mei could just teleport to U.A. but since she was trying to conserve her energy for exam, so for her and Hina there was a 15 minute train ride ahead of them, followed by a 5 minute walk to the school itself.
“I know you’re against it but I can use my quirk on you if you want” Hina offered knowing full well Mei could do with a little help easing her mind.
“Absolutely not, I refuse and if you use it on me I will turn around and go home, then blame my not getting into U.A. on you forever. Honestly I feel prepared I mean I seriously doubt there will be many students who can beat me” For the first time that day Mei spoke with the confidence she usually possesses. She knew she was a bad bitch and no one could get in the way of her achieving what she wanted. Being the No.1 Pro Hero.
“Alright alright I get it, nice to see that my cocky Mei-Bae has come back to me” Hina chuckled which earned her a dirty look. Choosing to ignore her for the rest of the journey Mei stared out the shaking train window and admired the fast-moving scenery. She always loved public transport, it gave her the opportunity to stare at a single spot and just daydream without feeling like she’s wasting precious time, not like there’s much you can really do on a train but daydream.
The train journey finished as did the walk to the school, still hand in hand Hina looked at her best friend with complete adoration as she always did “You’re gonna do great you know that right and I’ll be here waiting for you to finish”
“You don’t have to, I have no idea when this will end and for all we know I just might meet the love of my life and decide I want to run away with them. If that’s the case you might get quite cold waiting for little old me to come back” Mei delivered with a straight face.
“Ha ha very funny as if anyone apart from me is going to love your stupid ass, now go before you’re late” Hina shoved Mei closer toward the overwhelmingly giant U.A. entrance With a quick wave Mei rushed off to her assigned seat in the auditorium, which happened to be beside a short green haired boy with the most adorable set of freckles she’d ever seen. Before she could introduce herself Present Mic began yelling “Welcome to today's examination! Everyone make some noise!”
The room remained so quite that a pin drop would’ve sounded like the blades of an attack helicopter. A singular voice screamed a ‘whooo’ that caused everyone in the room to glare at Mei. Instead of being embarrassed like most might’ve been by the attention, Mei soaked in the stares and lifted her chin proudly while sending a mental message to Hina
‘The exam hasn’t even started and I’ve already got all eyes on me.’
‘Bad attention or good attention? I mean at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because you love it
‘Number 1 that’s rude how dare you be absolutely right and 2 I don’t know Present Mic wanted us to make some noise but no one did so I thought hey why not’
‘Ah so you’re the teacher’s pet at a school you don’t even attend yet, that’s not too bad though now shut up and get back to listening’ Mei chuckled but she didn’t send a message back as she knew Hina would just yell at her to start paying attention
“I don’t know who you are but you’re my favourite student already!” Present Mic bellowed knowing full well that the black haired girl saved him from embarrassment.
He then continued on speaking about the exam but Mei couldn’t focus on that as the green haired boy started muttering something under his breath. Which in turn lead to the spikey haired Pomeranian look alike to scoff a shut up at the mutterer. “How about instead of being an asswipe and telling him to shut up you should use this as hero training and focus, because if this is too distracting you’re screwed and might as well give up now” Normally Mei wouldn’t get involved but she was feeling bad for the boy as he didn’t look like he could stand up for himself.
“What the fuck did you say you extra?!” the Pomeranian spoke up. Well this is going to be interesting Mei thought, but before she could say anything a tall blue haired glasses wearing teacher’s pet stood up and complained to Present Mic about the muttering. Which caused the trio to speechlessly stare at the boy until Present Mic finished and they were handed their arena assignments, she peered over at the boys cards only to find they were all headed for different arenas. A droplet of worry rushed over her as she was going to have to go to the actual exam by herself.
Soon everyone started leaving the hall but before the two boys could walk away Mei shouted out to them. “I’m Seki Mei by the way, but you can just call me Mei” she said with a comforting smile on her face, which seemed to reassure broccoli boy so much so that the worried look he had been wearing that whole presentation left and was replaced by a similar grin.
“I’m Midoriya Izuku and that’s Bakugou Katsuki” Midoriya exclaimed while Bakugou let out a ‘tch’ while he stomped off with his hands in his pockets. Confusion must’ve been smeared across her face as Midoriya asked her what was wrong as they stalked off in the direction of the arenas. “You knew his name, does that mean you know each other and if you do why was he being such a jackass earlier?” Mei faltered not understanding why someone could be rude to such a seemingly pure soul such as Midoriya.
“Aah yeah that’s Kacchan for you, we used to be friends but he doesn’t really like me anymore so he’s a little rough around the edges b-but overall he’s a really good guy!” the boy seemed to stutter throughout his explanation. Just as Mei was about to ask some more questions about this weird ex-friendship, Midoriya said a quick goodbye and ran off to his arena.
Strange, Mei thought but anything regarding Midoriya and Bakugou left her head as she felt someone bump into the back of her and started apologising. Mei turned to see a pink girl with yellow horns and black eyes staring at her from the floor. “Whoa dude it’s all good, are you okay? I’m Seki Mei by the way but you can just call me Mei!” Mei held out her hand and as the girl took it she gently pulled her up.
“Omg of course I’m okay, that’s so nice you care about me and I’m Ashido Mina but you can call me Mina as I know we’re going to be friends” a giggle left Mei’s lips but before she could continue chatting with her new friend Present Mic announced that the battle had already begun because heroes don’t need countdowns.
Mei ran ahead and began using her quirk to channel the energy that flowed through her body into a ball of beaming black matter around her hands and proceeded to throw it at the 3 point robots in front of her. Once the first robot fell victim to her power she began to speed up her kills using her teleportation to quickly find the robots and as she found them some were defeated by the black balls of energy. While for others she created force fields of a similar black shade, around them and proceeded to crush them into a ball as she slammed her hands together.
She was happy the other students were too busy focusing on themselves to notice her eyes going from her usual vibrant lilac to a black so deep it looks as if it sucks in all the surrounding light, because honestly she was tired of explaining her partial blindness to people.
Eventually the exam was over and Mei felt pretty good about her score, she knew she did well in her written exam, so there wasn’t a chance wouldn’t get in. “There’s my main girl, how did it go?!” Hina ran up to Mei grabbing her hands and jumping up and down like a school child, beaming at her best friend.
“Not to toot my own horn or anything but im pretty sure you’re looking at a future U.A. student” Mei sang while walking away toward the train station. As they were walking Mei caught a glimpse of a certain green haired boy walking in the very same direction trailing Bakugou, she told her friend about what happened in the auditorium. Which left Hina thinking the very same thing Mei thought.
This was the very reason why the girls had been such good friends their entire lives. While they were both confident in themselves Mei was outgoing and didn’t care about hurting anyone’s feelings, Hina was more introverted and much like her quirk preferred to comfort people. Her quirk Serene Voice allowed her to put anyone she spoke to at ease, it was the perfect quirk for her as her dream was to be a doctor, what makes a better doctor than the ability to reassure their patients that everything would be okay. “Why don’t you go up to broccoli and ask for his number so you can keep in touch” she enquired while poking her friend in the ribs.
“You my short purple haired princess are full of good ideas today, don’t get jealous when he becomes my new bestie okay?” Mei spoke just before she teleported right next to Midoriya, leaving Hina bending over in fits of laughter.
The boy jumped out of his skin but soon settled when he saw that it was just Mei, his head started running through a list of possible quirks she could’ve possessed. He only managed to think of a few before Mei asked him for his number while explaining how she thought they could be good friends and how she didn’t really want to face U.A. without a buddy at her side.
After successfully getting his number and changing his contact name from Midoriya to ‘Broccoli Baby Boii’ the girls headed out to their favourite ramen restaurant to celebrate a pretty successful day.
A few weeks went past and Mei finally got her hands on her U.A. letter, as soon as she found out it had been delivered she sent a thought to Hina because it was easier than getting her phone and Face Timing her.
‘It’s here holy shit I’m nervous.’
‘Shut up you’ve got this. Now open it there’s no point in wasting anymore time.’
A projection of All Might popped up in Mei’s face announcing that she was accepted into the Hero course with a score of 76 villain points but no hero points, placing her just behind the angry blonde. Just as Hina arrived at the house she heard Mei’s floorboards creaking as she screamed about her acceptance.
Kenji, Aiko and Hina all shared proud glances as Mei getting in wasn’t much of a surprise, as soon as the letter got posted through the mailbox Mei’s mother ordered her favourite take-away which they never ordered because it was too spicy for everyone but Mei and Hina who both shared a love for food that burns in the best way.
“There’s the woman of the hour, oh mighty Mei you’ve done it again” Kenji breathed while curtsying and pulling up the edges of his imaginary skirt. “EW since when do you call me mighty Mei, I hope this isn’t a nickname that’s going to stick because it’s actually disgusting and I might throw up” Mei said barely being able to get the words out as she was pulled into the middle of a hug that pushed all the air out of her lungs, Mei’s family burst into a fit of laughter. The next few weeks before school started were spent listening to Hina’s ramblings, Kenji’s insults and enjoying her mother’s daily family dinners.
While Mei was worried about starting a new school she knew that she wouldn’t be alone because she had the best home support a hero in training could ask for.
