First day of school (discrimination at it's finest)
Chandra woke up with a loud yawn, stretching out the stiff muscles in his arms and behind his neck. He winced when he pulled a muscle or two. He got out of bed and looked around, the rest of his roommates were still sleeping and the clock on the wall said that it was still six in the morning, far too early to wake up considering that he was staying on-site.
'Chandra?' Ron murmured, looking over him with squinted eyes from his own bed.
'Hey, Ron!' Chandra said brightly.
'It’s too early, what are you even doing?' Ron grumbled, rubbing his eyes.
'Getting ready for the day?' Chandra said, phrasing it like he would a question.
'But it’s too early,' Ron complained.
'That just gives me more time to prepare, I mean, it’s the first day of school, I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of everyone, what if I’m late to class?'
Ron shivered, 'Ya, I get where you're coming from, That Professor, Minerva Mcgonagall? She teaches Transfiguration right? And Is the head of our house? I just hope she isn’t our teacher cause she looks really strict, also if she is one of our teachers, lets just hope she isn’t one of our teachers, I’d hate to be late to one of her classes.'
'She’d probably give us a week detention for being late.'
'Yeah, she probably will.'
Then, they’re both shivering at the thought of receiving detention on their very first day.
Chandra looked at the other sleeping figures in the room. 'Should we wake them up? They probably don’t want to be late either and might have some last minute packing to do.'
'Sure, let’s do that.'
OOO
Chandra looked around the Great Hall, some of the students from other houses were sitting with other houses, so Chandra figured it would be okay to sit with Dudley at the Hufflepuff table.
He and Ron made their way to the Hufflepuff table to find Dudley talking with two girls. Then Dudley noticed them. 'Chandra! Ron! Come sit with us!' Chandra gave Dudley a smile as he and Ron sat opposite of Dudley and the girls. 'Guys, this is Hanna Abott and Susan Bones, Hanna and Susan, this is Chandra Potter and Ron Weasley.'
'Hi.'
'Hello'
'Hey.'
'Hi.'
An awkward silence fell upon the area until Susan said, 'You never told me you knew the Boy-Who-Lived!'
'It… didn’t cross my mind.' Dudley stammered as he blushed.
'When did you meet him?' Hanna demanded.
'Since I was one, I suppose,' Dudley said with a thoughtful murmur, the thought had never crossed his mind before.
'What do you mean by that?' Hanna questioned. The girl was clearly confused by the looks of it.
'He’s my cousin,' Dudley stated proudly, 'Of course I had always known who he was!'
Hannah blinked as if trying to get something out of her eyes, and Susan's jaw dropped in surprise. 'Cousins?' they say in unison. The two girls make eye-contact, surprised by the simultaneous reactions.
'I never knew James Potter had a… secret sibling.'
'He doesn’t… Dudley is related from my mum's side.'
'You mean, Lily Potter had a muggleborn sister?'
'No, she's a muggle.'
'Oh.'
'How was living with muggles?' said Hanna, quickly changing the subject. 'I imagine it must've been... distasteful. I mean, how can you live without magic?'
'I wouldn't know how to survive…' Susan said sadly.
'To have no magic and all…' Hanna trailed off, looking too sad.
Stammeringly, Chandra says with a shaky voice, 'W-Well, not really, it's really not that bad. Actually, it's rather nice.'
Dudley chimed in, 'Yeah! I mean, I can live without magic. It’s really not that bad.'
'Oh really? Did you watch those... tervision?' Susan said, making a weird face while trying to pronounce television, like it was hard or something.
'Yes,' Chandra said. 'It's rather easy to live without magic. But no- I don't watch television, I wasn't allowed to. But Dudley is. You can ask him.' He was deliberately trying to end the conversation as it is and he knew it. Ron, who sat between the four of them, looked at the two pairs nervously, as if he’s waiting for a bomb to explode.
'Why weren't you allowed to watch it?' Hanna demanded, almost angry. Chandra found the sentiment of Hanna being angry on their behalf odd, at the very least.
Dudley said, 'Well- It's rather complicated you see, and I think it's best if we just let this slide.
To Hanna, Susan quietly said, 'Well, I heard from Arthur Weasley that those things can eat your brains.' Then to Dudley she replied forlornly: 'Oh. No, it's ok. I don’t mind.'
Hanna continued: 'We understand.'
'Thank you, thank you very much,' Chandra says gratefully. He soon regretted his words.
'See, Hans?' Susan whispered. 'I told you, it's probably because those things eat your brains'
'Those things don't eat my brains!' Dudley shouted out crossly.
Susan, Hanna and Ron said nothing, although they looked at him rather oddly, as if he had swallowed something he shouldn’t have swallowed.
'So, how are you liking Hogwarts so far?' Hanna said conversationally. Besides her, Susan stared at Ron in disgust as he shovelled a heapful of food into his mouth.
Chandra replied to her, 'Great! It's amazing! The beds are great! It’s really soft!' And he was not lying, the beds were softer than his mattress in the cupboard.
Hanna gave him a weird look. 'Well, ours aren't as comfy as home.'
Susan nodded. 'Must be a Gryfindor thing.'
Chrandra shrugged at that. 'I guess so.' And continued to eat his food.
The table was silent for a while, the silence wasn’t uncomfortable per se… but it could have been better…
Owls started to swoop into the Great hall in flocks, Chandra could hear the muggleborns and muggle raised students wowing in the distance at the owls coming in, he was also marvelling at the sight, but in his mind.
Hanna looked quite disgusted at the students wowing for some reason, Chandra wanted to ask why but she cut him off before he had the chance to ask. 'Do these people not have tack? Honestly! I mean, they are just owls, what is there to gawk about?'
'They're amazing! We've never seen them before-!' Dudley exclaimed, it was true, they had never seen anything like this before… when he first heard he would go to a magic school here in UK, he thought that it would be like normal school but they would be taught spells and what not, he never realised fashion and customs were different here… it was like stepping into a foregin country, what was normal here was not normal back home, the reverse was also true.
Susan gave them an incredulous look. 'Really? Not even in the wild?'
Chandra frowned at the thought 'We've never gone to the wild. Aunt Petunia didn't like it.' Besides, there weren’t many forests left in Britain due to deforestation, and they never had the chance to visit a bird sanctuary or something. The zoo trip was his first time he had ever met a wild animal up close.
Hanna then asked the most confusing question of all. 'What about near your Manors?'
Chandra was confused, Manors? Why would they be living in Manors? Only the top ten percent lived in manors and other fancy houses. 'What do you mean?'
Hanna cleared her throat. 'Well you are Wizarding Nobility, your Forefathers and you have seats in the Wizengamot, of course you have Manors?'
Wait, Chandra was Nobility? What? So… Now what? Was he expected to learn boring laws so he could govern the country properly? Perhaps even have a large Estate those rich and influential Vicorian era rich people had?
Susan followed up Hanna’s question with a question of her own. 'What about House elves?'
Dudley shook his head. 'Never had them before, they seem kinda cool tho.'
'Um... I was talking to Chandra.' Susan said with a tone of voice Chandra couldn’t decipher. 'I mean, we understand if you don't have houselves, being muggleborn and all.' She said ‘muggleborn in a slightly condescending tone.’
'Oh. Well,' Chandra started when he saw everyone was looking at him and expected him to say something. 'I've never ever even been close to a house elf. Much less a manor.'
'We live at Number Four, Privet Drive.' Dudley stated proudly.
Hanna looked intrigued. 'Oh! Where is that?'
'Surrey. Surrey, of course.' Chandra said.
Susan hummed. 'That doesn't sound like a place in Albion.'
Chandra started to get a bit annoyed at that, did mages not know basic geography? 'Well, it's not.
Hanna said slowly, in a condescending manner 'Surrey?'
Exasperated, Dudley said. 'Yes. Surrey.'
Susan quietly exclaimed. 'Fascinating.' Has she never been to the muggle world before? Do Magicals not go to the muggle world usually?
'What's fascinating?' It’s just a house? Did Susan also live in manors and what not?
'Oh nothing…' Chandra didn’t like the tone of her voice. 'It's just that…' Dudley looked like he was in disbelief at what was happening. 'Muggles come up with the strangest names for places don't they?'
'So what?' Dudley said with a hint of aggravation in his tone.
Hanna cleared her throat and said. 'I'm on my phone right now, this residence of yours on Maps looks very… quaint.' It sounded a bit insulting to Chandra, Chandra could not imagine what Dudley was feeling… to hear someone say things about their home…
'So what?' Dudley said. 'What were you even expecting? A castle?'
Hanna shook her head in disappointment, 'At this point, I'm not sure what I was expecting.'
'What she means to say,' Susan piped up, cutting into the conversation. 'That well-'
'What does she mean to say?' Chandra said, the words bursting from his lips without much fanfare. He tried to keep his volume low, trying to not draw attention to himself: He didn’t want people to turn to look at them, wondering what made the Boy-Who-Lived so angry and have them have an ill-opinion of him on only his first day. 'And what did they even mean by that?'
'You are the Boy-Who-Lived right? Shouldn't your residence be a bit more... how should I say this without offending you, well, secure?' Susan said. Now that Chandra thought of it, Susan and Hanna’s words sounded… refined. Like they were nobility or had high-ranking guardians or something, they probably also expected him to act high and mighty befitting of his status or whatever rich people do nowadays. Chandra noticed how the girls went out and above to not offend him, but didn’t care if they offend Dudley… his own cousin… was it because he was a muggleborn?
Susan went to pacify him. 'Not that this isn't bad.'
'It's perfectly secure! No one ever found us!' Chandra protested.
Ron came to their rescue. 'You got a point you know?'
'You too, Ron?' Dudley angrily said, as he assumed that Ron was going to go on belittling his home the same way that Susan and Hanna did.
Ron quickly realised what his words implied, and quickly denied Dudley’s well-intentioned accusations, 'What? No! I was just saying that Chandra's got a point, it was secure enough to keep him and you and your family safe for the past ten years, so I don't see the problem with the house. The house looks kinda lovely really, reminds me of my Grandparents place. Me and my siblings used to visit them all the time before their accident.'
Dudley started to calm down and turned a bit pink at his outburst towards Ron. 'Oh. Err... thanks? And I’m sorry.'
'You're welcome and it happened a really long time ago, when I was five, so I really don’t remember much about them.' Ron muttered out the last part.
'So anyways, we were going back to our table.' Chandra says, quickly cutting the conversation short, not fancying being in close proximity with the two girls anymore. 'Dudley, do you want to join us? I want to introduce you to my friends in Gryffindor.'
'Sure.'
OOO
'Good morning students, my name is Daisy Higgins and I will be your class professor and transfiguration professor for this year. Now, before I go any further, I will take the attendance so when I call out your name, please yell out that you are here.'
The attendance took some time, but it wasn’t too long as there were only twenty-four students in the room. Chandra is glad that the professor didn’t even blink when she called out his name. He does not fancy the interaction at breakfast and would despise a repeat of that.
'Right, so the main reason why we have this class every morning is because I will be
Diary,
OOO
'Hello?' Hari said when Chandra came up to talk to him. 'Can I help you?'
Draco gave him a sneer. 'What are you doing here, Potter?'
Suddenly, Chandra’s mouth felt dry. 'W-well, I was wondering if I can talk to you.' He stammered out and looked at Hari. 'Hari, in particular, actually.'
Draco narrowed his eyes. 'Why?' He asked with suspicion in his voice. Honestly Chandra could understand where he was coming from… but Draco was also a huge prat in the tran and before the sorting so…
Dudley piped up. “Chandra wants to talk about Hari about well... the Dursleys. His memories, in particular.”
Hari sighed and turned to look at Draco, “Why don't you do and see what Daphne was up to?”
Draco made a face, like he ate sour candy. “But she hangs out with Pansy!”
“So?” Hari said, Chandra wasn’t sure who Pansy was, must be a Slytherin?
Draco gagged. “She calls me her 'Dracy-poo' or something along those lines…” Ok that was bad, Chandra didn’t like Draco all that much but he shouldn’t be called ‘Dracy-poo’.
Chandra. “Who's Daphne and Parkinson?” Interrupted.
“It's annoying~!” Draco continued while ignoring Chandra’s outburst.
Hari scowled. “Then go bother a 3rd year”
“What's annoying?” Dudley asked in confusion.
Draco gave Hari a concerned look. “Are you-”
Hari sighed. “Just go, I'll talk to you later.”
“He can stay here, I don't mind.” Chandra said. Chandra did mind really, but he had to apologise to Draco because he seemed to be a very close friend of Hari’s so it might do Chandra some good to make amends with the blond prat.
Draco beamed a million watt smile at Hari. “See?”
Hari sighed, “Fine, I guess, you can stay.” Hari turned his attention from Draco to Chandra and Dudley. “So, what do you want to talk about?”
Chandra: Great! We wanted to talk about what happen to you after you well... after you... after the Dursleys put you in the orphanage.
“I-” Hari started before sighing. “Sure, let's talk about that… I actually don't remember anything from before the orphanage… Hit my head on a glass table the first day I was there”
Chandra blinked, he never expected this, that does explain a lot though. “Oh. I... I didn't realise.”
Hari shugged. “Had to go to the ER and stuff..”
Dudley let out a gasp. “WHAT!”
Hari rolled his eyes at that. “Ya, it was so extra…”
“You had to go to the ER?” Chandra was shocked, how could Hari act like this was nothing? He could have died!
“Yes? I'm fine now... It was years ago....”
“EXTRA? You had to go to the ER! You could've DIED!” Chandra nodded at Dudley's words, why was Hari not taking this seriously?
“I don't understand why you have to be so worked up over it? I barely know you!”
Draco looked confused, “What's an ER?”
Chandra ignored him. “But I do! You're my twin!”
Dudley nodded. “And why wouldn't he care? You almost died!”
“I'm fine right? The healer I checked with after coming to the wizarding world said my magic saved me from serious damage.” Hari then turned to look at Draco. “And an ER is an Emergency Room where you go if you got hurt.”
Dudley expanded on that. “Emergency room. It's a system in the hospital that only seriously injured or sick people go to.
Hari nodded. “Ya, that”
“Why are you being so casual about this? You could've died!” Chandra could have lost his twin before he could even meet him!
Hari sighed in a slightly condescending manner. “Dudley... Chandra... What you have got to understand is…”
Chandra got agitated. “What do we have to understand?”
“This is the wizarding world... people here survive a drop from 100m.”
Dudley blinked. “Wow.”
“Oh,” Chandra said.
Hari continued, “So banging my head with a glass table is one of the least threatening things that could happen to someone here…”
“Yeah, magic usually protects its users from serious harm…” Draco continued, with a shrug.
Draco: Did you not know that?
Chandra: You still could've died, Hari. What if you weren't magic?
Hari: But I do have magic? And I am thankful for it of course, but still... If I didn't have magic I would probably be doing physical therapy right now instead of being here at school talking to you two
Draco: Or a coma
Draco: Heard it happens to muggles for the most simplest things…
Dudley: But-?
Hari: But what?
Chandra (snappingly): We're not falling into a coma for the simplest thing!
Chandra (bitterly, as a response): But nothing
Hari: No no, do tell...
Chandra: It's nothing. Nothing you care about and nothing you will ever care about!
Draco: So did you just come here to berate Hari or...
Chandra (starting to leave): No. I wasn't here to berate my twin. It's clear to me, however, that I never should've come here. I'll see you later.
Dudley (looks at Hari sadly): I know this doesn't mean much, but I'm sorry.
Hari: Ok? Bye I guess...
Draco: See Hare? Told you they were weird!
Hari: Not now... let's go back to our common rooms...
Draco: But don't you have a theatre club today like... right now?
Hari: Oh ya! Bye!
OOO
Hari glanced from side to side, looking at the hallway. They are sure that the heavy wooden doors in front of them were the doors to the theatre hall, but it was locked with a padlock and heavy silver chains.
They approached a tall-boy who must be either in his sixth or seventh year here. 'Excuse me, is this the theatre hall?'
The boy nodded and in a heavy Scottish accent, he said, 'Aye. Ye a new student, ain’t ye?'
Hari nodded as a reply.
The boy smirked, blue eyes crinkling. Hari thought that it matched his blond hair well. 'Is expicted from eh profissur. Says we be ruining ‘ir class, eh profissur. She’ll have oor neep an’ wrangle it and gruff us good, eh profissur.'
'Oh.'
'Aye,' the boy said sagely. 'Ge’ ma advice an’ ye don’t be messing aboot wi’ eh profissur. She be a mean one, eh profissur.'
Hari blinked in surprise. 'Oh. I didn’t realise that the theatre professor would be so strict.'
'Nae,' said the boy, shaking his head. 'She’s a mean profissur, but fair.' The boy was pondering over his own words, his expression looking as if he agreed with it. 'Could’ve gone wi’oot ‘er skirlin’ at ma.'
'Right.' Hari didn’t understand what the boy had said.
The boy offered Hari his hand, ‘Ma name’s Angus, by eh’ way.’
Hari returned the handshake. ‘Hari. Hari Potter.’
At that moment, the locks poofed into golden dust, disappearing into thin air. Hari turns and finds themself facing a tall and intimidating woman, with dark brown hair and sharp blue eyes which bore into them.
She flicks her wand and the doors slam open. 'Well?' she questions. 'Get in. Get in now!'
As if a string was pulling on them, everyone immediately entered the room. Hari stopped short, gaping in awe of the theatre. It was large, with a multitude of red velvet curtains hanging from each wall, parted into beautiful arches and curves by golden ropes. The stage itself seemed to have been made from hardwood of clearly high quality, with beams and metal riggings hanging from above. At the sides of the stages, there were horse cutouts that were moving around like actual horses, and sceneries upon sceneries
'This is amazing,' Hari whispered.
‘Ye wai’ an’ see eh’ actua’ production,’ Angus whispered to them, as if telling them a deep dark secret.
Hari nodded, as the theatre professor took centre stage, clapping her hands to draw their full attention.
(The professor’s name is Tina Daggerworth and she’s been in the theatre industry for 10 years now and came to Hogwarts cuz she wanted to spread the joy of theatre, Tina does a little Ice breaker and tells everyone to introduce themselves and stuff, there are 27 students in the club from year 1-7, the last one who is introducing herself is in the same year as Hari and has silvery hair with blue tips)
'My name is Dephini Watson. I’m a Slytherin 1st year and I like candy.'
