School Day Conversations
“Mikael?”
Suddenly feeling the Original squeezing her neck, he spoke. “Hello Doppelganger.”
“But I killed you! You burned!” El wheezed out. Any magical instinct was thrown out of the widow when she saw him.
Mikael leaned forward to where their noses almost touched. “You did.” He spat. “Let me return the favor.”
El screamed, hitting the heavy bag with a huge burst of magic, sending it flying across the garage. Dasher whimpered and ducked behind the weight bench. “Sorry Bud.” The witch apologized to him as her hand rubbed her face. Once she proved to herself that she was indeed in the real world, El pushed out her hand and began lifting the bag with magic, bringing it back to where it was.
Just as it sat back down, Jenna walked in. “Are you okay? I heard a crash.”
“Yeah.” El waved it off. “My magic just popped.”
Her guardian crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t think your ‘magic popping’ is considered a good thing, Elena.”
“Well luckily it was just a one time thing.” The doppelganger undid her wrappings. “Right, Dash?” But Dasher just gave her a snort and walked back into the house, causing El to wince. “Fine. I’m just a little shake’in from the trip, I’ll be alright. I promise.”
“I could help if you told me what happened.” Jenna pushed, wanting to help her niece.
“It was witch business.” El told her.
The strawberry blond cocked her head to the side. “Is that why you took Caroline?” Elena paused her movements, not knowing what to say. Jenna took this as an invitation to continue speaking. “Look. I get that you know future things and you won’t tell us why things need to be done, but you’re still a kid-”
“I’m not though.” Elena turned around. “Let’s be real Jenna, my childhood ended when I woke up in the hospital. It ended when I was thrusted into this life having to make plans that protect the people that I care about, that I love.” She threw her hands up. “And not to mention my mentor hasn’t been visiting me lately or that I’m repeating the same nightmare over and over again-”
“What nightmare?” Jenna questioned. Seeing the look on El’s face, Jenna asked again. “ Elena, what nightmare?”
“It’s just of this really old vampire, okay? I’m fine.” The doppelganger checked the time. “I need to get ready for school, I’ll see you later.”
“Fine.” The human huffed. “But after school we are continuing this conversation.”
“I have work.”
“After work then.”
—-------
“I don’t know what to do.” El told Caroline as they walked in front of the school. “I want to tell Jenna what happened, but I don’t want to freak her out about the whole Charlotte situation.”
“You’re gonna have to tell her eventually.” Caroline shrugged. ”Just rip it off like a bandaid.”
Elena looked at her. “Yes, cause telling my aunt that I murked someone is like ripping off a bandaid.”
“Well I don’t know!” Care squealed, causing the brunette to laugh. “Stop laughing!” The blonde told her, laughing as well.
“Caroline. Elena.” A voice said behind them. Both twisted their heads to see Bonnie walk up behind them.
“Hey, Bonnie.” Caroline greeted her, while El waved.
“What were you guys talking about?” The Bennett witch glanced back and forth between the two.
“About-” El stretched out the word, trying to find an explanation.
“How much she wants to kill Jeremy.” The blonde finished for her. “They’ve been on the outs with each other recently.”
“Oh good.” Bonnie breathed out, not questioning the weirdness from the two. “I thought you were talking about Stefan.”
“Why? What’s wrong with Stefan?” The doppelganger witch played innocent.
“I just want you to take it slow.” Bonnie told her. “You just met the guy.”
“I’m sorry, weren’t you the one saying to go for it?” El questioned.
Bonnie cleared her throat. “Now I’m saying take it slow.”
“Well you don’t have to worry about that.” Care cutted in. “The Stelena ship has sunk.”
The Bennett witch stopped walking, surprised at the news. “I thought you guys liked each other.”
“We do, we did.” Elena corrected herself. “We aren't good for one another.”
Caroline then came in with the save. “He’s not very good in bed.”
“Caroline!”
“What?” The blonde gave her a look.
“You slept with him!” Bonnie yelled, before repeating the phrase quieter when she noticed the looks. “You slept with him?”
Elena gritted her teeth. “No I didn’t, Princess here just needs to get her head checked.”
“Princess?” Caroline whispered to herself.
Bonnie ignored Caroline. “Good. You’re single for the first time in your entire high school career. It’s the perfect time to play the field.”
“Because I’m so that girl.” She used old Elena’s line. “What aren't you saying Bonnie?”
Bonnie looked embarrassed. “It’s stupid.”
“Just spill it, Bonnie.” The human girl was tired of her friend beating around the bush.
After that comment, the dam broke. “I accidentally touched Stefan. And I got a really bad feeling.”
“I told you to talk to your Grams about that.” Elena sighed.
“And I told you I didn’t want to.” Bonnie countered. “She’s just gonna tell me I’m a witch again.”
“Witch?” Caroline played dumb since Bonnie never told her this. “Your Grams thinks you’re a witch?”
“You know what?” Bonnie changed the subject. “I’m just concerned. This is me expressing concern about my best friend’s new crush.”
“And I’m grateful.” Elena hiked her bag’s strap up. “But seeing as it’s not gonna happen, you don’t have to worry.”
Just then Stefan walked up to the three girls. “Good morning, El. Good morning Caroline, Bonnie.”
Seeing the look on El’s face, Caroline grabbed her hand. “Hey Stefan, bye Stefan. C’mon.” She began to drag Elena, when the vampire stopped them.
“Actually, I was hoping to talk with you.” Stefan looked at the witch with a pointed look.
Bonnie was about to speak up when she saw the look on Elena, but she beat her to it. “Sure, fine. We can talk.”
“El-” Caroline began, but stopped when El gave her a pointed look. The blonde huffed and turned to Stefan and muttered under her breath. “Don’t come crying to me when she gives you a super migraine.” She then grabbed Bonnie’s arm and walked away.
After seeing her friends leave, Elena spoke. “If this is about the other day-”
“It’s not.” Stefan told her. “I just came to ask for a second chance.”
Her head jerked back at the obscurity of that sentence. “Second chance? Stefan, I literally have your Ex’s face and I gave you a magical aneurysm last time we saw each other.”
Stefan rubbed the back of his neck. “I know that, but that doesn’t mean I stopped liking you or that you stopped liking me.” He gestured where her friends went. “I heard you talking about it.”
“I know you have vamp hearing, but that doesn’t give you a right to spy my conversations.” El pointed her finger at him.
“Even if you’re talking about me?” Stefan asked.
“About anything in general.” She told him. “My business is my business, okay? You don’t know me and I for sure don’t need your help.”
“I do know you El!” Stefan pleaded. “Please let me help you.”
“Just because you stalked me all summer doesn’t mean you know me!” Stefan’s eyes wided at that, confused on how she knew. El closed her eyes and sighed. “Look, maybe if I wasn’t a witch you could have helped me, but I’m powerful enough on my own. I’ll see you in class.” El walked into the school, leaving behind a heart broken vampire.

El was bored of Tanner’s annoying self-entitlement. So, she zoned out. Tapping her fingers on her desk while glancing wistfully out the window.
“Miss. Gilbert.” Tanner called on her, El ignored him. “Miss. Gilbert.” He said a little louder. Still seeing no response, he slammed his hand on the desk and startled the witch. “Elena, Pearl Harbor?”
Elena looked up and glared. “December, 1941.”
“What day?” Tanner asked with a smug smile.
Stefan, still trying to prove himself to her, spoke up. “The 7th.”
“Thank you, Miss. Gilbert.” The sarcasm was basically dripping out of his mouth.
Stefan shrugged. “Anytime.”
Tanner took this literally. “Very well. The fall of the Berlin wall.”
“1989. I'm good with dates, sir.” The vampire gave a small smile.
“Are you? How good? Keep it to the year. Civil Rights Act.” That’s when the great war between student and teacher commenced.
“1964.”
“John F. Kennedy assassination.”
“1963.”
“Martin Luther King.”
“'68.”
“Lincoln.”
“1865.”
“Roe vs. Wade.”
“1973.”
“Brown vs. Board.”
“1954.”
“The battle of Gettysburg.”
“1863.”
“Korean war.”
“1950 to 1953.”
Tanner laughed, thinking he finally caught him. “Ha! It ended in '52.”
“Uh, actually, sir, it was '53.” Stefan corrected him.
The teacher’s face turned bright like a tomato. “Look it up, somebody. Quickly!”
A student in the back pulled out his phone. “It was 19... 53.”
Elena just plopped her head on the desk, wishing that this day would go by faster.
