Tag Yourself I'm Anxious Momo
It wasn’t an unusual sight in 1-A’s dorms to see Mineta in various forms of distress. The understanding was only the one who put him there had the right to free him. Most of the time, it’d be one of the girls to do him in, but it was, overall, a classwide endeavour.
However, there was a notable exception.
Look, Kaminari understood that his friend could… take it too far on the rare occasion, but he wasn’t all that bad. I mean, Bakugou has insulted every single person in class, including Aizawa-sensei! Aoyama, Mina, and Hagakure gossip behind everyones’ backs, Momo could lay it on real thick how rich she is, and Iida actually snitched on them once. Like, detention and all! But despite all faults, they’re still friends. So yeah, Kaminari tried his best to be there for everybody, sue him.
Kaminari won’t lie though; Mineta being just as girl obsessed as him was perhaps the foundation of their entire friendship, but it was a solid foundation.
“Momo is the single prettiest girl in class! Did you miss the part where she has the biggest b-”
“Wait, wait. I know but hear me out,” Kaminari began, “Todoroki may not have the biggest pair, but you can’t come here and tell me she doesn’t have the prettiest face! Round cheeks, clear skin, nice eyes.” A dazed smile comes on his face by this point. “You just can’t compare them.”
Mineta, who was standing on his bed to show his friend photos of the two girls in question suddenly looked confused. “Todoroki? A pretty face?”
“Yeah, how can you not be in love? One grey eye, one blue. She just looks at me, and I can’t decide if I should feel safe and warm or start fighting for my life.”
“I don’t know, she’s got a nice body, but the scar kinda ruins her for me, you know?”
“Oh.” Kaminari sat back down at the desk, hands previously being waved around in the heat of the debate at his sides. He picked up his discarded pen and twirled it around his fingers. “We all have different tastes, I guess. Let’s just finish this page up, I still don’t understand how to graph equation thirteen.”
“No, wait! I’ll prove it!” Mineta collapses on the side of the bed, focused on his phone.
“Hey, it’s fine. Just agree to disagree, right?” Kaminari insists, hands still holding the pen up in surrender. He understood people have different ideas on who’s good looking. However, something about how Mineta said his opinion just didn’t sit right with him. “Come on, I wanna finish in time for movie night.”
“Just one… more… minute,” Mineta struggled to say, too absorbed in whatever he was doing. With an eerie smile, Mineta finally looked up with a, “Done! Check your phone, I sent it to you.”
Hesitation holds Kaminari back for a second, yet he complies anyway. Clicking on the text notification on the top of the screen, he sees a photo of Todoroki... without her scar. She was sitting in class, probably unaware that the camera pointed her way with Momo leaning over to whisper something in her ear. Underneath, Mineta wrote, ‘See! She’d be pretty without the scar. Next to Momo and with it she’s kinda ugly.’
“I found this photo editor a couple of weeks back, and it proves my point! Momo is definitely prettier.”
Leaning away from the other boy, Kaminari goes to delete the photo without a second thought. His eyes glance over the chat information by chance.
No, no, no. “Dude! You sent it to the entire class!”
Mineta let out a strangled sound while Kaminari went bolting out of the room; he definitely does not want to be in the same area as the boy right now. Even Aizawa-sensei is on that particular chat. Besides, he really needs to see if he can stop Todoroki from seeing the message. Stealing her phone for a second to save her the embarrassment really can’t be considered too immoral. Oh look at that, Ochako and Tsuyu are already making their way to Mineta’s dorm.
Anyways, Kaminari speeds his way towards Todoroki’s door and instead of slowing down, he throws it open with all his momentum. The banging of the door would probably give him a distraction when he tries to swipe her phone. That was his reasoning at least. Instead, all it managed to do was immediately pull Todoroki up from her desk, chair thrown back and stance ready for an attack.
“Oh, h-hi, Todoroki!” Kaminari stuttered with hands in his pockets and rocking on the soles of his feet. “Uh, those are some great reflexes, don’t think I’ve ever been that fast in my life.”
Thankfully for the awfully suspicious Kaminari, Todoroki lowered her fists when she saw who it was. “Hello, Kaminari. I can’t give you my work, Aizawa said anybody giving answers to you again will be expelled.”
“It’s fine! I actually had to, uh, ask you something,” Kaminari lied. Now if only he could think of a lie to get Todoroki to give him her phone. It was on the desk behind her so he couldn’t just try slipping it into his pocket as was his original plan. At least her phone is always on silent, small blessings.
“Yes?”
“Um… oh yeah! Can I have your phone for a second? I have this app you’re gonna love.” Though he asked for her phone, he jumped to pick it up before she could hand it to him. Best for her to not so much as see a notification if he wants to keep this secret.
“Is it really that important?”
“Trust me! You asked me to teach you pop culture and this game might be old school but we all st-”
Kaminari swiped the screen and saw that she already had the text page open. He let out a small shock before seeing it was just Momo, not the entire class. Now, he didn’t mean to pry into Todoroki’s life, he really didn’t, but his eyes just naturally read over the last message sent when trying to find the home button. ‘Can’t wait for our date!I’ll be at the hills at 6.’
“Is there something wrong?”
“... Dude, you and Momo! You’re dating?” Forgetting his earlier troubles, he went to stand next to his friend. Smiling wide, he left the phone back on the desk. “That’s awesome!”
She narrowed her eyes as her shoulders tensed. “Did you read my messages?”
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to. The text was just the first thing to show up, but it’s still so cool! You’re the first ones in the class to get together, I totally thought it would’ve been me.”
“Thank you, but Momo would like to keep it a secret for now. You will not talk to anybody about this.”
“Hey, of course, I’m not going to go around talking about it if you don’t want me to, I’m not that much of a jerk. Here, I’ll go right now and keep my lips sealed. Have fun getting ready for your date.”
Kaminari made his way out of the girl’s room with two thumbs up and back to his own. He really was happy for his friends and now that the idea’s in his head he does have to admit they’d work well together.
Now if only he didn’t feel like he was forgetting something.
A deep breath. The air is frigid today, and it stings the sinuses going in.
Hold.
A deep breath out, through the mouth this time. The air comes out warm.
Ochako practices this breathing exercise for three more minutes before bundling up her nerves. She tilts her head up towards the sky and continues the rhythm of in, hold, out. She imagines literally bundling her nerves together and sending them towards the low-hanging clouds, her fingers pressed together as she watches her anxious thoughts disappear towards the invisible sun.
In. Eyes closed, the wind hits her face with the first chill of the year. Hold. In this weather, sitting on a marble bench with a skirt wasn’t the wisest decision. Out.
She stands and walks to the dorms, hand on the metal door handle, condensation forming from the two seconds it takes to open. Somehow, the warmth welcoming her in helped more than all the time spent breathing.
Todoroki is with Tsuyu in the former’s room while the other sits on one of the mattresses they dragged in earlier in the day. Really, the odds. Usually on a girl’s night, Ochako would be the first one to show up in whose ever room they were all sleeping in. The first time she was counting on that rule to have a serious talk, someone managed to beat her. Though in fairness, it wasn’t every night where Ochako had to be dramatic in the perfect pre-storm weather for a solid ten minutes total. Ah, it’s alright, there’s no secrets between the girls. Mina made an entire list they all had to follow back three months ago, ‘no secrets’ being one of them.
“Ochako, your cheeks are redder than ever, kero. Come get a blanket.” Tsuyu went to hand Ochako the one she was previously wrapped in while Todoroki stood behind trying to hand over a cup of tea.
Oh goodness… this is why Ochako disagreed when anyone tried calling Todoroki an ‘ice queen.’ Last week, Momo greeted everyone with a cup of tea to warm them up, and Todoroki, as socially clueless as she is, is now trying to copy what she saw as acceptable behavior, albeit without the smile. She’s a sweetheart .
“Hey, it’s okay Tsu. I’m feeling fine. Actually, I wanted to say something to you, Todoroki, before everyone else arrived.”
Deku has soft cheeks. Ochako should know, she held them one day. It was a study session, and after yet another wrong answer, he sent himself slamming into the table. She picked his head back up. At the beginning of the year, he would’ve panicked out of his own room. Instead, he looked her in the eyes, let out a flicker of a smile, and wrapped his hands around her own. His hands were softer than hers though her fingers longer than his. Cheeks, hands, eyes. All soft under her gaze. Freckles were visible with how close they were. Brown, like the mochi in the store she planned to take the Dekusquad. Fading, though, as autumn blew its way to Japan.
Ochako committed herself to two plans in that tender moment: only Deku would be coming with her to the mochi store and she’d kiss those freckles goodbye before the sun stole them for the year. Ochako is a romantic. Ochako is not an idiot. When Todoroki let herself into the boy’s room right before the kiss, she’d seen how Deku jumped to greet her, remembered how he’d always spring to talk to her, follow her, how he marveled over her quirk. Not Ochako’s, Todoroki’s. He broke his arms, for goodness’s sake, just to see her fire. He was passionate during the sports festival, breaking his body in some argument nobody else could hear the specifics of. “Lover’s quarrel,” Mina whispered into her ear from the stands, jumping excitedly in her seat. His bones for Todoroki’s heart, it’s quite a morbid love story. And despite any feelings, what Ochako had to do was simple. Deku cared for Todoroki more than he cared for Ochako. Ochako cared more for Todoroki than she cared for Deku. If she had to see them hold hands and see Deku marvel over glittering ice, it would be fine. They’d both be happy.
“I think I know the perfect way for you to confess to Deku!” Somehow, the words came easier when Ochako thought of them happy.
“Ochako, what gave you the idea I lik-”
“No, no, but imagine! You both like strawberries, right? So, go down to the mochi place down the corner, it’s really cute I heard about it from someone in 1-B. Say something li-”
“Ochako,” Tsuyu interjected, hands held together and held tilted. Oh yeah, she managed to figure out Ochako’s crush. No matter, Tsuyu would keep quiet about the times she gushed about Deku if asked nicely. She’ll probably worry over her later, though, after Ochako cements her friendship with Todoroki.
“Please, let me finish. All you have to do is say you want to hang out with the Dekusquad, actually nevermind, I’ll say I want to hang out with the Dekusquad, and everyone will cancel at the last minute, leaving just you two! I can distract whatever teacher is watching over you, you slip away, and confess. Do it someplace special, it’d be so romantic. I mean, we could always try getting Deku to confess, but I feel like that’d take the next two years. I thought about this for a while, uh, to help you, of course.”
Todoroki was now standing beside Tsuyu, face impassive. “Are you done?”
“Oh, y-yeah. Do you not like it?” What could she have possibly done wrong? Pins pressed into her stomach, the bite from outside returning. Forced smile on, Ochako’s head went swimming in the stress.
“Ochako, I am gay.”
Oh.
Oh thank god. Bye bye, despair, Ochako has a chance to keep everything! Harmless crush, lifelong friend, peace between the girls. Adrenaline stopped pumping so abruptly she nearly hunched over to clutch her calming heart.
Wait, it’s not all about you.
“Aaa! I’m so happy you’d tell us, you trust us!” Ochako went hugging, face against Todoroki’s chest as she swayed side-to-side erratically. Relief had her grasping the taller girl with all the love and care and acceptance she could muster, Tsuyu helping crush her ribs from behind. Smiling hard, she released the red-cheek Todoroki only to move her hands to the girl’s shoulders, perfect leverage to jump up and down while meeting her on eye level.
“Of course I do.”
“Okay, you have no choice, you’re telling us who you’re crushing on. Is this why you never joined when all the girls talked about crushes? Do you like one of them?” Of course she wouldn’t talk about her crush if she was in the room with her. Maybe Mina? No, probably not. Could it be Tsuyu? Was she going to witness a confesion? That’d be the cutest thing! Though wouldn’t it make sense if it wa-
“Sorry I’m late,” said Momo, walking in with snacks in hand. “But I managed to get everything you asked for. Strawberry milk just for you, Todo.”
Momo went to hug Todoroki, and Todoroki hugged back. Ochako and Tsuyu looked wide eyed at each other as they came to the same realization.
When they came out to the class in their own time, Ochako and Tsuyu would never shut up about how cute they are.
Midoriya was riding high. Ochako confessed, kissed him, and proudly made her way across campus with him on her arm. He has a girlfriend. Beautiful, powerful girlfriend. Now if only he wasn’t so damn suspicious.
“When I said Kacchan and Todoroki would make good partners, I meant like with a hero agency.”
“Oh, uh, y-yeah, that’s what I thought you meant,” Ochako stuttered. Her eyes avoided his own.
“You jumped when I mentioned it.”
“I just don’t agree. Their personalities are so different.”
“Or,” Midoriya began, “You thought I was talking romantically.”
“No! Why would I think that?” Ochako calmed herself down. Much more earnest expression on.
“Well, I don’t think they would work out either. There is kinda a big reason they can’t be together.”
“Really?”
They leveled the same stare at each other. Not a single movement happened between the two of them. Both waited for the other to continue the conversation. Both were looking for a crack in the other’s facade to see what was hidden.
Jumping in the same moment, they smiled with one hand each in a victory fist and the other pointed at their partner.
“You know!” They shouted at the same time.
And again, they screeched together.
“Todoroki and Momo are dating!”
Midoriya has a girlfriend, and it seems they’re both smart enough to hide their friends’ secret from anyone but each other.
Iida, who was just walking in to remind them of curfew, would probably disagree.
The rest of 1-A learned after Hagakure walked in on the two flirting.
“Todoroki was all, ‘I’ll never hurt you,’ and Momo was blushing! Don’t worry, they didn’t see me. So, who wants to place the first bet on when they tell us?”
Todoroki looked at her phone. What password should she put in? Shouko? No, that would probably be a poor decision seeing as it was both her first and hero name. After today, both Kaminari and Kirishima managed to figure out her relationship just by swiping her phone open. Kirishima was helping her dye her hair, took her phone to set a timer, and got to see her girlfriend’s messages. He didn’t seem too surprised though.
His exact words were, “I don’t want to lie to you, it wouldn’t be manly. But we all kinda know. But we love you!”
She wanted to scream. All her girlfriend asked of her was to please, please give her time to come out. Her parents love her, they never let her forget it. Her biggest mistake was when she was a kid. She got curious, achingly curious, and decided to test the limits of Creation. She regained consciousness in a hospital, a metaphorical ache very much physical. Her parents cradled her between blankets of old perfume, cologne, and tears. Their first words for the whole five days she was under were ‘we love you.’ Is kissing Todoroki what it takes for them to regret wasting their breath?
Todoroki wouldn’t ask her again after that. She tried her best, yet everyone still saw through her. Years of secret keeping, of covering up for a man she hates, and the secret they figure out is the one she actually felt an obligation to keep.
She puts ‘Creati’ as her password and moves on.
Looking in the mirror, Todoroki appraised her new hair color, a single solid white. The idea came when Momo spent an entire night explaining the figurative language in their reading.
“Okay, so I know it seems odd, but there’s a reason the author goes on about the differences between the lovers. The author is following the logic that opposites attract, so every instance where two characters show opposing features is kind of like a hint to the reader that they’ll end up in love. It’s a mix of symbolism and foreshadowing.”
Despite all the books of chemistry and other sciences that line Momo’s bookshelves, Todoroki is well aware of the hidden stash of romance novels under her girlfriend’s bed. She holds a few strands between her fingers. Todoroki may not be the best at romantic gestures, but she does hope her girlfriend likes this one. Momo with black hair, Todoroki with white. That is how you show symbolism, right?
Momo looks at her girlfriend as she finishes explaining the reason for her aesthetic decision.
“I’m ready.”
