Chapter 1

“A vanilla latte and blueberry muffin right?” the barista asked as Camie walked up to the counter.

“Yes please,” she smiled slightly with a blush.

“Take a seat and I’ll bring it out to your table.”

Camie paid for her order and found that her usual seat was surprisingly available. She sat down and took out her school books. The sun shone through the window warming her up as she started on her homework. This is why she loved this cafe, not only was it close to Shiketsu campus but it also received optimal afternoon sun and served delicious muffins. The fact that she also may have developed a crush on the cute barista that made the most amazing drinks definitely did not have anything to do with the reason why she visited the cafe everyday.

“Here you go.” the barista startled Camie out of her thoughts as she set down the order, “Enjoy.”

“Thank you, you too,” she replied and immediately regretted it. As soon as the barista had walked off however Camie buried her face into her hands in embarrassment.

You too? Great now that I’ve completely made a fool of myself...

A giggle interrupted her train of thoughts, looking up Camie found a blonde girl in an unfamiliar uniform standing at the edge of the little two person table.

“Sorry,” the girl spoke up, “but may I sit here? Everywhere else is full and I didn’t realise that it would be so busy.” Camie nodded her response and watched as the smiling girl sat across from her. “Is it always this busy?” the girl asked.

Camie nodded again before scolding herself mentally.

Get a grip Cam, you have to say something.

“Ah yes, it is. It normally only lasts for an hour though, a lot of kids from my school gather here on their way home that’s why. Also they have good food and the barista is very talented at latte art so their drinks are pretty... and I’m rambling, I’ll just shut up now.”

The girl giggled again as Camie’s face heated up, “Don’t worry about it, it’s kinda cute how excited you’re getting about this place. It’s my first time here so it’s nice to hear that you regard it so highly. I’m Toga by the way and you are?”

“Camie.”

“What school do you go to Camie?” Toga asked as the barista placed a black coffee and a cream puff in front of her rather abruptly. Toga gave the barista a toothy grin as she walked off.

“Shiketsu,” Camie answered before instinctively scolding herself again.

Enough with the one word answers! She’s going to think you’re antisocial. But I’m not, I’m just embarrassed...but why?

“Woah!” Toga’s eyes sparkled with joy as she looked at Camie, “That means you’re a hero! That’s so cool; I’ve always wanted to meet one personally. Ever since I was little I thought that I could try to be one but then when I was seven they told me that I couldn’t be one cause I didn’t have a quirk but that’s okay cause I’ve found something else I want to do.”

Camie blushed at the idea of Toga assuming she was a hero. “Actually I’m not a hero yet, I still need to take my hero license exam.”

Toga frowned and tilted her head as she scooped some cream out the puff and dumped it in her coffee giving it a stir. Camie watched as she then licked off the spoon and proceeded to take a sip of the now creamy coffee. Noticing her gaze Toga put the cup down and looked away bashfully, “Oh I’m sorry, that must have looked a little weird. I always do this, the cream sweetens the coffee and I save a tiny bit of money this way. Toga demonstrated how tiny the bit of money was by holding her finger and thumb slightly apart in front of her.

“It’s not weird,” Camie assured her quickly not wanting to admit that she was looking at Toga with interest instead of judgement. She glanced towards the barista and then at Toga trying to decipher if a changed had occurred within the past few minutes.

Maybe not.

“When did you say the hero exam was again?” Toga asked suddenly all hints of shyness gone.

“Hmm? Oh next week Saturday,” Camie said. “The school is travelling to the venue and we are going to spend the night before in a hotel.”

She smiled at Toga as she said that, her excitement overpowering her own shyness around the blonde bunned beauty. Toga listened to Camie as she spoke of all her worries about the upcoming exam and what she had come up with to try and get through the stages of the exam using her quirk.

“Do you know what you’ll be doing?” she asked after a while.

Camie shook her head as she stuck the last bit of blueberry muffin in her mouth. “We only find out all the details on the day once we are there.”

“What happens if you fail?” Toga asked fearfully, “Do you have to give up being a hero?”

Camie smiled and shook her head vigorously, “No not at all, that just means I’ll have to try again but I will try my best to ensure I don’t fail.”

“I’m sure you’ll do great!” Toga exclaimed joyfully before looking outside, “I should get going, it’s getting late.”

Toga stood up quickly and started to walk off; Camie looked down slightly disappointed at how abruptly the blonde haired beauty had departed. She started to pack her untouched homework back into her bag and prepared to leave before she noticed a presence standing in front of the table. She looked up and saw that Toga had returned and was looking at her expectantly. “D...did you forget something?” Camie asked startled.

Toga nodded and glanced around, her eyes roaming everywhere before settling back on Camie. A pink tinge tinted her cheeks as she spoke up, “Will you be here again tomorrow?”

Camie felt the blush work its way up from her neck onto her cheeks and her throat closed up as she panicked. Unable to say anything she just nodded.

Toga smiled brightly, “I’ll see you tomorrow then,” she waved and skipped out the store passing the disgruntled barista on her way.
