Chapter 3

With all my being, I know that this Student Council meeting is going to be dull. They always are there’s no surprises. No fun. Just endlessly boring discussions; I do not care about the temperature of my aquarium all I care about is what the fish inside do. All I want is to push the fish to see what will happen. Sayaka would call it foolish not to my face of course, she is far to polite for that, but she would think it. Truly her level of responsibility fascinates. How can someone live like that, simply ignoring their desires? Honestly without Sayaka here to scold me, I could just leave, and go gamble. It would be easy, but yet here I sit in my chair waiting for the rest of members to come. How strange.

“Huh?” Midari questions as she slams open the door, “Did you send Sayaka on some kind of quest. Why wouldn’t you send me, so I could get out of this damn meeting?” She kicks the table. What a beastly girl she is.

“She is unable to attend this meeting,” I respond. Behind me there is a high pitched laugh. I continue to stare at Midari refusing to give Runa any ounce of satisfaction.

“I just saw Sayaka leaving with someone. Has she perhaps grown uninterested in you?” Runa laughs again. “Poor President all alone now.” It starts spreading now. The tension. Besides me Ririka tenses, Midari’s jaw drops and her eyes widen, and Yumemite and Nishinotouin both look sick. Perhaps my earlier instincts were wrong and this meeting won’t be so dull. Runa is truly a interesting girl to be so bold in front of me. Is it related to her obsession with absolute neutrality? A sort of twisted logic in which if you harass one you must harass all. Does she simply want chaos or is their deeper reason? I can never quite get a read on her. Truly an interesting girl; though, not nearly as interesting as Sayaka. Runa is like cockroach, one simply cannot help but be fascinated by their ability to survive and sneak around beneath everyone’s feet, but that fascination will pass once one realizes they are just a bother. However, Sayaka is like a tiger; strong, beautiful, infallible; I can barely look away when she is near.

Once, I told Ririka that Sayaka reminded me of tiger; she seemed confused by comparison. She told me that Sayaka is a dull girl. How foolish of my sister to not see how wonderful Sayaka is. Does her mask blind her from seeing Sayaka for what she truly is? How could anyone not be intrigued by the all logical being that is Sayaka? Though now is not the time to question the sanity of all those who question Sayaka note with all these eyes on me. I must not allow myself to be distracted.

“She had business to attend, and will likely be back tomorrow, but you’re concern is quite nice. It amuses me,” I chuckle out. Runa just laughs again and takes a bite of her lollipop; it crunches in her mouth

“Oh well that’s good,” She slips away from the window back to her chair, “Or maybe not when Sayaka is not around I can play my games without a lecture.”

I feel my eyes darken for a moment and my smile tightens, “No. No that simply wouldn’t do. She’s too useful.” Ririka scoffs under her breathe. Why I couldn’t say; my connection with her is slipping and now some of her actions are becoming a mystery to me.

“Useful, huh?” Runa lets out her biggest laugh yet, and this time I’m not sure why.

————————

In the car, my sister’s and Runa’s loud laugh fill my head. I am missing something, and it appears to something quite obvious. How long have I been missing something? How long has Ririka known more than me? One month? Four months? One year? Two years? I must know.

“Oh, Ririka that scoff you made was quite amusing. Very out of character though...may I ask what the reason was for it.” A direct approach could work.

“I just remembered something.” She is lying. Ririka never lies. Perhaps this might be more of a problem than I previously thought. Has she decided to betray me? Unlikely, but not impossible. What a day it has been? My early instincts were indeed wrong that meeting was not dull, but it was not fun either. What a contradictory! I have much to think about.
