Three suns align in blinding, terrible light, and the chamber of the Crystal freezes. Jen freezes too, hands shaking with grief- does it even matter if he succeeds if she’s gone- when the song of Thra crescendos and a gelfling sits atop the crystal with him. ...No, not a living gelfling, a shade- ethereal, wavering- one who looks like….
...Like him.
“I tried,” its voice echoes in Jen’s mind, warm and sad. “I failed, and we lost so much.” Their eyes meet, and he understands. “But you’re going to do it.”
Jen nods to his father, and fulfils his destiny.
