The jewel
It was a Friday evening luz walking home after school.
Just as she had been hoping for—eda’s big surprise, her adopted dad was standing in the driveway hugging eda and amity standing looking confused.
He was still dressed in his bounty hunters' clothes so he must've just got back. "Daddy!" Luz screamed as went running up to greet him.
He turned around and gave them both a big goofy grin as he held his arms, waiting for the hug.
"Hey luz " he called out happily. "How’s my favorite kid doing?"
"I’m your only adopted daughter remember!? " Luz yelled as and ran into her father's waiting embrace.
both apart to get a better look at each other. "Why’ luz ," he said grinning like a manic, "You look more beautiful every time I see you. I'm sure that you're a real heart-breaker at school.
I swear that the last time I saw you 5 years ago, you were a foot shorter. God, you kids grow up so fast theses days. Pretty soon, I'll be threatening the poor boy that you bring home luz.”
_________
"Dad! you know I’m bisexual! Luz said turning slightly red.
"How was your hunting trip dad?" she asked, trying to change the subject.
He clapped his hands together and said happily. "Oh, it went real well. Still haven't caught the big prize yet… but there's always next time."
At that moment, Luz noticed that there was something in the red pick-up truck that her dad drives. She looked over his shoulder to see that there was a large black tarp covering up something. Eda’s dad was too busy bombarding Oswald with a million questions to notice what luz was looking at.
"Hey dad! Did you catch something?" She asked excited.
"Well," Oswald said happily. "I've had worse days. But not many. At least I managed to bring something back with me to prove that it wasn't a complete waste of time."
Luz and amity looked over the edge of the car to get a better look at what was in the back… and just sticking out from under the cover was a dead reindeer with several bite marks on it.
Hot damn! Eda exclaimed. now I’m won’t have to go grocery shopping and get into a argument with the check out person.

“…so he’s your adopted dad?” Amity whispers to luz.
“Yeah he’s been in my life for 10 years and I’m very happy when he comes home because he brings small gifts.” Luz exclaimed.
Oswald reached into his pocket for something before saying, "Sorry. I it took so long, to give you this but I do consider this a right of passage.
He then pulled out what he was looking for… it was a necklace. It was a golden chain with a key with a large orange jewel that looked like a eye ball. It sparkled every time it moved and the more that you looked at it, the more that it seemed to feel as if it swirling around with some strange magic.
"For me?" Luz said stunned as she took it. She rolled the crystal in her hand for a moment before holding it back up to the light to see the glow shining through. "It's beautiful."
"Yeah, I picked it up from my native tribe," Oswald explained holding up his own on his neck.
_______
"Thank you. But I don't understand. Why are you giving this to me?"
Oswald pointed at it and said, "like I said it’s a right of passage but Look closely."
Confused, She looked back at the gem, until—There, inside the very center of the jewel was the form of a—"It's a wolf," Luz gasps out.
"Yeah," Oswald answered smiling. "My people gave it to me believe that lupus wolves have ancient mystical powers unlike any other creature. Cool huh?"
Luz looked at him with raised eyebrows and asked, "Do you believe that?"
Oswald shrugged, "Well I believe in a lot of things. Especially when it’s magic involved.
thanks this is really nice of you."
Luz then looked back the jewel, undid the clasp and put it around her neck. "I'll never take it off," she said.
