“What are you playing as?” Reani asked softly as she settled in her chair. It squeaked in her microphone.
“The detective,” Fjord replied.
“Nancy Wheeler,” Darrow declared.
“Feng,” Caleb replied next.
“I’m not telling you who I’m picking,” Beau laughed. “That makes playing the killer way harder.”
“Fine,” Reani sighed with a smile in her voice.
They picked their perks and flashlights. They were sent to the cornfield to Beau’s delight. The survivors started to run around muttering to themselves. Beau waited for a moment and got comfortable in her seat. After a moment, she decided to start following the smallest survivor she knew was Caleb. She saw another person scurry by the side of her screen toward a generator. Caleb had started one before Beau finally swiped at him to injure him. Caleb swore as she struck, and Beau laughed.
“That was an intimidating battle cry,” Beau laughed. “Better start wriggling crack hands.”
“Beau, why did you go for me first?”
“I like picking on children.” Beau snorted as Reani laughed. “Oh, here’s a hook. Let me just… you stay here now.”
Beau put Caleb on the hook and drew a triangle on the ground.
“Caleb, you good,” Darrow asked.
“Yeah, she just put a trap down by my hook.”
“She playing the witch?”
“Mhm.”
“I see you, Reani.”
“No, you don’t!” Reani shrieked and laughed as she ran from the generator she was working on.
“Come back, little girl. I just want to play.”
“Run, my sweet princess,” Darrow called. “Run to safety… Oh shit!”
One of the false witches sprang from the trap as Darrow crossed the marking to free Caleb from the hook. Both started to run away from the hook and toward the series of free-standing walls and lockers. They paused and Darrow started to heal him. They both started to creep toward the cornfield when Fjord shrieked in their ears. He had triggered one of the traps, but Beau used that one to teleport that time. Reani got one of the generators up and running.
“At least someone if productive,” Fjord sighed.
“I saved my fiancé’s life.”
“There are days I’d swear you three were the polycule and not the actual one,” Reani laughed.
“It feels like it,” Fjord hissed out as the constant clacking from his microphone said he was wiggling. “Yes!”
“Fucking crack hands,” Beau groaned. “Hey, get back here. I need you for decoration.”
“No thanks. It throws off the Feng Shui of the whole set up.” A moment later his character cried out in pain.
“Stay there and I’ll be back for you. Just…” Beau drew a few triangles around him. “Don’t touch those.”
“Imma touch em all.”
Beau headed toward the flash of light that showed where Darrow and Reani failed their skill checks. She knocked down both and brought Darrow to a hook when she suddenly was teleported back to the patch of grass where Fjord had been and jumped out of her seat. Caleb and Fjord were running away. She went for Caleb first, who had been on a hook already and drew more traps on the ground.
“Reani, if you could stop fixing generators that would be great,” Beau griped as she broke another one.
“Hard pass,” Reani replied as the screen flashed from another failed skill check.
Beau headed ion that direction but found Fjord lurking in a corner and struck him down instead. This time, he was too close to a hook to escape. He failed the escape attempt and immediately had to start struggling. She headed for Reani again when a trap by Caleb went off and she was able to swipe at Darrow once again and put Caleb back on the hook for his third and final time. She picked up Darrow and headed to another hook that was far away, expecting him to get off at least once, but it seemed he had forgotten to struggle for a bit.
“Reani?”
“Mhm.”
“Did you break my hook.”
“Yeah, sorry about that.” The smirk in Reani’s voice was clear.
“I hate you.”
Darrow escaped again, but Beau was finally able to knock Reani down in another patch of grass before hunting down Darrow. The other man was about to get Fjord off the hook when she downed him and hung him up.
“Reani,” Darrow asked.
“Yeah, not really in a place to get you off right now.”
“Should I just let go and hope you get the hatch?”
“Up to you, big boy. I’m good.” She paused as Fjord’s character lost the struggle and his hook lit up red. “I’m slightly less good.”
“Where the fuck did you go,” Beau asked. “Did you slug away.”
“You know me,” Reani replied, though through slightly clenched teeth with concentration. “Just slugging away.”
“Seriously where the fuck are you?”
Caleb went to spectator mode and was able to see from Reani’s perspective. He snorted immediately and inelegantly when he realized that the hag was on top of Reani’s prone body. Beau ran over her a few times while Fjord and Caleb laughed into their hands and Reani had her tongue clenched between her front teeth.
“Reani.”
“Yeah.”
“Where the fuck are you?”
“Just hanging out. Laying around if you will.”
“Did you get away.”
“Nope, I see you.”
“Where?”
“In the map.”
“Reani.”
Fjord and Caleb finally started laughing in full as Beau struck by Reani’s head then ran off to go look at something. Reani shook in her seat with her own silent laughter. A moment later, Darrow screamed out and she knew it was time to start looking for the hatch. She had made it from one patch of grass to another and froze as she saw Beau and stopped moving. Darrow joined in on the cackling as Beau once again ran over Reani’s character.
“Seriously?” Beau snapped. “Where the fuck are you? You can’t be here still.”
“Yeah, new perk. I actually got wings. And flew away.”
“Fuck you.”
“Been there, done that,” Reani replied brightly. “Oh, leaving me again? See you soon.”
The guys roared with laughter before finally muting themselves in the Discord channel.
“Why are you… there you are!”
“You were doing laps on her dying body,” Fjord cackled as he unmuted himself.
“Fucking Christ I could not find her.”
“We noticed,” Darrow laughed. Reani, you won that round.”

Fjord <3 [3:28am]: But after my injury and a lot of other things, I realized I was not able to stay in and I had to take a new path in life. And it sucked to suddenly have to figure out all of my changes in life, but that happens. I didn’t fail because my original goal waws unachievable.
Fjord <3 [3:31am]: there was just…. Something else in the cards or whatever. And if that’s the case for you then I know you will succeed in that direction too. But I know that’s not the case. You’re too brilliant to fail

Fjord looked up as his phone rang. It was the house phone rather than one of the cellphones, which made his chest clench with concern. The only time the house phone rang was when it was about Abuela. Molly looked over at him from his spot on the floor. His roommate had taken to laying on the ground with his arms outstretched to hold up the book like a child. He claimed it was so he could move around a lot and be comfortable, but not enough to sleep. It was fair as Molly tended to procrastinate the more stressed he got, but Fjord also figured the man refused to use chairs and sofas like normal people whenever possible.
“Hello,” he answered. There was a pause before his Tio replied in Spanish, switching the whole conversation over.
“Your aunt told me you are bringing guests to help move,” his uncle stated. He sounded tired.
“Yes, we are staying at a hotel, though. I promise we’ll be over for dinners though.”
“And church?”
“We’re leaving on Saturday, so we won’t be there for church.” There was a long pause. “I’ll go with Abuela on Thursday to a prayer.” He quickly amended.
“You said you are bringing your” the pause was almost painful. “Boyfriend is that correct?”
“Yes, I want him to meet the family.” Fjord sucked in a slow breath and felt the cushion beside him depress as Molly joined him. “I’ve met his parents and it’s only fair.”
“I see.”
“I don’t know when I’ll be home next is all. And…”
“I have not told your Uncle Rico that you’re on your way home.” There was another long pause. “Will you not be home for Christmas again?”
“I… will try. I know Abuela misses me.” His uncle hummed. “I’ll see what I can do.”
“If this… Caden.”
“Caleb,” Fjord corrected slowly.
“Caleb is still around then, maybe bring him by.” Fjord was silent long enough that his uncle repeated the question.
“Yeah, yeah, I will. I’ll see you in a few weeks.”
There was never a goodbye in the conversation and rarely a word of affection between them. His aunt and grandmother were far more likely to be the ones to remind him of their love. But Tio Ven spoke his care in other ways. Fjord stared at his phone in shock long enough that Molly started to feel concerned. The larger man felt his head turned to face his friend.
“He said Caleb could come for Christmas if we’re still together.”
“Well,” Molly replied with his eyes glowing. “You have a few months to figure out how to tell your family he’s Jewish.”
