Chapter six
While Checker and Show Pony had different mail routes, they often went together. The trips got very long and tedious, so it was nice to have someone to talk to. Checker genuinely thought of Pony as her best friend, she thought she could talk to them about anything.
The pair were on their way home from their last route. They had to spread them out so they weren’t outside during the hottest parts of the day.
Pony had found a lizard, Checker put it in her breast pocket for safe keeping. It’s little head was peaking out of the top.
“My sister was scared of lizards,” Checker starts. “I would always try to bring them home, it was kinda funny how she wouldn’t go near them.” She smiles.
“What a rebel,” Pony laughs. “Newsie’s the same way.”
A dustcloud rises in the distance.
“Get your gun out,” Pony instructs. It could be nothing, but it’s good to be prepared for if it’s something.
It turned out to be something. Two BLI vans stop in front of them. A squad of dracs and two Crows get out. It generally seemed like an easy fight. The two have gotten into plenty of claps together, but this was Checker’s first time with Crows. She felt it would be alright, though. How different could it be?
The finished off the dracs easily, but as the numbers got smaller, the crows started closing in. Show pony had just gotten one when the other grabbed them from behind. Pony cried out and struggled against the Crow.
Checker realized what was going on and rose her gun to shoot the Crow. She gets it, but grazes Pony in the process. They hissed in pain as the Crow fell to the ground.
“Shit!” Checker hurries over and kneels beside them. “Oh my god, a-are you okay?!”
Pony winces, “Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” They say quickly, “I have a first aid kit in my bag.” Checker nods quickly and looks for the kit.
She digs around for disinfectant, “I don’t know how to do this-“ Pony cuts her off
“That’s okay, just put a bandage on it, we’ll clean it when we get to the station.” She quickly does as she’s told and helps Pony up.
“I’m so sorry, I-I really didn’t mean to.” Her eyes get misty
“You’re fine, you did exactly what you’re supposed to do. This isn’t the first time and definitely not the last.” They start to chuckle a bit, but it soon changes to a wince when they put their bag on.
Checker made sure to ask D about first aid after Pony got taken care of
