A great weight had been lifted from Galinda's shoulders when she learned that Elphaba never really loathed her; on the contrary, she seemed to enjoy the kind of treatment they both had. That generated in the blonde that her feelings became stronger.
Miss Elphaba. If only you knew how I see you right now. She thought as they were in History class.
Both of them were far away. While Elphaba was almost at the front of the class, Galinda was almost at the back. Even from her position, she could contemplate the emerald witch: from the way she plays with her braids, she could see when she is concentrating or not, or when there was something she could not understand as how she tilted her head.
Galinda felt greedy. Hardly had Elphaba shown her the slightest feeling of sympathy, and she already longed to have more.
I've been bewitched, and I wouldn't want to get out of that state. She thought as she let out a faint sigh.
Galinda needed a plan, something to get Elphaba to stop seeing her as a rival and start noticing her with different eyes. She needed and longed for the witch's eyes to only notice her.
She fantasized about being able to gaze upon her roommate's face better, about being able to caress her face as she lost herself in those greenish eyes. She could see herself slowly bringing her face closer to Elphaba's, so close that she would-
Dr. Dillamond's voice brought her back to reality. She had missed much of the class just daydreaming about her future wife (she doesn't know it yet.) That opened up a unique and unmissable opportunity for her.
Smiling playfully, she got up from her seat and went straight to talk to Elphaba.
“Miss Elphaba.”
“Oh, hello Elphaba. What a coincidence.”
As if it was Lurnine's bad joke, just as Galinda had spoken to Elphaba, Fiyero appeared outside the classroom.
“Fiyero. Miss Galinda.” She addressed the two of them then asked, “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“Yes.” They both said in unison, generating the two of them to look at each other defiantly.
“You first, my dear.” Encouraged the prince.
“Since you insist.” She added and looks at Elphaba sweetly. “Miss Elphaba, I wanted to know if you could help me study.” After that, Galinda bats her eyelashes.
“Wait. Are you serious?” Without letting Galinda answer her, she grimaces in mock surprise "I must be dreaming. Galinda Uppland asked me to help her study! Then what?" Looking towards Fiyero, she added ”You're going to invite me to the Ozdust Ballroom instead of Galinda? If so, this is definitely a nightmare.”
Fiyero froze for a few moments, then smiled mischievously.
“You must be a fortune teller, for that was what I wished to do.” After that, he winked at her.
That fact made Galinda's world stop - Fiyero Tigelaar inviting her right under her nose?! Unforgivable. Completely and utterly unforgivable.
“You've got to be kidding me.” Elphaba commented uncertainly as she slowly walked away from the duo.
“I'm dead serious.” Declared the prince and approaches the witch “Elphaba Thropp. Would you like to go with me to the Ozdust Ballroom?”
Galinda felt short of breath and her chest ached.
“No, no. She can't” On an impulse, she grabbed Elphaba's arm and pulled her closer to her as she murdered Fiyero with her eyes. “She promised to study with me at the book place.”
“I-”
“Come on, Elphie!”
Without waiting for any response from the witch or the prince, Galinda dragged her away towards the library.
She didn't notice it at the time, but if she had paid more attention to Elphaba, she might have noticed a slight blush on her cheeks and, above all, that she at no time put up any resistance.
The two women were immersed among the books in the library. Galinda was trying to compose herself, not only from the attack of jealousy she had, but also that now she had Elphaba in front of her, explaining some concepts she did not understand. Her voice was mesmerizing, her steady but warm gaze made Galinda smile, and the afternoon light made her greenish skin glow in a magical halo.
“Are you paying attention?” The emerald witch asked as she arched her eyebrow at the blonde.
“What, yes, yes, I'm paying attention to you.” Galinda assured as she bats her eyelashes.
“Well what was the last thing I said?” That question made Galinda swallow dryly. “I'll take that as a no.” Hardening her gaze, she added “There's something that has you worried. Does it have to do with Fiyero?”
She tensed in place and began to smile out of politeness.
“Why do you think-?”
“Galinda.” Elphaba warned. “I know when you're about to lie. We talked about it.”
Feeling trapped, the blonde let out a slight sigh and just nodded. At that, Elphaba remained deep in thought, as if debating something. Her lips pursed at times, and after seconds that seemed like forever, Elphaba spoke.
“Fiyero is a good man if you get to know him. He seems shallow and carefree, but he's much more than that.”
What?
“What?” Galinda asked without understanding the point or what her roommate was trying to say.
Elphaba arched an eyebrow and continued speaking.
“Didn't it bother you that Fiyero didn't invite you, and that's why you pulled me away from him?”
At that precise moment Galinda wanted to hit and kiss the emerald witch.
You are dense, Elphaba Thropp. And so I love you. She laughed barely and looked with some adoration at her roommate.
“Not really.” Galinda admitted then leaned back in her chair. “I did feel a little annoyed.”
“Why?” the green witch asked.
When Galinda saw her eyes, she didn't notice any trace of malice; the opposite, what she could see in her eyes was curiosity.
“Because he beat me to it.” She blurted out before she could stop herself.
“What?” she asked incredulously.
It's now or never.
“You see. The Ozdust Ballroom is a scandalacious place. And I don't think it's the best place for you to go alone with a prince. From what I was thinking...” A playful smile came to Galinda's lips, and there she fell silent.
Noticing the signal her roommate was giving her, Elphaba raised one of her eyebrows.
“What are you up to, Uppland?”
“Why don't we, aside from devoting ourselves to studying, go out for a while just the two of us?”
Galinda had to negotiate with Elphaba. After discussing some important things, they decided to meet to study at least twice during the week, and on weekends they would go out to study at a place of Galinda's choice.
The blonde now saw herself in the mirror again. She was wearing a yellow dress with delicate embroidery. It was tailored, so it accentuated her figure even more. Her hair was pulled back in a high ponytail, and her curls were more accentuated than ever. And her matching shoes made her look more glamorous and, why not say it, attractive.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could notice how the woman of her dreams stopped in her tracks. Looking at her sideways, she made a superhuman effort not to embrace her and fill her with kisses.
Elphaba was dressed in a beautiful black dress, and brought with her the hat that Galinda had given her moments before.
The two stood in silence, admiring each other's beauty. Feeling like she was going to melt at any moment, Galinda held out her hand and smiled.
“Let's go, Elphaba Thropp, to the Ozdust Ballroom.”
