Chapter 1

It was the second semester of Enid’s third year at Nevermore when the problem arose. Between early setting suns and high silver moons, she lost track of time. Ever since her transformation a year ago, she truly connected with her werewolf form; not without the help of a certain Addams, though.

Nevermore was not a cruel institution by any means, especially since Principal Weems oversaw any decisions made by or about the students. This applied to werewolves during full moons as well. Principal Weems kindly invited Enid to her office two days after her first transformation, both of them haunted by the bloody night’s events.

Weems didn’t hold back, directly asking Enid if she felt alright. Enid replied with a slight shake of her head, not powerful enough to answer courageously.

“Would you feel safer if you were taken to the cages during the next full moon?”

“Yeah, I… Yes.”

Weems nodded slightly, pursing her lips sympathetically as an excuse for a comforting smile. “You don’t have to make a finite decision now, but I’d like you to talk about it during therapy. I only have your best interest at heart, Enid.”

“I know, Principal Weems. I’m just…”

“You don’t have to explain, darling.”

And now, one year later, Enid raced through the dark forest freely, Wednesday and Thing cruising along behind her. It was one of the best feelings she had ever felt.

Every morning after a full moon continued to be a migraine-inducing ordeal; her roommate consistently became softer, getting her coffee and insisting upon hydration.

“Enid, you must drink this glass of water. I do not care if you are undressed, I will turn around.”

“Wednesday, are you going soft on me right now? The breakfast was really good! You didn’t have to get water, though!”

“Stop your chattering and drink the water.” And then Wednesday turned around, and Enid drank the water.

It was cute, really, the way her and Wednesday’s friendship was everything Wednesday considered unbecoming when she first met Enid. Now, she even wore the snoods Enid made for her. Character improvement, truly. Enid’s vampire friend thought so as well.

“Willa, you’ve got to wear your snood. Yesterday’s full moon run was kind of cold, and that’s coming from me. You must have been freezing, Thing refused to even step out.”
“Enid, I assure you, my ears are in pristine condition,” Wednesday said, lips pursing ever so slightly more than usual. Enid knew it was her way of hissing while talking.

“Weds, come on,” Enid pouted, and Wednesday blinked once before reaching for the snood laying on her bed.

Yoko grimaced, standing at the room's door. “You’re both down so bad, it’s painful to watch.”

Fortnights passed, Enid reaching for Wednesday amidst nightmares and Wednesday pulling her close after having phantom pains of her own. Though not perfect, their relationship worked. And with the comfort of a stable life, Enid forgot about a certain anomaly she came across during her last summer at home.

Nine months later, the anomaly manifested itself in the form of a swaddled newborn child tucked within a basket, soundly sleeping to the sound of nothing.

What an anomaly, truly.
