Luz Noceda and Amity Blight had been best friends since freshman year of high school. But when Luz went off to college in New York and Amity left for Massachusetts, they separated. I mean, it was only for a little while. Frankly they never knew when they’d see each other in person again since their holiday breaks didn’t align together.
Bestfriends was an understatement. They did date for a couple months before they went off to college. But as Amity was packing up and Luz was helping, they decided it would be better for them to break it off. Just until they graduate, then everything will be fine.
Amity left for college in mid August, they said their goodbyes as she headed off. Then three weeks later, Luz was off to New York. The first few months they called all the time, but as the work got more stressful, they distanced.
They started talking again when Amity was off for holiday, Luz got off a week after hers started. She told her about her roommates and guys that kept asking for her number.
That made Luz nervous, she didn’t know why.
She paced around her shared dorm room after hanging up the call. Her roommate— Willow, who was laying on her bed, looked up from her book with a raised eyebrow.
“What’s wrong with you?” Willow looked Luz up and down before she stopped in her tracks.
“One of my.. friends from Connecticut was telling me about all the guys trying to get with her. And I…” She trailed off.
“You like her?” Willow smirked.
“Of course I do!” Luz walked a little closer to Willow. “I broke it off with her in August because I was scared we wouldn’t be able to go long distance.”
“Well,” The black haired girl pushed her golden glasses up. “I think breaking it off because of the long distance was a foolish move. It could have worked, but if you weren’t–”
“OKAY! Okay, I get it." She cut her off. "I made a stupid mistake and now I'm scared I can’t get her back because all these guys are hitting on her and I'm almost 200 miles away from her with no way to help.” Luz raised her voice a little.
“When are you leaving for holiday?”
“Wednesday.” The brown haired girl flopped onto her bed and groaned, rubbing her eyes. “What if she doesn’t even wanna see me…”
“You won't know until you try….” Willow dragged. “Go get her back before someone else does!”
Luz gathered her courage and a few days later, made her way down to her hometown. Amity knew she was coming, she just didn’t know what day.
As she entered the city, the dark rain clouds started covering the skies. She watched the droplets fall off the windshield of her car before parking a block or two away from Amity’s house.
“You better be home, Amity.” She grumbled under her breath, getting out of her car and walking through the cold rain.
It was cold. She crossed her arms and let her platform boots splash, angrily walking to Amity's; she knew she had to calm down before meeting up with her.
She walked up her porch, looking back at the rain before knocking on the door. Hoping it was her who would answer and not anyone else’s.
“Got it!” A muffled voice called from inside.
The door clicked a few times, and when it opened it revealed a very put together, dry, Amity.
Very opposite from Luz. She shuddered in the cold, watching the drops of water fall from her hair.
Stand there like a ghost, shaking from the rain.
“Luz?” Amity exclaimed. “Are you insane?” She laughed.
She’ll open up the door, and say ‘are you insane?’
“Yes,” her voice cracked. Amity pulled the girl inside.
She offered her a blanket and some new clothes. After Luz dried off in the bathroom, she came back out to the family room where Amity was waiting.
Her hair was still soaking, she took out the hood of the sweater Amity gave her and put it up, sitting next to the girl. Amity took the blanket and draped it around her shoulders, gently rubbing the girl's arm in the process.
“Do you want tea, or something?” Luz shook her head.
“I'm okay,” She smiled.
Amity compromised and leaned back onto a pillow. “It’s been a long 6 months, why’d you walk in the rain here in the rain?”
Say it's been a long 6 months.
Luz hesitated for a second, too scared to say anything in fear it may come out as a squeak. She looked into her eyes.
And you were too afraid to tell her what you want.
“I just started my holiday. I wanted to surprise you.” She let out a lazy smile.
And tilted her head knowingly, “Luz, I’ve known you long enough to know that isn’t the real reason you’re here.”
“I.. missed you?” She shrugged, even questioning herself. “I’ve just been thinking about how it used to be.”
Remind her of how it used to be.
“Like before college?” The other girl scooted closer.
“Before college, Like when we’d hang out at that park everyday after school and take photos.”
“Oh yeah! Where we had our first kiss!” Amity smiled.
With pictures in frames, and kisses on cheeks.
Luz nodded. “And earlier when I didn’t talk to you for a month.” She looked in the opposite direction, embarrassed.
When you left her all alone,
“You know, You never told me why.” The pale girl said in an enthusiastic tone.
And never told her why.
“It’s because.. I had a crush on you.” Luz shyly admitted. “And I lost you for a while.”
Amity looked away for a moment, pursing her lips. Thinking before saying anything aloud.
And that’s how it works, that’s how you lost the girl.
Luz gathered her confidence and faced the girl, taking her slim hands into her own. “But, That’s why I’m here now!” She took a breath when Amity made eye contact with her.
And then you say…
“I want to be with you. For worse or for better.” She said proudly.
I want you for worse or for better.
“I know things are stressful with school and stuff, but I’ll wait forever for you to be ready.”
I would wait forever and ever.
Amity sighed and smiled at the girl softly. “If I’m being honest, I was kind of heart broken when we first broke up.”
Broke your heart, I’ll put it back together.
“I’m ready, whenever you’re ready.” Luz held her hands a little tighter.
“So, what do you say?” Luz smirked.
“I..” She pondered. “Would love to be with you again.” She flashed a smile. “I only want you.”
I want you forever and ever.
Luz grazed her hands against Amity knuckles and smiled, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
“Really? That’s all?” She deadpanned shortly before putting a soft hand on each one of Luzs cheeks, pulling her in for a gentle kiss.
And that’s how it works.
They pulled away, giggling. Luz moved closer and touched their foreheads together ever so slightly before kissing in between the girl’s nose.
That’s how you get the girl.
