Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
The clock on the wall of the weathervane served as a constant reminder that Ajax was late to their date. So late in fact, that the people around her had begun to stare in pity as she sat there mindlessly staring out the window.
Her stomach rumbled, yet the girl didn’t move from her seat to order food. He’ll be here. Her coffee had gone cold but she didn’t want to spend any more money incase the gorgon forgot his wallet again. He’ll be here. The sunlight had begun disappearing from the sky but she knew, he’ll be here.
Enid Sinclair had been waiting for her boyfriend to arrive for their date since noon. A glance at the clock on the wall showed that it was already 5 o’ clock. She sighed, before looking around at the diner. The barista behind the counter had been staring at her in pity for hours, sometimes walking over and asking if she’d like something to eat. She’d say no even as her stomach loudly rumbled in response. A few people had stopped by and asked if she was okay, but she was able to dissuade them with a simple “I’m fine.”
So she sat, even as the clock on the wall read 6, and then 7. She knew there was only a few hours left until the weathervane closed all together, but still, she knew. He’ll be here.
So she waited, occasionally pulling out her phone and scrolling mindlessly through whatever new posts had appeared before slipping her phone back into her pocket.
They had been planning this date for over a week. Had he stoned himself again? She knew it was a distinct possibility, but if he had then he would’ve been free by now. Maybe he didn’t think to check up with her? The thought made her heart ache.
She thought back to earlier, when Wednesday had invited her out to go hunting for a new mystery. While tempted to spend the day with her roommate, even if they definitely would’ve been doing something illegal, she turned her down to go on this stupid date instead. No, he’ll be here.
Enid sighed, slamming her head onto the table in front of her. She heard a few gasps echo out from the people sitting around her but found she didn’t care. Slowly, she lifted her head up and looked back out towards the street.
What would the two of them have gotten up to today, had they gone mystery hunting? What secrets would they have uncovered? Enid never used to care about any of that, was scared of it even, but found that she’d slowly become more eager to run into danger if it meant being with her macabre roommate. The thrill that appeared on her face when she found a clue or the satisfaction when she solved part of the puzzle. Enid found herself longing to see those emotions yet again. And if it meant sprinting into potential death to do so, she’d do it without hesitation.
The ticking of that damned clock slowly pulled her out of her daydream. As she looked over, she saw that another half an hour had nearly passed. He’ll be here.
So she took out her phone yet again, mindlessly scrolling through fanarts on Tumblr and dumb drama on Twitter before opening Instagram. She felt her heart break as she stared down at the picture in front of her. The first post on her feed was one Ajax Petropolus, posting pictures of himself and a few other stoners playing a video game. She shut the phone off and let it fall on the table as tears began to form in her eyes yet again.
God she was so stupid. Why would he remember this time? It’s not like he remembered last time. It’s not like she was important enough to be worthy of being remembered. Maybe his friends or that game were just more interesting than her, it would make sense. Her head fell to the table as she let it out. She had believed in him, thought the best of him. God she was an idiot.
“I owe you an apology for my tardiness,” a voice she’d recognize anywhere seemingly announced to the restaurant from the seat across from her, “I got caught up in an emergency and was without my phone.”
She looked up to find her roommate, her best friend, her absolute favourite person sitting across from her with a worried look on her face. She felt her heart swell at the sight. Quickly, she sat up and wiped the tears off of her face, “It’s okay, are you hungry?”
Wednesday nodded before getting back up out of her seat. Then she did something completely unexpected, she reached her hand out to the werewolf. Slowly, she extended her hand and met Wednesday’s, who immediately pulled her up out of her seat and walked her over to the counter. As Wednesday talked to the barista, she couldn’t take her eyes off of their still interlocked fingers. She could feel the blush that was overtaking her face.
After a few moments to get over her shock, she looked up to see Wednesday handing the man behind the counter some cash and grabbing two bags. She let the goth lead her through the diner and outside into the cold night.
“Wait Wednesday, I didn’t order anything.”
“I got your regular,” she responded without a beat.
The blush on her cheeks intensified, “Well, uh, where are we going then?”
“On a date.”
She froze, her hands falling out of Wednesday’s grasp and to her side, “I can’t do that.”
“Why not?” the goth asked, meeting Enid’s gaze with a questioning one of her own.
“Well, I’m dating Ajax,” she stuttered out, “and well, it would be like cheating on him, wouldn’t it?”
“That insipid little fool stood you up,” Wednesday grabbed her hand yet again, before meeting her eyes, “So I plan on making up for it. I will take you on a date far better than any one he ever could. Unless of course, you do not wish for me to do so.”
Enid didn’t know what she wanted. On one hand, she was dating Ajax. Going on a date with one person while dating another was wrong and she knew that. But on the other hand, this wouldn’t have happened if Ajax had just shown up to their date in the first place. And this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened either. The stoner was incredibly prone to forgetting about their plans. But still, it wasn’t right. Even if she wanted to go on a date with someone else, she should break up with him first.
She looked up towards Wednesday in order to tell her that and found she couldn’t. The goth girl’s eyes were full of passion and anger, and Enid found she didn’t want to look away from them. She found she wanted to say yes more than anything in the world. So she did.
“Good, I had hoped you would say that.”
“Well, that still doesn’t explain where we’re going.”
Wednesday didn’t respond as she began pulling the girl forwards yet again. She could feel excitement filling her until she noticed the goth moving towards the woods surrounding Jericho.
“Uh, as much as I enjoy mystery hunting with you Wednesday, it isn’t a great date.”
“We aren’t mystery hunting,” Enid swore she could hear a smirk in Wednesday’s response.
And so they walked through the woods, Enid only getting more and more excited as they passed beautiful plants and heard the sounds of nature in the background. Finally, they reached a clearing and the goth girl stopped.
The clearing was beautiful. Trees and flowers surrounded them, but not a single one of them blocked out the cloudless night sky above them. She could hear the faint sound of insects and animals in the background. But what was in the middle of the clearing really made her hurt soar. Dead center of the clearing sat a blanket, one half of it black and one half pink, only visible by the candle’s that were currently lit beside it.
“How,” Enid muttered, taking in the scene before her, “Why did you have this set up?”
“The blanket was going to be saved for a gift, but when I learned Ajax had stood you up I decided that this was a better use for it.”
“You set all of this up as soon as you learned Ajax stood me up?” Enid could feel the blush once again taking over her face, “How did you even manage to set it all up?”
“I didn’t. Thing, Bianca, and Yoko did while I went and gathered you.”
She felt tears springing to her eyes again as she jumped into her roommate, embracing her, “Thank you.” She was about to pull back when she felt the goth girl return the hug, albeit awkwardly. It only made her cry tears of joy harder.
After multiple minutes of hugging, Enid finally pulled back. She swore she saw a smile gracing Wednesday’s lips when she looked up, but it was gone as soon as it had appeared. Her roommate led her over to the blanket.
As soon as she sat down, she heard a grunt of frustration from above her. She looked up to see Wednesday holding a… phone?
“What the fuck Willa,” she stood up, “When did you get a phone.”
“I didn’t,” she responded, “and don’t call me Willa.”
“Then wha-” Enid started, before getting interrupted by a robotic voice, ‘Bluetooth device connected.’
She looked up to see frustration clouding Wednesday’s eyes.
“Do you need some help?”
“No,” she responded, “I just want to know what blue-toothed device has attached itself to Bianca’s phone.”
Enid couldn’t help herself as she laughed, clutching her stomach and collapsing onto the blanket beneath them. She couldn’t get the annoyed look that had covered Wednesday’s face out of her memory as she let bellowing laughs out into the forest. It took almost 5 minutes and multiple attempts to bring her laughter to a halt.
“Are you done?” Wednesday asked.
“Yeah, yeah, I am,” she began, pushing herself back up off the ground, “Now wha-”
She was interrupted as Taylor Swift began to play from a speaker behind them. Her eyes went wide as she met Wednesday’s eyes, before a smile covered her face.
“Oh my god Willa you’re the best,” she cheered, grabbing both of her hands, “Come on, dance with me!”
“Don’t call me Willa,” She responded, but allowed herself to be dragged into a dance regardless.
Enid belched out the lyrics to the songs that played as she pulled Wednesday into dance after dance. Her joyous laughter could be heard echoing throughout the forest. When Enid met Wednesday’s eyes this time, the girl didn’t try to hide the small smile that graced her face, nor the intense adoration that was in her eyes.
Enid blushed as the music raged on around them, “Willa?”
Wednesday nodded at her to continue, “Can I kiss you?”
There was no response as Wednesday’s lips met her own. She melted into the kiss, pulling the goth girl closer. After nowhere near long enough, Enid pulled back, “Our food is probably cold by now.”
“I’ll get you more,” Wednesday responded. Enid could see the slightly disheveled bangs on her face and her slightly bruised lips. All she wanted to do was descend on them again, “What about Ajax?”
She didn’t need to think as she answered, “I’ll break up with him tomorrow.” Wednesday nodded, before dragging her down to the blanket on the ground. She wrapped her arms around the werewolf before pulling the girl closer. As Enid snuggled into her side, she looked up at the stars with a smile on her face. As she looked back down to ask Wednesday a question about the constellations, she came quite literally face to face with the girl, her eyes full of nothing short of love. Enid found she couldn’t quite remember what her question was as Wednesday pulled her in for another kiss.
