It had just turned midnight on the 14th of January, it was Kate Stewart's birthday and she was, as usual after a long day saving the earth, fighting with the coffee machine. Petronella Osgood arrived at the office door with a bag of presents that she'd been hiding in the lab all day and when Kate saw her she immediately felt relaxed "what's all this?" she had forgotten it was her own birthday "these are for you ma'am", "for me? why?", "are you telling me you've forgotten your own birthday?" she chuckled "it's been a long few weeks Os, what with the surprise slitheen attack followed by my father dying in my arms" she went serious and almost broke down when mentioning her late father but managed to keep it together, just about. "Maybe I've planned today so we can relax and just be together" Kate looked at her "I can't have a day off Osgood, U.N.I.T. needs me here, it's the only thing I have keeping me sane" she punched her hand against the coffee machine and Osgood pulled her into a hug, Kate accepted it, she wasn't really a hugger and only let into them if she really felt safe with someone "it's ok I've organised backup from Geneva to take over for the day and they're sending Colonel Shindi" with the reassurance Kate relaxed and took her coffee. They both sat on the sofa in Kate's office "do you want to open these now or at home?", "now, you know I've not been home since dad's funeral..." she froze and Osgood placed a comforting hand on her knee and took a puff of her inhaler before handing her the first present from the bag.
After Kate had opened all of the presents she turned to Osgood and gave her a deep kiss "thank you for these Os" she smiled "are you ready to go home now?" Os asked her but Kate tensed up which gave her a clear answer "you've got to go back sooner or later Kate" she looked into her deep brown tired eyes trying to convince her "fine but only because it's you" she resisted knowing the brunette was right and because she was too tired to argue so gathered her things together and the pair left together.
As she turned the key in the lock, she paused momentarily and took a deep breath before opening the door and walking in "well done I know how hard this is for you" Osgood took her hand "lets get you up to bed", "fine" she didn't want too but knew she needed the rest after the many sleepless nights and she knew Os wouldn't let her go any longer without sleep. When they got into the bedroom they both got changed into their matching dinosaur pyjamas and got into bed, snuggling until they fell asleep in each others arms.
Kate was woken by the sound's of clattering around coming from downstairs, she looked next to her and found her girlfriend missing so went downstairs and found her in the kitchen "what are you doing Os?" she looked around the mess that was all over her kitchen and the brunette "I was trying to make you a cake and it went horribly wrong" she chuckled at how sweet she was being "for someone with your level of intelligence I'm surprised you can make such a mess", "for a scientist I'm a terrible baker" she cleaned herself up with a stray tea towel "we should get some breakfast, I'll sort something out, you go and get a shower and clean yourself up" she gave her a kiss "but the mess" she wanted to clean it up "leave the mess Osgood, please", "alright, I'll be 15 minutes or so" she went upstairs to shower.
By the time Osgood had come down Kate had cleaned up the entire kitchen and was sat at the breakfast bar eating some toast and drinking a coffee from her new coffee machine, Osgood got herself a bowl of fruit loops and a glass of orange juice and sat next to Kate. "So what have you planned for today?" Kate asked curiously "a trip to the natural history museum followed by a surprise" Os told her and that got Kate intrigued "a surprise?", "yes now go and get dressed before we become too late to get in" Kate went to get ready and came down 10 minutes later and they both left for the museum.
When they got into the museum they went straight to the dinosaur section as it was Kate's favourite, when they'd finished wandering the museum they went into the gift shop and Os said she'd buy anything Kate wanted "this please Os" she was holding a dinosaur colouring book with matching pens "really? ok" she payed for it and took Kate to the restaurant they had their first date for lunch. After they left the restaurant Os took Kate back home and told her to stay in the kitchen whilst she set up the sitting room "close your eyes and follow me" Osgood told the blonde who followed her into the room "open" she did and could see Osgood had decorated it into a mini home cinema with Jurassic Parc on the dvd player "oh Os this is amazing" she gave her a kiss and took a seat on the sofa, Osgood went to get popcorn and champagne and sat next to Kate, pulling a blanket over them and played the film. When it had finished Osgood turned to Kate and pulled out a small box from her pocket "I have one last present for you Kate" she looked into her eyes and opened the box "Kate Lethbridge Stewart..." she took a puff of her inhaler "will you marry me?" Kate looked down and saw her father's old ring and burst out crying "yes Os I will" she slipped the ring on, it was a little loose but that didn't matter and she kissed her "Happy Birthday ma'am".
