Angus and the case of the realigned chess board
Angus Mcdonald was intelligent beyond his years. He was probably smarter than most adults, though there were a few notable exceptions that he had jotted down.
(1) The birds:
(2) John
Angus checked the list once, then twice, then erased it and used the paper to transcribe a Taako recipe for later, because he didn't need a list for two things. Angus looked at the paper again and licked his lips when he remembered the soup. It was delicious.
Anyways, even with Angus's intelligence, nothing could have prepared him for this. His mentor sat across from him at a small table in the B.O.B's cafeteria, he had slid a paper over to Angus for him to read and kept talking even as Angus read it.
It was a house plan, the house seemed to be for dozens of people, a true mansion. There were small markings over many rooms that described them for the reader, one read: 'Kitchen I', but there were also 'Kitchen II', and 'Kitchen III', along with 'Dining Room'. Angus looked over the paper and saw that each of the Birds -and John- had picked a room. Taako passed him a pencil and Angus looked at it with confusion.
"Sir?" He asked, picking up the pencil, "What's this?"
Taako pointed at the paper, "After the finale battle, Luce was going through records and found out-" Angus looked down, "-that your 'grandpa' didn't exist at all. You've, up until now, been living with the police and helping them solve crimes, but now," He pointed at the sheet, "you stay with us." Angus startled and almost fell off his chair, at which Taako laughed.
"What?"
"You heard what I said."
"Okay sir." Angus pushed back the paper without marking anything, quickly placing the pencil on it. Taako was obviously joking.
Taako looked down before looking back up and pushing it back towards Angus. "If you don't pick a room I'll give you the one next to Merle's."
"Haha sir, now take it back before I actually mark a room." He pushed the paper back towards Taako, "You made the joke already sir, we can move on."
Taako looked at him with the same eyes he always did, but this time with a hint of sadness, "Angus. I'm not kidding. Pick a room."
Angus looked at the paper and then looked back up at Taako, who nodded. A grin overtook his face as he picked up the pencil again before reaching the tip towards the paper. With one last glance back up at Taako, who smiled, he put the pencil to the paper and-
It took two months, but when the entirety of Faerun on their sides, a house, even one as big as this, was finished quickly. The birds landed the Starblaster in a nearby field and unloaded, and soon enough-
Angus sat on his bed. His bed. His bed. His bed. It never felt quite right when he said it. He still had no idea why Taako would even think to invite him to stay with the birds, and he had even less of an idea why any of the birds agreed, but they seemed to like Angus, so Angus didn't say anything. There was this. . . persistent feeling of happiness, it was like Angus always felt the need to laugh and smile.
But instead of leaving his room to hang out with the tres horny bois or Madame Director, or even Davenport, he stood up and walked to the center of his room and looked around. To his left was the door, to the right was his bed. Behind him, there was an entire wall of bookshelves that were empty, some had a few potted plants that he knew Merle would take care of. In front of him were two dressers, one had a lamp on top. In between the dressers was a window that let natural light into the room, bathing it in a warm glow.
Angus walked backwards first and ran his hand along the shelf. He turned to his bed, which held his suitcase, and walked towards it. He opened the suit case and then opened the bag of minor holding that was inside (the deals warlock had given him a, frankly incredible, discount on it as 'a birthday present', even when his birthday was over two months before), he unloaded a stack of books and began to put them on the shelf.
Almost too soon, the bag was empty, and the shelf not even half full. He then loaded the dresser with his clothes, placed any odd knick-knacks he had on the dresser, and put the suitcases into his closet. And then-
It was home. Lup knew that the moment it had been put into construction, that feeling was only enhanced by the location, and then when the crew expressed their own feelings of home, and then again when Barry put in an extra room while saying; "Just in case." And then yet again when Magnus and Julia carved the furniture, again with Merle planting the garden and loading every room he could with potted plants, and then with Lucretia setting her books down on the shelves, and then when Taako said; "Can I expand my room a bit?" And invited Kravitz into the discussion. Again with Davenport, who set his captains jacket down and put on a Hawaiian shirt instead, and finally when John, recently revived by 'Jeffandrew', walked into the conversation on accident, then was quickly swept up by Merle.
The basement was, personally, her favorite. It was a massive cylinder held up by magic that took her, Taako, Barry, and even Lucretia an entire week to make. The walls were covered in arcane planters which held the hundreds of seeds that they had collected over their journey, the floor was a massive testing / research / general hang out area. She and Barry had spent days just hanging out there, completing odd ends of old hypothesis's and generally feeling each other up as much as possible, though she left that out when Taako asked what they were doing.
Then there were all the kitchens, three to be exact, each was connected with a sustained 'dimension door', and each held ingredients of all shapes and sizes, and each was perfect.
With all the moving around she had been doing, it had taken her a full week to even notice that there was a small child staying with them.
Honest to god, she had thought that Magnus and Julia had adopted a child and then told everyone to keep it on the down-low, but she had missed the memo. She never questioned the boy, who stared at her with enough wonder in his eyes that he challenged even Barry, who, while having noticed the child, hasn't talked to him at all.
Finally, Lup got bored of trying to figure it out with no clues and went to Taako, who looked around for someone, and finding none, smiled and said;
"He's my magic boy." Then Taako wacked himself with a wooden spoon and said, "Sorry, that came out wrong, what I meant to say was: He's my apprentice, and I like him very much, so he's going to be staying with us from now on!" Which was about as close in Taako-talk you could get to: 'This boy is one of my favorite people and he has lost his place of residence so I've taken him in.'
And Lup respected that! She just wished that she had more knowledge. After getting the boys name, Angus, she started keeping a little notebook. As a scientist, it was her job to observe, note, test, hypothesize, and know more about (probably not in that order, but close enough) anything that crossed her path. She kept one on each of her family members and their close friends, she had an extensive one on John. Maybe it was creepy, but she never put anything other than data in them (except Barry's after the conservatory, where she just began to draw hearts and make notes about how cute he was).
Anyways, she began to take notes on odd behavior. Barry noticed her search, smiled at her and immediately joined in helping her through gathering knowledge from their family, who gladly gave it up.
Angus Mcdonald (12, no birth date known)
- Hung out with Magnus back on the moon base, he was a seeker. Magnus says that he's as intelligent as him, which, objectively, is not as intelligent as me or Barry, but is still way smarter than the average person. Magnus says that Angus has, quote, "Proficiency in all Wisdom and Intelligence checks and scores, a plus four otherwise, and some kick-ass wizard powers thanks to Taako's lessons." (note the Taako's lessons, ask him about them). Julia has nothing to say other than: "he's a good kid."
- Merle has nothing to say other than; "He's smart."
- Davenport recalled multiple occurrences of him and Angus playing board games with Lucretia back when he still didn't have his memories. He says that Angus; "Stumped me." Which is insane considering the fact that Davenport has a century of experience and an IQ of almost seventy percent more than an average humanoid.
- Lucretia stated that Angus had begun to try and learn to use his right hand to write as well as his left, but quickly 'figured it out' and started writing in perfect common with both hands.
- Taako is an outlier, but his statement should still be taken. He says: "Angus is one of the smartest wizards of this world in, oh, about six hundred years. He reached level four in record time through pure determination and knowledge of arcane science. I once showed him the cantrip prestidigitation and, I shit you not, he used it to learn fireball, disguise self, and a multitude of other spells by manipulating the spell in just the right way. I swear to god, he's going to create an entire new school of magic!"
Past is unknown, presently living in the birdhouse (copyrighted by Taaco inc.) with the rest of us. Further research pending.
It. . . wasn't a lot. Lup looked over it again and again and again, but none of the family had anything more to say. Lup sighed and set the journal down in her room before leaning into Barry's side and going to sleep.
Angus walked out of his room and into the hallway, he wandered into one of the many living rooms to find John, Merle, and Davenport playing a board game. He moved closer to find that it was some kind of unknown card game with cards ranging from Uno to tarot cards. John caught his eye, smiled, and waved him over. Angus stepped around the couch and sat on an empty seat. He was quickly dealt in, and after a few minutes figured out the gist of the game.
Eventually, Barry and Lup walked into the room and set up a game of chess, Angus kept half an eye on their game, but was too focused on cheating Davenport out of all his earthly (and some spiritual) possessions.
After a little bit, Lup appeared to have won, and Barry smiled and congratulated her, kissed her on the cheek, and then walked out of the room in search of snacks. Angus finished up his game and said a small farewell before walking over to the elven woman, sitting across from her and motioning to the board. "Do you want to play?"
Lup laughed, "Sure, little man! Let's do this, just don't cry when I inevitably beat you." She snapped her fingers and the board snapped to starting positions, Angus blinked and then smiled.
"I should be the one saying that to you, Miss Lup! Also, what spell was that?" He made his first move.
"Just a little something me and Barry crafted when we were bored of moving all the pieces back. We call it 'Realign the Board', mostly because we don't have a better name for it yet. Also, don't call me 'Miss', makes me feel old." She made her move, and Angus carefully countered her, thinking all his moves through.
"How long ago did you make it, Madame Lup?" He asked, watching her carefully, an analysist gaining information. Lup watched him with the same eye.
"Better. About sixty years." Angus chuckled as Lup countered his counter, then moved a pawn forwards.
"Do you think you could teach it to me, Madame?" Lup tilted her head before chuckling.
"If you beat me, I'll teach you." She looked to find Davenport and Merle watching the match with interest. John had left the room and was off somewhere doing something else.
"Well, get ready to correct a lot of bad hand movements. Check." Angus moved a piece forwards.
Lup cursed under her breath and blocked, losing her queen.
"Check."
Another piece.
"Check."
"You're really doing well, too bad this won't last long." Lup moved another piece forward to block Angus and then-
"Checkmate."
Lup stared at the board, searching for a way out of the checkmate. There was a rook to her left, a queen up front, two bishops and- Lup nodded, "Damn little man, you know how to play chess! I guess I gotta teach you that spell now."
Angus nodded before he picked up his king, offering it to Lup, "Do you want to play again?"
After that day, Lup's journal gained two more pages on just how good Angus was at board games, at detecting thoughts, and even at telling half-truths. Barry came in later and they played a board game that she couldn't remember, Angus beat them both by a lot. He made a similar bet to Barry, but this one was for teaching him a spell that was called 'Ray of Sickness' or whatever, Angus said it was for some pranks.
But eventually, the day came for their scheduled magic lessons, and Lup arrived to find a room full with people, laughing and eating and generally having a good time. Angus smiled at her apologetically and motioned for her to sit across from him on the floor, where he set up a small coffee table with a game of chess.
She tilted her head at Taako, who had brought in four bowls of popcorn, balancing two on either hand. Taako just smiled and motioned for her to sit with Angus, which she shrugged at and did so without any further questioning.
Angus tapped the table a few times, and the room quickly silenced itself. Taako stood up and cupped his hands on either side of his mouth, "Here ye, here ye! It has come to our attention that recently, our reigning champion, Lup, has been defeated by the child, Agnes!" Angus didn't even try to correct him, just nodded along. "This match went unseen, so today we're holding a public battle between the brilliant, amazing, wonderful," Lup smiled, she knew her name was coming first, "Agnes, and Lup, I guess."
She didn't even blink, just turned towards Angus, who gave her another apologetic smile before offering her a king in either hand, a white king and a black king, she took the black king and Angus nodded. He leaned in and whispered, "Sorry, I kind of reverse-engineered the spell you were supposed to teach me and showed Taako, who set this whole thing up."
She waved her hand, "No problem little man, I do have to say that whatever beginners' luck you had the other day is gone, so get ready to lose." She put on a mask over her shock at his 'reverse-engineering' of spells. That shit was high-level arcane theory. "Make your move."
After a few minutes, there were a decent number of pieces taken from either side, but Angus was definitely in the lead. Barry had been cheering for her until he saw how well Angus was doing, at which point he apologized and then picked himself up off the couch and sat behind Angus, where he shouted that 'Lup's terrible reign has gone on long enough, long live the king!'
"Check." Lup countered.
"Check." Shit.
"Check." She made a calculated decision, if she could just get Angus to make one move, she would regain the upper hand-
"Checkmate."
The room erupted into cheers, and Lup bowed her head in defeat, at which Angus pat her on the shoulder before he was swept up by Magnus, who tossed Angus onto his shoulders and paraded him around, showing him off to all of the people who had been half-watching the match.
Barry pat her on the shoulder, at which she fell back onto him, "Babe, I can't believe I was bested by a child!"
"I'm twelve!" Came from over the group of people.
"A child!" Lup smiled, and she heard Taako laughing. Angus pushed his way through the crowd and sat down next to Lup and Barry, the crowd dispersed and began to talk in their own, Lup listened for a moment before feeling a tap on her shoulder.
Angus looked up at her, "Madame Lup, does this mean you have to teach me a different spell because I already figured out 'Realign the Board'?"
Lup tilted her head, "Depends on what you had in mind. My arsenal of spells cover basically all evocation, transmutation, divination, and even a little bit of abjuration. Anything else is covered by my husband over here." She motioned to Barry, who nodded.
Angus nodded, "I was actually hoping you could help me craft my own spell."
Barry perked up, "I'll help you! It's always nice to have something in my repertoire. What was your idea?" Angus pulled out a small notebook and passed it to Barry, who looked over his notes. Lup peeked over his shoulder and nodded, "This seems simple enough!"
Angus shook his head and flipped the page, revealing a block of text. "Any of these are good."
Barry flipped the next page and found another spell, then he flipped the next. He flipped through the whole book and found about a hundred spells that hadn't been invented yet, some of them mundane, some of them genius. "I-"
Lup cut him off, "Taako, Lucy! Come take a look at this!" The two excused themselves from their conversations politely and made their way to Lup, next to which sat a very embarrassed Angus. "Do you see this?" She took the book from Barry and passed it to Taako, who flipped through it, then passed it to Lucretia. The two seemed at a loss for words, and Lup turned back to Angus. "Kid, I knew you were smart, but this is ridiculous. Next you're going to tell me you're creating a new class of magic entirely!"
Angus looked off to the side before procuring another journal.
Eventually, the trio of chess-players made their way into the basement, where they began to create a spell called 'All-seeing eye', something that Angus was especially excited about. It was basically a super-charged Identify spell that made you attuned to your surroundings, allowing you a state of semi-omniscience for a very brief period of time. It was a decently high level, but Angus surprised them again by being able to cast spells that were out of range for even the more advanced scholars of wizardry.
Within the day Taako, Lucretia, and even Magnus joined them in helping out with creation. The first two so they could put their name on it and have it in their arsenal respectively, and the latter because magic was fucking rad.
It took them a week before the spell was fully ready for field testing, and by then Lup's journal grew by several pages.
Angus Mcdonald:
Likes:
-herbal tea (made by Merle, Lucretia, Davenport, Taako, or John, as they 'give him the good stuff'. If by good stuff, he means two spoonfuls of sugar, then yes, they do)
-black coffee(?) (he stated that he drank a lot of coffee back during his 'detective days'. see page 12 for more.)
-magic
-being treated like an adult
-chess / board games in general
-The birds, including me and Barry, apparently.
Dislikes:
-when people put things on high shelves.
-unsolved mysteries.
-learning about the stolen century
-talking about his family.
Detective days:
-Angus seemed to have started as a detective at a very young age, six or seven, to be exact. He quickly proved himself more intelligent than most adults when he 'solved the case of the cold-blooded cutter'.
-He was then paid by the case throughout his childhood to take on detective cases by the police department, and became a city-wide phenomenon.
-No mention of home life.
