"I've been meaning to ask you something..."
Sasha choked on those words, embarrassed by letting her guard down.
"What's up Sash?" Marcy obliviously remarked, finally pulling her face away from her Nintendo switch.
"Can I crash at your place?" Silence passed. "Tonight?"
"Of course silly! You don't need to ask, you're always welcome to my place!" Marcy beamed. Oh that smile. It could cut through steel. But it didn't hurt Sasha in the slightest. Her stomach filled with butterflies at the thought of spending more time with Marcy.
"Okay then." She said quietly, still a little stunned at how quick it was for Marcy to agree. She noticed Marcy quickly closing her locker and stumbling to class. That girl was charming. Even with her clumsiness and lack of grace.
The evening was rapidly approaching. What would Sasha say? How could she ease into something so terrifying? Should she just knock? Sasha hadn't seen her since they were kids. Or had she? She couldn't remember. There were too many times when she couldn't remember if they'd spoken or not. Was there some sort of deep seeded hatred between them or was Sasha never paying attention? Whatever it was she couldn't possibly make up for it now. But she loved that girl, the way she chirps when she speaks about her interests, or maybe the way the rays hit her deep brown eyes underneath the sunlight. Why did she feel so stupid?
As Sasha made her way to Marcy's house, she began to think about all the times they'd hung out in the park surrounding her. The time where Marcy ran her bike into a tree and Sasha immediately hopped off her wheels to help, or when Sasha bumped into Marcy on her skates earning a crash between the two in the middle of the rink.
Finally she'd reached the front porch of where Marcy stayed. Sasha knocked before letting herself in and made her way upstairs. As Sasha entered the room her heart leapt and she fidgeted nervously. She pulled her backpack off of her shoulder, slid off her shoes, then removed her jean jacket. Sasha then leaned against the door frame awkwardly.
"Hey Mar-mar..." Sasha swallowed her pride. Why was this so weird now? Haven't they always been best friends?
Marcy looked up from the screen, playing a first person shooter to pass the time. "Why are you acting like a stranger? Get in here girl!" She greeted. Her voice bright and cheerful, putting her back behind her paper even further.
Sasha was starting to panic slightly. She sat down in front of the other girl, their legs pressed close together. And it seemed as though Marcy was only doing so because she couldn't see any other option. Sasha hoped it wasn't out of pity.
"So...you remember we used to play Mario Kart at our neighbors pool?"
"Mhm-hmm..." Marcy hummed without looking up.
"And we were running around one night..."
Marcy suddenly turned her head to look at Sasha, who continued, desperate to get this over with.
"...and I slipped and went underwater, right? Well I pretended to be drowned so I could cheat at the final lap! We won't do that again will we?" She snickered, retrieving her confidence for no more than 5 seconds.
Marcy cocked an eyebrow at Sasha, still staring at her. "You can cheat as much as you want...I've been waiting to beat you since I saved you that day."
"Well you were just so good at Mario Kart and I knew I couldn't beat you." Sasha began, "but I also might've did it because I wanted you to save me."
Marcy audibly gulped, her eyes sparkling with... confusion? Interest? Sasha always knew when Marcy was super into something, but couldn't figure it out now.
"Marcy..." Sasha began to break into a nervous wreck.
"Yeah?"
"Uh...there is something that has been on my mind lately."
Sasha leaned forward slightly.
"What is it?" Marcy asked, trying to be patient. Sasha paused for a moment.
"Can you save me from what I'm about to do?"
Marcy parted her lips to speak but was met by Sasha's lips as they both closed their eyes and leaned into the kiss.
Sasha then broke the distance between them "I love you Marcy."
When Marcy finally spoke, her voice was barely audible and full of wonderment. "Me too Sasha." This time Marcy stealing another kiss.
"We should probably stop before someone sees us!" Sasha gasped after separating themselves. "You're are such a freakin' cool person. Not everyone is lucky enough to have someone like you."
"Oh Sashy..." Marcy smiled brightly, her cheeks burning red. The most beautiful shade of scarlet Sasha had ever seen. "Thank you!" She smiled again.
"You really are perfect Marbles." With that Sasha started crying and Marcy sighed heavily, slipping her switch under her pillow and holding onto her blankets tightly. They laid there for a while, silently hugging each other.
The morning sunlight basked through the window pane and caressed the both of them, illuminating their faces and making it seem like they belonged together. Marcy reached up to wipe the dried tears away.. She hugged tighter, never wanting to let go or move on from this moment. Eventually they pulled apart, lying quietly in bed.
"Hey Sash." Marcy yawned, stretching her arms like a cat.
"Marce?" Sasha confusingly replied before regaining full consciousness.
As Marcy lowered her arms she peered into Sasha's eyes. "Yeah?"
"How long have you liked me?"
"For as long as I can remember. I even told Jo about you quite a few times!" Marcy chipped, easing into a rant.
"...she was all like 'do you two realize he likes her too?' So I said yes. And then,"
"Wait, what?!"
"It's not my fault she never listens to anything I say. But you're totally awesome! You.."
Sasha lovingly fell into bliss, cherishing this moment with Marcy. Listening to the hums of her voice. How smooth and soft it sounded, and how it made her fall even more in love when it dropped into her ears. This was it, nothing would change after today. Nothing could separate them. The only way out was in. Sasha grinned down at Marcy, heart full. And Marcy laughed, brightening their room and taking her thoughts away from everything that happened in those last three months.
