Spar in the Yard

Wednesday wakes up to the sound of familiar laughter floating through her family home. It’s light and yet it somehow fills the space of whatever room she is in. Wednesday would deny it if she were ever asked but this particular laugh caused an absolute swarm of bees in her stomach.

This is an anomaly; Enid is never awake before the young writer. On the weekends at Nevermore Enid would sleep in until noon and on weekdays she’d hit her alarm no less than five times. Wednesday makes her way downstairs to determine the cause of her friend's sudden desire to be an early bird.

Enid is in the kitchen with her father making a mess of things by the looks of it. There is flour and batter on every available surface and the wall. Kitty is taking care of the latter, his tongue scraping everything but the paint off. The blonde and her father are also covered in what Wednesday can only assume is pancake batter.

It takes them a moment to notice that someone else has entered the room and Wednesday takes this time to observe the unlikely pair. Her father is clearly already charmed by the young wolf. They finish laughing, Enid wiping tears from her eyes as she finally looks over. “Morning Willa.”

The nickname is stupid and doesn't even really make sense but the goofy smile that accompanies it is worth it in Wednesday’s mind. She contemplates for a moment shooting it down but remembers the sadness in Enid’s voice last night and decides against it. “Since when do you know how to cook Sinclair?”

Her father begins spooning the batter onto the flat top, while Enid wipes down the counters. “It’s just pancakes. You mix a few ingredients and voila. Plus, your dad did most of the work.” This is surprising for Wednesday. She had only seen her father cook a handful of times, she had also assumed her parents just simply didn’t enjoy it.

“Good morning my little storm cloud, I’ll be sure to burn a couple just the way you like it.” Her father throws her a grin over his shoulder and then quickly refocuses on flipping the flapjacks. Enid finishes cleaning up most of the mess they made and makes her way towards the ravenette. “So, what are we doing today apart from torturing your brothers?” The blonde’s head tilts to the side just enough for Wednesday to find it endearing. Enid is close enough now that the shorter girl can feel the warmth radiating off of her.

“I am going to take advantage of this off time to get some extra writing done, you can do whatever you want as long as it’s quiet.” Wednesday avoids her friend’s eyes and instead looks straight ahead at her father's back as he flips copious amounts of the sugar filled breakfast food. Enid lets out a whine beside her.

“Wednesday what was the point of dragging me out here if we aren’t going to hang out together.” Wednesday turns to face her at this, a pout has formed drawing the wolf’s lips downwards. “My little scorpion Enid is right; you should be a better host. You could always spar in the yard. You enjoy sparring and I bet a werewolf would make a more than adequate partner, don’t you think so?” Wednesday turns to her father now, unsure of how to feel about his interruption. She could always use some extra practice to hone her skills and Enid’s strength would prove a challenge.

“Very well we can start shortly after breakfast. Don’t expect me to go easy on you Sinclair.” Enid jumps in place a little, excitement written all over her face. “Wouldn’t dream of it, Addams.”

W&E

Later that morning the two girls made their way outside. Wednesday dressed in all black, Enid dressed in just a robe. “Turn around Wednesday.” The shorter girl scoffs at the absurdity of the situation she finds herself in but nonetheless obeys. She hears the robe hit the ground and then bones cracking as they grow and reshape.

It takes less than a minute before she feels something wet touch the back of her hand. Enid is sitting on all four paws in wolf form looking not unlike a puppy. It really is a sight to behold, her fur is golden with the signature highlights on top of her head. Her paws are massive, bigger than Kitty’s by a long shot, and her teeth are sharper than the best knife in Wednesday’s vast collection.

Who could’ve ever imagined that the gentlest person to ever walk this Earth could transform into a beast capable of destroying anything in its path. Enid is looking up at her, blue eyes just as sparkly as they are in human form. “Back up mutt, your breath smells.” The wolf lets out a whine, but does as she is told.

They went over boundaries earlier at breakfast, both realizing that Enid not being able to verbally communicate in her wolf form could potentially cause some misunderstandings. They had agreed that two taps on the arm would be a sufficient signal to forfeit the fight.

Wednesday notices movement out of the corner of her eye and low and behold her family has decided to spectate from the window. At least Thing had the decency to come outside to retrieve Enid’s robe, dragging it closer to the back door and away from the bloodshed that was soon to come.

Enid tenses her body in anticipation, lowering her center of gravity and letting out a growl. Wednesday pulls her knife, not one of the sharpest in her collection but it will serve just as well. She doesn't dwell on the fact that she chose this knife specifically in an effort to cause Enid minimal harm.

The start of the fight is a blink, and you miss it moment. Enid lunges in an attempt to knock the shorter girl over, but Wednesday had already anticipated such a move and holds her ground. In a blur she attempts to jump onto the wolf, but the blonde is quicker dodging at the last moment. Enid’s fangs are bared menacingly but Wednesday could never be afraid of the beast in front of her. She knows Enid well enough to know that she would never actually cause her any harm. She has also come to trust the wolf after the whole Hyde fiasco, so with that in mind she goes for Enid’s neck.

The wolf grabs the girl’s knife wielding arm between her teeth just hard enough to draw blood, but not enough to cause any real damage. The wolf takes this advantage and fully tackles the goth pinning her against the ground. She waits for the signal, but it doesn't come. Wednesday struggles and grunts underneath the wolf trying to break free. Her body eventually relaxes, and she looks into Enid’s eyes, both girls breathing heavily.

Enid drops her arm and pulls back slightly, proud of herself for besting the Addams heir. Wednesday takes the opportunity to raise the knife to the wolf’s now unprotected throat, barely stabbing. “You shouldn’t let your guard down so easily, Enid if I didn’t tolerate you, you’d be dead right now.”

The wolf lets out a low whine of disappointment as Wednesday stands dusting herself off. They get back into their starting positions and go again. They spar for a couple of more hours. Enid won a number of times but Wednesday won most of the time. Enid was ecstatic nonetheless and walked into the house afterwards looking like she had hit the jackpot.

Wednesday watched after Enid as she raced up the stairs to grab a shower, an amused smirk on her face. “You were going easy on her.” Her mother’s voice is close, the older woman is so soft footed the younger girl hadn’t heard her approach. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Her mother is looking at her with something one can only describe as adoration and affection. “I think it’s sweet that you care enough to spare her harm. Reminds me of your father and I when we were your age.”

Wednesday scoffs at the absurdity of the statement. Determined to get away from this conversation she makes her way towards the stairs taking them two at a time. “Make sure to tell Enid where the first aid kit is.” Her mother can be so insufferable at times it’s enough to drive any sane person into lunacy.

But she is right about one thing, Enid will need a little bit of patching up. With that thought in mind she grabs her own medical kit out of her room and makes her way to the bathroom where she can no longer hear the shower running. She knocks twice on the hardwood, heart beating just slightly faster than normal.

Enid opens the door, hair dripping with a towel wrapped snug around her body. “I’m almost done but don’t you have your own bathroom?” Wednesday keeps her eyes focused on Enid’s face, taking in her scars and the few new scratches she’d acquired this morning. “I do but that’s beside the point. Here.”

The shorter girl places the medical kit on the counter and is about to leave when Enid grabs her wrist. “Wednesday you know I’m really no good at this stuff would you mind giving me a hand?” If the young wolf’s face got a shade darker neither one of them mentions, it. “Fine, sit.”

With that Wednesday fully makes her way into the bathroom closing the door.
