Chapter 1 - The Start
Wednesday was livid since the plan had failed, she had been hunted by the authorities ever since. Moving from safehouse to safehouse until there was only a handful left. Now, she was down to the only one in the US.
The plan was simple, even a 5-year-old can understand it, however, her choice of trusting anyone other than herself may have caused it to fail. The plan was to get in, do the job, then get out. But what she didn’t count on was her accomplice being a coward and acting on impulse, ran and left her. Thankfully she managed to escape before the authorities arrived. But her abetter managed to get shot by one of the guards, effectively injuring him. Last she heard he was in a coma in a hospital downtown.
Now, she’s here. In one of the last few safehouses she owned. Getting up from her cot, she made her way to the kitchen to see how much food she had and see how long it would last, which it turns out; not much. She groaned at the prospect of having to go out to the small town nearby, undercover, to get some food. Oh well, she needed other supplies too anyways, she might as well go and get them all in one trip.
She looked through her things hoping to find clothes with color. Although she hated the option of wearing colored clothes and preferred a monotone aesthetic; she needed to blend in a lot more considering she had already gotten more than a few odd looks here and there.
When she finally found something acceptable, she changed and got ready to go outside. Despite not being like anyone else, she is capable and proficient at copying others. She reached the nearby supermarket and quickly went inside. it was easier to hide behind the aisles if she was to get caught, which is unlikely, but Wednesday was never the one to take chances.
Quickly buying food and other things that had caught her interest, she went to go and exit when she passed a police officer who recognized her and tried to stop her. The police officer was in the store for another person, but with Wednesday’s luck, of course, he would recognize her.
At the slightest hint that the police officer showed in recognizing Wednesday, she bolted through the exit and into the labyrinthine alleyways quickly losing the officer. Using this advantage, she quickly and sneakily returned to the safe house. She contemplated on what had just happened and planned her next course of action. She wouldn’t go down this easily.
Enid let out a frustrated sigh as she walked through the hallways making a beeline towards the armory. It took the local police a couple of days to relay the information about the case. It’s a very high-profile case for goodness sake! Could they be any slower?
She was subconsciously growling as she walked the rest of the way; her co-workers gave her a wide berth, afraid of the viciously growling ball of sunshine.
She walked into the armory and immediately started working on getting her equipment ready for her assignment. Expecting this to be a long and tiring, multi-day mission, she packed multiple bags, mostly containing non-perishable food, a bit of water, medical supplies… etc.
She couldn’t help but overthink. She might not have contact with anyone; she might even be miles away from civilization during her assignment. She would rather be prepared than suffer and die.
After packing, she took the duffel bag and headed out, intending to go home. Her assignment didn’t start until the following day, so she has today free. After a brisk 15-minute walk, she made it home and instantly started to pack her personal belongings (i.e. Clothes, and other sanitary items). After she was done, she placed both duffel bags on her bed and glanced at the clock. She was surprised to see that it only took her half an hour.
Since Enid has the rest of the day to herself, she decided to just relax, and take a breather before one of her biggest missions yet. Although she has had many high-profile cases before, this case was unlike any other. There are a lot of inconsistencies in this case that just don't line up with anything.
She stopped herself before she thought any deeper about this. Enid was supposed to be relaxing, not analyzing the case; she wasn’t even in that division! She stood up and went to grab a cup of good coffee. It might be her last one for a while but whatever happens, she will succeed because Sinclairs never fail. She took her coffee and stood outside, on her balcony, preparing what tomorrow is going to bring her.
