Chapter 1
Alice never pretended to know everything.
She knows that she has a lot to learn and she likes the prospect of it.
But even if those two statements are true. She'd like to add some clarification.
She doesn’t know everything but still, she knows more things than Misses Insufferable aka Narcissa Black.
Narcissa is just an entitled Slytherin heiress to not say something else. But it seems like Alice has been cursed by who knows who because ever since first grade she had to be in the same class as Narcissa. This year though, they finally have one time period separate. it may not be much but Alice works with what she’s given. This year she took arithmancy, while Narcissa chose divination. Which in Alice’s opinion is proof that Narcissa is not as smart as she pretends to be. Only crazy people choose arithmancy. It’s full of nonsense and pseudo-predictions based on nothing concrete. In total contradiction with arithmancy which is a much harder subject where predictions are based on numbers and not foolishness such as freaking tea leaves. Alice could literally write a whole essay on why arithmancy is better than divination. And she did. But that’s not the point. The point is that Narcissa isn’t as smart as other people think she is.
Since first year Alice always had to compete with this snake princess. But she always managed to stay on top. Even if it was only by 1 point, she was always the first, on top, the number one.
Until today.
This morning while in class for the defense against the dark art lesson, they received their homework result and Narcissa was not 1 but 5 points ahead of Alice.
When she turned her head to see Narcissa her blood boiled even more. The snake princess wasn’t even happy or bragging about it. No. She had already put the test in her bag and was waiting for the class to begin. Narcissa seemed really indifferent about it. And Alice could swear that she actually seemed ashamed of it.
What the hell.
After 4 years of fighting to get the best grade and she finally beat Alice, she doesn't even smile. What is wrong with her? Alice just stared in complete madness. That’s all ? 4 years for that?
She must have been staring for way too long. Narcissa must have felt it. Because she just turned her head too and is now watching Alice before letting a small smile appear on her lips and then got back to watching straight ahead waiting for the professor to speak.
Everything seems surreal for Alice.
Narcissa smiled at her? And it did not even feel like a winning smile but a shy and thigh one. More like … more like an excuse ??
That’s not normal. Something's up, Alice thought. Narcissa should have been celebrating or at least thrown a snarky line in her direction. Anything… but not a shy and sorry smile.
This forced smile really threw Alice off guard that she is now standing at the entrance of the library debating if going up to Narcissa is really a good idea. Now that she’s reflecting upon it, it really seems like a bad idea. What if it’s just a little ruse for Alice to make a fool of herself.
But before, she had time to retreat and go back to the Gryffindor tower, they made eye contact
