MIDNIGHT
"MIDNIGHT"
"MIDNIGHT"
Anne cautiously crept through the forest, her flashlight illuminating the path ahead. Marcy had left markings on the trees for Anne to follow, but she was starting to wonder if she was going in circles. Anne had been walking for ages, I don’t remember the walk being this long. She thought to herself, checking her phone. Almost 12, Marcy should be waiting for her in the cave already.
At first Anne was surprised that her phone could still tell an accurate time, but at times like this, she was grateful. Anne wanted to call out Marcy’s name but she didn’t know how far away she was from Wartwood, none of the Planters nor the residents if Wartwood knew she and Marcy had snuck out.
Suddenly another flashlight through the darkness on her left, she almost yelped before she realized it was Marcy and she quickly covered her mouth. Following the light she carefully ducked into the cave, turning off her flashlight. Once Marcy saw her enter, she did the same.
“I thought something happened to you, or maybe I didn’t leave enough markers!” Marcy spoke in a hushed, but not quite whisper voice.
“I don’t know why I took so long either, but thanks for lighting the way” Anne used the same volume.
Her eyes finally adjusted and again she saw the beautiful cave, it seemed even more enchanting in the night. Sitting beside Marcy she asked, “what do you think made this cave? I’m sure it was natural but like, aren’t perfectly round caves like really rare?” She tried to remember anything she knew about caves.
“Well, this cave isn’t perfect per say, but yes! This type of cave is extremely rare! Quite exquisite if you ask me. It a 1 in….” Marcy’s eyes seemed to gleam with excitement as she info dumped about different cave structures.
When Marcy stopped for a breath Anne spoke. “Well I for one think this cave is perfect.”
“And why’s that?” Marcy’s eyes sparkled with interest.
“Because you’re here” Anne spoke softly.
“W-whuhh” Marcy fumbled, seemingly flustered by the comment.
Anne was too shocked with what she said, it was very out of character. “I mean- UH NOTHING” Anne stuttered, looking away quickly.
Why Anne Whyyy she groaned to herself in her head.
“Anne” Marcy spoke.
“Yeah? W- whassup?” She turned back.
Marcy grabbed both of Anne’s hands, making her jump slightly. “Why do you like me? Is there a reason?”
“That seems like a pretty serious question I-“
“Just tell me”
“Alright well for starters you’re smart and funny. I find you adorable and you’re unbearably pretty” Anne confessed, looking away from embarrassment. “Your way better at everything than me and, I’m not even sure why you’d like someone like me..”
Marcy pulled their hands closer and dropped one to grab the side on Anne face gently, turning Anne’s face back to her own.
“Don’t diss yourself Anne, there’s so many things that I can’t do and you can. You’re athletic and emotionally strong. You have the biggest, kindest heart it know and you’re so selfless. We can’t all be good at everything Anne, believe me.”
“The biggest heart can only hold so much..” she muttered, closing her eyes. Marcy suddenly kissed her on the lips. Her eyes widened. Anne pushed Marcy back covering her mouth.
“Wh- huh!?” Anne studdred.
Marcy turned away, looking ashamed and quickly left the cave, dropping something rectangular from her bag in the process.
