Ann Walker finally goes on a date with Anne Lister
Note
This is just maximum fluff and minimum angst. I hope you like it. I love a brave version of Ann Walker. Of course, backgammon games..

‘I’m your dirty little secret. Aren’t I?’ Anne screamed. She wanted everyone to hear her words. All of Halifax and surrounding districts. Then Mariana could feel the pain she was feeling right now. Only as loud as she screamed she knew Mariana wouldn’t care. Would she? ‘You’ll marry him and be Mrs Charles fucking Lawton and I’ll just be your side dish whenever you get bored with him. No way! That’s not going to happen ever again.’
’You always say that then I call you and you come running to me like a love sick puppy.’ Anne’s anger raged within her. ‘No Mary. I’ve had enough. I want someone who will love me for me and not keep my dangling waiting for half an hour of bliss then weeks of frustration waiting for you to want me enough which will never happen.’ Anne felt calm. She knew what she was saying was true. Mariana didn’t respect her. She doubted if Mariana really loved her. There might have been a time when the idea that Mariana loved her was feasible, Not now! Anne was sick of being strung along like a puppy on a lead who could be trained to do what their owner said.

Anne saw a bench in the distance and raced to it to sit down. They had been walking around Shibden Hall. It was exhausting work arguing with the woman whom she thought loved her. It was blatantly obvious that Mariana only loved her for what she could get out of her. A quick fuck when she wanted it. Anne watched Mariana as she strolled towards her. That smug look on her face told her all she needed to know. That woman wasn’t ever going to let her go. Anne needed to compose herself. She knew what happened every time they argued they would fall into each others’ arms and fuck each other senseless.

That wasn’t going to happen today. She was glad she asked Mariana to go for a walk with her. Here out in the open there was less chance that would happen. Only she knew she couldn’t trust Mariana as far as she could spit not that she would do that.

They sat in silence for a beat until it became unbearable. Anne rose to leave but before she could Mariana reached over and grabbed her arm. ‘One for the road, Freddy.’ Then Anne heard a voice in the distance. ‘Miss Lister, how are you?’ Anne’s eyes brightened. She had been saved by her young neighbour who happened to appear at the right time. ‘I was just walking past and noticed you were sitting outside with your friend.’ Mariana scrunched her nose up but kept quiet. ‘Who is this insipid young thing?’ She hissed between her teeth. ‘I would thank you to be civil towards Miss Walker. She has had a crush on me for longer than you ever did.’ Mariana scoffed. ‘She’s too young for you. She’s only 18.’ Anne snarled through her teeth. ‘Could you mind your tongue. She is 29 and treats me better than you ever did. I am not sure she would be someone I would want to marry but a little flirting never hurt me.’

‘You’re flirting with someone who’s a carton of eggs younger than you. I don’t know which is worse her crush or your flirting. Anne Lister, look at yourself. You’re probably old enough mentally to be her mother.’ Anne reach over with her free hand to ease Mariana’s grip on her arm before Miss Walker could see what was happening. Then she stood and walked over to Ann. ‘Miss Walker would you like me to take you for a walk around Shibden Estate.

Ann nodded. She never imagined Miss Lister would want to take her for a walk around her estate. ‘ What about your friend?’ Ann asked sincerely. ‘Doesn’t she want to come for a walk with us?’ Anne shook her head. ‘I think the soon to be Mrs Lawton has a wedding to think about.’ Anne linked her arm with Ann’s and the strolled around Shibden. She pointed out her favourite places where she would play as a child. Ann was a captive audience.  Anne could see she had stars in her eyes. She couldn’t take advantage of her even if she wanted to. She could see Mariana spying on them from behind the barn. ‘Miss Walker, would you like to go inside the hall and meet my aunt, father and sister?’ Ann nodded. She didn’t dare tell Miss Lister that she had already met her family because she would visit Shibden at least once a month.

This was her monthly visit. As they walked into the hall arm in arm they could hear everyone chatting. Ann smiled. Aunt Anne was waiting at the door to greet them. ‘I knew we would see you soon. Miss Walker.’ Anne looked surprised. ‘Oh, don’t look like that, Antsy. We see Miss Walker about once a month and we enjoy her company.’ Ann smiled. ‘What have I told you before, Aunt?’ Aunt Anne smiled. ‘Sorry, Annie. I keep forgetting.’

Anne couldn’t believe how close her aunt and Ann Walker were. Her aunt would never allow Mariana to call her aunt. Then Mariana appeared at the door. ‘I think you should leave Miss Belcombe. Your presence isn’t wanted her.’ Mariana looked at Anne who confirmed what her aunt was saying with a nod. Mariana left in a huff. It was obvious from the cheering as she drove away that she was the least liked person there.

‘Now, Annie did you remember we were going to have a backgammon tournament today.’ Ann nodded. She held out a bag which Anne hadn’t seen her carry and pulled out her backgammon board, chips and die. ‘I have been practising today I am a good gammon player, Miss Walker.’ Anne boasted. Ann smiled. ‘I am sure you are, Miss Lister.’Aunt Anne frown. ‘Could we have less of this Miss business. I am sure it is safe to call each other by your given name, Antsy, Annie.’ Aunt Anne said as she looked both of them in the eye. She knew Ann Walker was smitten with her niece. She had told her so and she could see Anne needed someone better than Mariana Belcombe.  ‘Come into the palour where we can play on the coffee table there.’ Marian said. ‘We will all play two games with our opponents. I will play Annie and you can play Aunt, Anne.’

Marian retrieved their backgammon board from the games cupboard. They set up the boards. Aunt Anne and Marian sat together while Anne sat with Annie who seemed so excited to be sitting so close to her. They played their first two games rather slowly. Anne watched Annie out of the corner of her eye. She could see she made strategic moves to ensure she would win and she did. Marian was deflated . She had played Annie before and beaten her but today Annie seemed determined to prove that she was the best. They switched players. Annie played with Aunt Anne. Anne and Marian played together. Anne had only been able to scrap one win. So, she needed to win these two games to play Annie Walker and for the first time in her life she wanted to do that. Ann grinned across at her as the stood and swapped places. Aunt Anne smiled at Annie which didn’t go unnoticed by Anne.

‘What are you scheming now, Aunt?’ Aunt Anne rolled her eyes. ‘Why would I be scheming anything. Annie and I are just enjoying each others’ company. It’s not illegal. Is it?’ Anne shook her head. Yet, she had a feeling her aunt and young neighbour were up to something. She could see the glint in her aunt’s  and Annie’s eyes. What were they scheming, she wondered. Then she knew she would find out soon enough. She had to focus on the two games with Marian and win. She would find out later what was going on.

Marian was easier to beat than she had thought. She knew Marian was slightly better at the game than what she was and she wondered why Marian was making the stupidest mistakes and it seemed she was losing on purpose. Annie smiled. She had beaten Aunt Anne in both games. It was then that Anne realised she had to face off with Annie who seemed confident to win but not cocky like most people were.

Marian stood so Annie could take her seat. She moved and sat next to her sister. Marian smiled. Anne didn’t know what she was getting herself into. ‘Now, before we begin this game there is a small prize at the end.’ Marian said. Anne loved to win prizes as long as it was something good.  ‘Now, if you win Annie has told us she would love to take you out for dinner this evening and she will pay. If she wins then you will have to take her out for dinner and you will be paying for the meal.’ Aunt smiled. ‘Well, that was what we decided the last time Annie visited.’

Anne looked at her Aunt then at Annie. ‘So, you had this worked out a month ago. How did you know I would be home?’  Anne asked slightly surprised that they had organised this without telling her. ‘I have your schedule on the fridge, Antsy. It’s okay Annie here was prepared to wait and until you were home.’ Annie smiled. ‘You know I don’t like matchmakers.’ Annie laughed. ‘Anne Lister, what gave you the idea that your aunt and sister and trying to match us together.’ Anne’s eyebrows shot up.’Why would they do that when I am capable of deciding for myself who would be a good partner for me.’ Annie smiled again. ‘And you think I am partner material, Annie?’ Ann nodded. ‘Let’s get on with the game, girls. I am itching to see who will win and who will pay.’

Annie rolled the die first because she had won the most games. She moved her markers deftly around the board and in the fastest time Anne had ever played a game of backgammon Annie won.

‘What happens if we both win a game?’ Anne looked at Annie. She already knew the answer. Anniie would win because she had won the most games. She threw the die on the board. ‘Are you giving up so easily, Antsy?’ Anne nodded. ‘Even if I win she has won the most games so she would be the outright winner.’ Annie grinned. Anne Lister was giving up on something. ‘You give up so easily, Anne Lister. Come on. Play me again and then we can decided who the winner is.’ Annie said. ‘Let’s say that first game was practise and start again.’ No one did that, Anne thought. ‘Why, Annie?’ Annie smiled because I think you deserve a second chance.’ the meaning of Annie’s words weren’t misunderstood by anyone in the room.

So’ Little Annie Walker thinks I need a second chance. I wonder why she thinks that way. Anne thought.  Her Aunt looked at her. They set up the board again and since Annie had won more games she rolled the die first again. Anne had watched her play her sister then her aunt. She had seen how competitive Annie was only she didn’t seem to be interested in winning. She make the silliest moves. Anne smiled as she put her last chip off the board. They set the board up to play again. This game was over faster than Anne thought a game could be. Annie wasn’t playing her best game again both Aunt Anne and Marian were smiling. ‘Is this what you planned, Aunt? For me to win so Annie here could take me out for dinner tonight. You are matchmaking.’ Aunt shook her head. ‘No, It was Annie’s idea. All Annie. She just wanted us to help her. She need a boost of courage to ask  you out. We thought a game or two of backgammon would give her that courage, Antsy.’ Anne could see Annie nodding her head out the corner of her eye.

‘Miss Walker, I don’t bite. All you had to do was ask me. All I could have said was yes or no but I do like your approach and I am sure we will have a great time together. Are we going to dress up?’ Annie nodded. ‘So you will need to go home and change.’ Annie shook her head. ‘she has a lovely dress here in Marian’s room for just such an occasion.’ Anne smiled. ‘You have given this lots of thought, Annie.’ Annie grinned. ‘I have wanted to ask you out on a date for a long time, Anne Lister. Only you were always with someone. Your aunt told me that she was getting married but that didn’t seem to matter to her. She was chasing you and cajoling you to be with her.’ Anne was stunned. She didn’t know what to say but when she spoke she could see all three pairs of eyes were on her. ‘Mariana had been the love of my life.’ Annie nodded. ‘For a long time and when she told me she was getting married I was heartbroken until she told me she wanted us to see each other.’ Marian nodded. ‘I couldn’t believe it. She still wants me in her life. What a fool I was to think that. As you probably heard what I said to her today, Annie. It is true. I was only a side dish never the main meal.’ Annie sighed. ‘What do you want from me?’

‘I want first course, second course, dessert and a few after dinner mints, Anne.’ Aunt Anne blushed. ‘Well, she did ask. Didn’t she?’ Marian nodded. ‘I want all of you, Anne Lister no matter what you do or what you look like or how you act. I want it all for always.’ Anne frowned. ‘Why, Annie?’ Then she looked into Annie’s eyes. ‘I am sure you can see why, Antsy. Just take her out for dinner there can be no harm in that and see what happens.’  Marian said. ‘She is single and has loved you for a very long time.’

‘How long, Annie?’ Anne asked sincerely. ‘As long as I can remember.’ Ouch, Anne thought.

They had a couple of hours before their dinner date.. Annie remembered Marian had mentioned that she had a bathtub in the bathroom she shared with her aunt. ‘I think I would like to soak for a while. I have a lot to think about before Anne and I go on our date.’ Marian smiled. She stood up and motioned Annie to follow her up the stairs and into her bathroom. Anne waited until she heard the water running to fill the tub.

‘Aunt, do you seriously think that someone who is 12 years younger than me would be good for me.’

‘Yes, I do and you will see that once you get to know her better. She is a lovely young lady to have around. We enjoy her visits. Every time she comes here I picture you and her together.’ Anne’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She retrieved it only to see Mariana’s name flash on the screen. ‘What does she want now?’ Aunt Anne huffed. ‘I don’t know because I am not going to answer it.’

Her phone buzzed for a few more seconds then it went quiet until it chimed to let Anne know there was a voice mail. ‘Play it, Anne. Let’s see what Mariana Belcombe has to say for herself.’ Anne played the voice mail. She was shocked when she heard what Mariana had to say. ‘Your mine, Freddy and no one else can have you while I am alive.’ Aunt Anne shook her head. ‘She has no claim on you. Does she, Antsy?’ Anne cringed. They had taken the sacrament and promised they would be together for life. Anne shook her head. ‘No, aunt. She has no claim on me because she is marrying a man in a month’s time just for his fortune and her rise into high society.’  Good, Aunt Anne thought. ‘Now go upstairs and get ready for your date. I am sure Annie will stun you with what she is going to wear.’

Anne stood and made her way up to her bedroom. She could her Marian and Annie giggling in the bathroom. She didn’t want to know what they had been talking about. Anne was sure it wasn’t the kind of joke she would laugh at but she was prepared to give Annie five stars for the courage she has shown in making this date possible. Did she think date? Yes!

It was half an hour later when Anne appeared back in the sitting room. She wondered who the gorgeous lady was who was sitting on the sofa chatting with Marian. She didn’t think that it could have been Annie Walker. Then Annie lifted her head. What a transformation a lovely dress and a bit of make up can do to make someone look a few years older than she is. Anne blushed. I think I am a little bit in love with you, Miss Walker. She thought.

They gazed their eyes over one another. ‘You scrub up pretty good, Miss Walker.’

‘As do you, Miss Lister. Do you have a restaurant in mind where you would like to go? Money isn’t an issue.’ Anne smiled. ‘In fact I do. It’s a restaurant I frequent often and it’s out of the way. No, I haven’t taken Mariana Belcombe there. So, don’t worry she won’t find us.’ Annie smiled. Anne called an uber. She didn’t want to drive if she drank too much and they could have some fun if the evening was a blast.

She looked over at Annie and smiled. The uber arrived twenty minutes later. They bid everyone a good night and walked out into the early evening. Anne was a gracious gentleman as always. She opened the door for her date. ‘If we are going on a date I need to act like a proper gentleman.’ Annie smiled. She had heard Anne Lister was brash and harsh but she had never seen this side of Anne and she loved it.

Annie climbed into the uber and Anne closed the door then made her way around to the other side. She slide into the car and sat as close as she could to Annie without making her feel uncomfortable.

Anne gave the driver directions then told him if it looked like someone was following them to just drive around for a while. I am sure Miss Walker here won’t mind paying the bill.’ As it was no one followed them and they arrived at the restaurant an hour later. It was located in a quiet town a few miles north of Halifax. Annie adored it as soon as she saw it. Anne gave the uber driver a large tip even though he said he couldn’t take it. ‘It’s payment for when you come and get up in about two hours time. Can you do that?’ He nodded. Anne stepped out of the car and strolled around to open Annie’s door. She extended her hand for Annie to take and she graciously helped her step out of the car. Annie smiled. Anne closed the door and the uber driver slowly drove away. ‘I didn’t know this restaurant existed, Anne. How long have you know about it?’  Anne shrugged. ‘I’m not sure, Annie. Let’s go inside and get settled for our meal. Annie nodded. Anne opened the door and motioned Annie to walk in. ‘Ah, Miss Lister, we have been expecting you. I have your table ready. Can you follow me?’ They both nodded. He lead them to the far corner of the restaurant. ‘I am sure you will be satisfied with this table. It is as you requested, Miss Lister.’ Annie looked at Anne puzzled. She wondered what Anne had requested. Anne pulled her chair out. It was then that she realised what Anne had requested. It was very private. Anyone coming into the restaurant wouldn’t see them. Annie smiled. ‘Thank you!’ Anne looked puzzled. ‘What for?’ Annie waved her arms around. ‘All this and so much more. So even if Miss Belcombe followed us here she would never see us. Would she?’ Anne shook her head. ‘Never!’ I just hope she isn’t waiting outside when we leave, Anne thought.

The server brought over two glasses of water and the drinks menu.  Annie didn’t indulge in alcoholic drinks but Anne enticed her to try just a small margarita. Annie agreed. Then she saw the size of the drink. ‘I thought you said it was a small margarita.’ Anne smiled. ‘It is!’ Annie’s eyes bulged when she saw Anne’s large margarita. ‘WOW! Can I have a taste of yours? It looks delicious and you can have a taste of mine. If that’s okay with you, Anne.’  Anne nodded. They exchanged drinks across the table. Annie couldn’t believe how fruity Anne’s margarita tasted.  Anne took a sip of Annie’s drink. It was one she hadn’t had before and it was good. They exchanged their drinks again.

Their server brought them the food menu. He suggested they try the special of the day. Anne asked what it was. He said it was a surprise meal and everyone who had tried it so far had loved it. ‘Well!’ Anne said. ‘This has been a surprise day so let’s go with the special. I am sure we will like it.’ Annie looked at Anne and nodded. She was hoping it would be something she would like.

‘Now, Miss Walker, I want to know as much as you are prepared to reveal about yourself to me.’ Annie blushed. ‘I don’t know where to start. I have so much I want to tell you, Anne.’ Anne nodded encouraging Annie to continue. ‘As you know I have had a crush on you for a long time. My sister, Elizabeth would often tease me about it and she would say there is no way Anne Lister of Shibden Hall would want to go on a date with you, Annie. So, I am sure she will be surprised when I tell her about this.’ Anne nodded. She was finding it hard to believe that she was on a date with her young neighbour and all because of a game of backgammon. How quaint! She thought. Then she motioned Annie to continue with her story. ‘I love to sketch and paint. I mostly do landscapes but quite often I will do a portrait of people who mean so much to me.’ Anne looked at her quizzically. ‘so, have you done a portrait of me?’ Annie nodded. ‘How many?’ Annie held up seven fingers. ‘WOW! That many. Can I see them?’ Annie shook her head. ‘I am working on one I would like to give  you then I will show you the others’ Okay!!’ Anne nodded.

They ordered their meals. When they were served they ate in companionable silence. Annie still couldn’t believe that she was out on a date with Anne Lister. Yet, here they were in a restaurant a few miles north of Halifax. Anne smiled at Annie. ‘What are you thinking about Miss Walker?’  Annie looked at Anne. She didn’t know how to answer Anne’s question without feeling foolish. Only she wanted Anne to know how she felt.

‘I..I was thinking how good it feels to finally be on a date with you. I never thought this was possible, Anne. Yet, here I am with you.’

Anne was stunned that Annie Walker thought so highly of her when she wouldn’t have given Annie a second glance. Was it possible that Anne had spent two decades waiting for someone to call her only when she was in the mood. While Annie Walker had been there all this time waiting for the right moment. How as that possible? She never imagined anyone would do that for her. She looked over at Annie who seemed to be the epitome of innocence and beauty. She wondered how Annie would feel about her once she got to know her.

Yet, deep down Anne felt that Annie would accept her. She could already see that in the way Annie looked at her as if she had painted the sky and hung the stars and planets there. ‘Annie, why is it that you want to be with me?’  Anne asked with a concerned look on her face. ‘You do realise I am not good enough for someone who is so sweet and innocent.’ Ann frowned. ‘Why do you have such a poor opinion of yourself, Anne Lister?  You’re just like my family telling me I don’t know what I want. I wish you would realise that no one is perfect. We all make mistakes and do things we shouldn’t. Isn’t that a part of being human?’ Anne turned her head. She didn’t want Annie to see her crying.

She didn’t know when Annie had put her arms around her and was cradling her head to her chest. She didn’t understand why Annie was holding her. She was suppose to be the strong one. Yet, she was allowing Annie to comfort her. She couldn’t remember the last time anyone had done that apart from her aunt.

Annie pulled away then gently brushed Anne’s cheek with her thumb. Anne Lister, there is no one in this whole world I want to be with more than I want to be with you and before you say it I am not daft like my tribe think. I know about the rumours that are circling around Halifax about you. Okay!’ Anne nodded.’I think we should pay our bill and go somewhere quiet. Do you have somewhere you like to go and think?’ Anne frowned. She tried to think of a place they could go and talk Until Annie suggested a place where she loved to sit and listen to the birds in spring. It wasn’t far from Shibden.

Annie paid for the meal and they walked out into the night. Their uber driver was there waiting for them. He was standing by his car scrolling on Facebook.

Then his eyes lit up. ‘Miss Walker, Miss Lister, are we ready to go on our next adventure.’ He opened the rear door. Anne motioned for Annie to step in the car. Then Anne followed her.

Annie gave the driver directions on where she wanted to go. As they were driven to their destination Anne felt they were being driven into familiar territory only she couldn’t remember where they were.  It wasn’t until they reached their destination that Anne realised where they were.

They thanked the driver. ‘My pleasure to escort you lovely ladies.’ Then he handed them his card. ‘If you’re ever in need of transport anywhere call me.’ They nodded and he drove off.  Annie grabbed Anne’s hand and lead her down a track which took them to what seemed like unused to a pond.  There were a couple of benches to sit on. Annie chose the one closest to the pond. She motion for Anne to sit down and she sat beside her.

They sat in silence for a while until Annie spoke. ‘I brought you here so you could understand how I feel about life. Once there was a time when I couldn’t leave Crow Nest. It was too much for me to do that.’ Anne nodded to indicate she was listening. ‘Then I saw you boldly living your life without ever allowing what others were saying about you to affect how you felt about yourself.’ Anne smiled. She didn’t know anyone would see her that way. ‘You are my inspiration. You gave me hope that I could be me and no matter what others said about me their words would be like water off a duck’s back.’ Anne grinned. ‘I did that for you?’ Annie nodded. ‘You still do, Anne.’ Anne couldn’t believe what Annie was saying. ‘So, you’re telling me that my life helped you do what you do now like visiting my family at Shibden.’ Annie nodded. And I was putting up with second best, Anne thought. ‘You certainly were.’ Annie said confidently. ‘Why you put up with her I will never understand. How much does she mean to you, Anne?’

Anne looked at Annie. She had  often wondered how much Mary meant to her and she was never able to come up with an answer. She had thought her life with be nothing without Mariana Belcombe in it but today she felt different. She could see that Annie Walker was someone she could be with but was she prepared to dive in deep. She didn’t want to get hurt again.

Then she felt Annie’s hand on her cheek. Her thumb was gently brushing a tear away. When did she start crying again. Anne didn’t know. Annie wrapped her arms around Anne. ‘When did someone love you just for you?’ Anne shook her head. She couldn’t remember. She didn’t have an answer to that question. ‘I would say never.’ Anne felt herself nod. The fact of the matter was that she had never felt accepted by anyone other than her family and she was here with Annie Walker who seemed to accept her as she was. There were no strings, no conditions, just pure love.

Only Anne would not allow herself to imagine anything with Annie Walker until Annie spoke again. ‘You know we could give it a trial run. I am sure you would be happy with me and yet, I am afraid she will come looking for you and want you back. Then you will be gone. Anne Lister, I am prepared to take that risk if you are.’ Then Annie lent over and place a kiss on Anne’s cheek. It was just a light peck but enough for Anne to feel the love that came with that kiss.

Anne looked up at Annie. She felt herself nod again. Annie smiled. ‘Is that a yes?’ Anne nodded again. ‘Yes!’ And for the first time in a long time Anne felt confident that Annie would never treat her as if she was her dirty little secret. ‘How do we get you home, Annie?’  Annie smiled. ‘That’s easy.’ Annie stood and motioned for Anne to stand. She wrapped her arms around Anne. They stayed like that for a while until Annie unwrapped her arms. ‘You see home is wherever you are, Anne. It always has been. It always will be.’ Anne smiled. ‘Now, how do we really get you home?’

‘Just call our uber friend. I am sure he will be delighted to take us home.’ Anne pulled out his business card and her phone. She called him and they planned to meet where he dropped them off.

As they walked back to the pick up point Anne’s phone buzz in her hand. She looked at the caller ID. ‘Do you think I should answe….’Before she had time to finish her sentence Annie had snatched her phone and was answering the call. ‘Hi Freddy, are you busy right now. I need you.’ Annie smiled at Anne. ‘Hi Miss Belcombe. I think you might have the wrong number.’ Then she disconnected the call. ‘Yes, I know what you’re going to say. She will try again and again and again until you talk to her. That’s okay. I have a solution for that. It looks like you need a new phone and phone number.’ Anne looked puzzled until Annie pulled her arm back then threw Anne’s phone into the pond. ‘I am sure that she won’t be able to call you now.’ Anne smiled. Even though she had to buy another phone Annie had found the best way to stop Mariana Belcombe from annoying her. Unless she visited her at Shibden which was highly unlikely after the reception she got last time.

Their uber driver was waiting for them when they returned to the pick up spot. ‘Evening ladies, where are we going now?’ Anne was about to say Crow Nest. When Annie said. ‘Shibden Hall. I have a bet I have to pay.’ Anne looked at her. ‘Your aunt made a bet that I could win you over with only one date. I said that was impossible. So, I owe her ten quid. I think it was the best ten quid I have ever lost.’ Anne smiled. They climbed into the car.

They were standing outside Shibden about half an hour later. It seemed everyone was still up.  They walked inside the hall. Aunt Anne, father and Marian were watching a movie. Anne sat down on the sofa and Annie sat in her lap.

Annie leaned in and kissed Anne. The sound of their lips crashing together made Anne’s family look up from the tv. ‘I think you owe me ten quid, Miss Walker’

Annie reached into her bag and pulled out the ten quid. She handed it to Aunt Anne who smiled. ‘So, you asked and Anne there said yes.’ Anne looked at Annie. ‘Yes, she needed a little push to feel confident enough to ask her.that’s why we played backgammon. She could have beaten you but chose to let you win, Antsy. She is a backgammon wizard.’ Anne looked puzzled. ‘We play with her once a month and none of us have beaten her and probably never will.’ Anne looked surprised. ‘And you think you’re competitive, Antsy. Annie is the most competitive person I have ever met.’ Marian said. ‘How are you going home, Annie?’ Anne asked. ‘I thought I was home already.’ Annie smiled. ‘I hear you have a guest room I could use.’ Anne’s pouted. ‘Miss Lister, what’s wrong?’ Anne leaned over and whispered in her ear. ‘I know we have only just started going out and its only a trial but I would be love it if you would snuggle next to me in my bed.’ Annie nodded into Anne’s neck.

‘Would you like a drink before you go to bed, Annie?’ Aunt Anne asked as she stood and motion Annie to follow her into the kitchen. When Aunt Anne closed the door they hugged. ‘Did you get rid of her phone in the pond so that woman can’t call her?’ Annie nodded. ‘Good.’

‘Just before I threw it I told her she would need to get a new phone and a new number.’ Aunt Anne smiled. ‘How did she react to what you did?’

‘She seemed happy. I think she wishes she had thought to do that. We did though. Didn’t we?’

‘Yes! I hope we never see her again, Annie.’ the door opened and Anne walked in. ‘Are you talking about me because my ears are burning?’  Aunt Anne smiled. ‘Why would we be doing that, Antsy?’ Anne shrugged. ‘I am going to bed now, Annie. Are you coming with me?’ Annie smile. ‘Yes!’ As soon as you make me come I will come with you.’ Anne smiled. ‘You saucy little minx. What do you want for seconds?’ Anne looked at Annie sultrily. ‘More of first course. Please.’

Anne smiled and took hold of Ann’s hand. They walked up the stairs and into Anne’s bedroom. It was more spacious than Ann imagined. There were bookshelves on two walls stacked with books on every subject imaginable. There were only a few novels and they were classics, Jane Austen’s Emma and Pride and Prejudice and the Well of Loneliness only she couldn’t make out the authors name. Anne could see where Annie was looking. ‘That book was banned not long after it was published. You might want to read it one day. Not tonight though. I have other plans for us, Annie.’ Anne stood closer to Annie and wrapped her arms around her. She placed a peck on her cheek. It was to remind Annie that she was waiting for her to make the first move.

Annie flipped herself around in Anne’s arms and crashed their lips. It was the first time she had ever kissed anyone with so much passion. Of course, it wasn’t the first time she had been kissed. That was something she would rather forget about but in this moment it seemed to be easier than she thought.

She reached up and undid the buttons on Anne’s shirt. Anne’s scent filled her nostrils. It reminded her of all the places she had seen Anne. When she wondered if she would be with Anne as she is in this moment. Anne slumped her shoulders and allowed her shirt to fall to the floor.

Annie moved down to Anne’s trousers. She undid the belt, button and zip. They joined Anne’s  shirt on the floor. Anne stepped out of then. Annie looked at Anne who was standing in only her boxers and singlet. She didn’t’ seem to have a bra on. Annie smirked. ‘No boob holders?’ Anne shook her head. ‘Not every woman wants to suffocate her girls. I like them to feel free.’ Annie smirked. She had always been told that wearing a bra was a part of being a woman. Now, she was wondering if she should ditch hers.

‘Annie, come on, hurry up! I can’t wait any longer.’ Anne pulled her into a hug and began removing Annie’s clothes. It was easy. A light blue dress that zipped up at the back. Her bra which had only two hooks and eyes. Then her knickers. All lay at her feet . She gasped when Anne lifted her out of them and carried her over to the bed.

It was the most beautiful four poster bed she had ever seen. Annie smiled as she was sat gently onto the bed. Then Anne gently pushed her down and Anne lay beside her. She scooted over to give Anne more room.

Anne wrapped her arm around Annie’s waist. Their kisses were harsh and hurried. Anne’s tongue darted inside Annie’s mouth. It was something she had never experience then she touched Anne’s tongue with hers and the tussled for a few minutes. If this what being with Anne meant then bring it on. Annie thought.

Anne trailed kissed down Annie’s body between her breasts and over her stomach. The sensation was driving Annie wild. Her hips lifted off the bed without her assistance. She didn’t think that was possible. It was then that she heard Anne asking for permission to go deep inside her centre. Annie nodded. This is what she had been waiting years for to feel Anne inside her. She had fucked herself but this would be so much better and it was. ‘Oh!’ Anne screamed. ‘Harder please. I want you to fuck me so hard I feel the memory of it days after.’ Anne smiled. ‘Oh I plan to do that and more, Annie.’

Then Annie felt Anne insert two more fingers inside her. She thought she was stretched enough with two but four. Yet, it felt so good.

Then she felt Anne circle her clit with her thumb. Is this what heaven feels like? Moments later she felt a chilly around her centre. Anne had removed her hand. Annie’s hips were halted mid air. Annie moaned in frustration. ‘You’re still here, Annie.’  What? Annie thought. ‘You seemed so far away.’ Annie moaned. Anne crawled down between her legs and placed her head between them. Annie moaned the first time she felt Anne stroke her tongue over her clit. Her hips bolted upward from the bed. The feeling was amazing.

Anne continued to circle Annie’s clit with her tongue. Annie had to dive her fist into her mouth to stop herself from screaming loudly. She didn’t want the rest of Anne’s family know what they were up to. She could feel Anne grin into her thigh. Then she felt Anne’s fingers go deep inside her.

Anne pummeled her fingers in and out of Annie as her thumb caressed her clit. Annie could feel her climax building inside her then she crashed over the edge into her orgasm. She opened her eyes to find Anne looked down at her. If this was the definition of bliss. She had never known anything like it. Their lips crashed together. Annie could Feel Anne’s body vibrating above her. She gently pushed Anne over and onto her back then she pounced on her. The force shook Anne’s bed. ‘Annie, be gentle I am old remember.’ Annie laughed. ‘The might Anne Lister admitting she is old. Come on, after what you have just done to me. I don’t think so!’

Annie trailed soft kisses down Anne’s body. She was strong but also soft and tender. Anne pushed her head gently to where she wanted Annie to go. It wasn’t hard to know that Anne was desperate for release and Annie wanted to be gentle with Anne. Teasing was out of the question. Even though she would have love to have teased Anne for a beat. She could see that wouldn’t be a nice thing to do and since this was there first time together Annie imagined it would be rude to do that.

The aroma of Anne’s scent was breathtaking. She had never smelt anything like it and she could see when she was closer to Anne’s centre that she was dripping wet. ‘Is this all for me, Anne?’  She could feel Anne nodded above her.  How was it possible that in less than 24 hours she had Anne Lister wriggling beneath her and wanting Annie to make her come.

Annie slide two fingers inside Anne  who seemed reluctant to let her do that. She heard no and lifted her head. Anne looked as though she had gone into uncharted territory. Annie crawled back up along Anne’s body and kissed her. ‘Did I do something wrong, Anne?’ Ann’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. Anne’s heart broke. ‘No you didn’t do anything wrong, Annie. I just don’t know if I like being fucked like that.’  Annie nodded and slide back down Anne’s body. She traced her tongue around Anne’s clit. Anne tasted so good. She strummed it gently with her tongue. She could feel Anne’s hips rising off the bed with every swipe. Annie grinned when Anne screamed out her name. It was the most wonderful sound she had ever heard. She could feel Anne’s body shudder then she lifted her hips for once last time and came into Annie’s mouth.  Annie swallowed. Anne relaxed. It was everything Annie dreamed and more.

Annie crawled back up Anne’s body and gently kissed Anne on the cheek. She rolled over and landed on the bed next to Anne. They turned onto their sides and locked eyes. Anne was smiling so broadly Annie could see her pearly whites shining back at her.

‘Is this what you want, Miss Walker?’ Annie nodded. ‘Being here with me at Shibden and dealing with my family on a daily basis. How do you think you will cope with that.’ Not to mention my demand ex who seems to think I belong to her and ho one else, Anne thought. ‘I hope she never bothers you again. I am sure if she sees us together she won’t.’ Anne shook her head. ‘I don’t think us being together would deter her from trying to get me back into her clutches.’

‘Your aunt mentioned that she was getting married soon. How is it that she thinks she has a strong hold over you, Anne?’ Anne frowned and buried her head against Annie’s chest. ‘It’s complicated, Annie.’ Annie frowned. ‘Does it really need to be complicated, Anne?’ Anne shook her head. There was something about Miss Annie Walker that made her feel content. It helped her put some sense into her rather dull existence. She was only ever someone who would be called on when she was needed/wanted. Yet, Anne could see this woman laying beside her would never do that. She could see Annie would always treat her with understanding, compassion and love but could she love her in return. She didn’t know if that was possible. Romantic love was something younger people had. Romantic love was never going to be for her, not now she was in her early forties.

‘Dearest, what are  you thinking about?’ Annie asked as she pulled Anne from her thoughts. ‘Dearest! Am I that important to you already?’ Annie nodded. She was certain they could be together for life only she really didn’t know what Anne wanted. Anne didn’t know what she wanted. They still had so much to learn about each other. Could they do that? Annie wondered if it was possible.

‘Annie, what are you thinking?’ Anne eyed her quizzically. What was she thinking about? The past and how littered it was with her inability to find courage to break free from the way her tribe constantly belittled her and made her feel like an invalid. Her future without anyone to care for her. Or was it possible to stay grounded in the presence and just enjoy this moment? What was she thinking about? She had no idea. Her mind was muddled.  Anne looked at her with only concern and love. ‘Annie, talk to me. I want to know where you head is at. Where you would like to be tomorrow and what this moment means to you. I can see by your frown that life hasn’t been good for you.’ Annie shook her head. She didn’t want to go there right now. Not today. Maybe some other time when she felt more comfortable talking about what happened. It wasn’t impossible that that could happen. Wasn’t?

Anne had never imagined that someone would want to be with her. She wished Annie would open up to her more. That was all she wanted. She must have been deep in her thoughts when she heard gently snoring. She looked over  and Annie was sleeping peacefully. She had her arm wrapped around Anne’s waist.

That was how Anne woke the next morning. Annie’s arm still draped across her waist. Annie was still snoring. She escaped Annie’s grip and rose to start her day. She thought a brisk walk around Shibden would help her begin her day on a good footing tor the day. She donned her running shorts, vest and walking shoes Although she knew it would be a tad chilly outside a brisk walk would warm her up soon enough.

She strolled briskly outside just as the sun was beginning to rise. The scene before her took her breath away. She took out her phone to take a photo and realised she didn’t have her phone on her. Then she remembered where it was. So, she imagined she could show Annie this scene another day. Then she felt warm hands wrap around her body. ‘What are you doing up so early?’ Anne asked sincerely. ‘I was watching you dress and decided that if you were going for a walk around your estate I would like to go with you. If that’s okay with you.’ Anne smiled. She had never had anyone who wanted to do that. Mariana usually encouraged her to go alone. She liked having the bed all to herself. The one night stands didn’t hang around long enough. Most of them never saw the inside of Shibden. Yet, here was Annie Walker, the one who wasn’t really a morning person, wanting to go for a walk with her.

‘Which way would you like to go, Annie?’ Annie looked at her tentatively then said. ‘You lead the way. This is your home. I think you know it a bit better than what I do.’ Anne nodded.

Anne lead the way and showed Annie as much as Shibden. They were outside for nearly two hours when Annie’s stomach rumbled. ‘I think we need to get you back inside and give you a good hearty breakfast.’ They walked back towards the hall. It was only when Anne noticed a familiar car in front of the hall that she quickly took Annie into the nearby barn. We have a visitor I don’t want to see.’  Annie frown. ‘It’s Mariana Belcombe soon to be Mrs Charles Lawton. I don’t know why she is here. I will call Marian to see if she knows.’

Anne called her sister. She answered on the first ring. ‘I thought you would be calling since I could see you were out walking. Where is Annie?’ Anne explained that she had taken Annie for a walk around the estate. They had gotten so wrapped up in what they were doing that time seemed to slip by. It wasn’t until Annie’s stomach began rumbling that they realised it was breakfast time.  ‘So, why is she there?’ Anne yelled. She could feel the anger rising in her voice. ‘Don’t shoot the messenger.’ Marian said. ‘She is in the sitting room. I’m in the kitchen. You could sneak in and go up to your bedroom via the back stairs.’

She could do that. ‘but why is she there? Anne asked again. ‘Something about calling off the wedding. She said she did this for you, Anne.’ Annie looked at Anne who could see tears beginning to form in the corners of her eyes. ‘Can I call you back?’ Anne asked Marian. ‘Yes.’

Anne wrapped her arms around Annie. It seemed nearly impossible to convey what she was feeling. So she showed Annie in a way that she hoped Annie would understand. It was only a moment and Annie’s arms were wrapped gently around Anne. ‘We need to be totally honest with each other right now or else this will never work. I want to know if you really want to be with me. I know you said you do but as you can see she will never leave me alone. So you need to accept that she will often try to crash our party and spoil our fun. If you can deal with that tell me now please because I have had enough of chasing pipe dreams with anyone..’ Annie smiled. ‘Anne Lister. This is no pipe dream for me. This is what I have wanted for so long. I never imagined it was possible. Dearest, I love you. I’m in love with you. I always have been.’  Anne grinned broadly. ‘So, that’s a big yes. I think we need to go face her right now. Don’t we?’ Anne nodded.

They walked in through the back door of the hall. Marian was in the kitchen talking to Cordingley. It was the only way she could avoid that woman as the family often referred her. Father had made an excuse to go to his office and Aunt Anne suddenly had a headache and said she was going to for to lay down until it passed. What she really meant was until that woman was gone.

Anne walked into the sitting room. Annie closely followed behind her. Mariana was standing when Anne walked in. She was about to hug her when Annie stood beside her. Annie has this picture of Mariana Belcombe in her mind and it didn’t match the woman she was looking at. She could for the life of her understand why someone like Anne Lister would be with someone like Mariana Belcombe who seemed to look down her nose at her and Anne as they stood together. ‘Why is she here?’ Mariana asked as if she had the right to say who could be here. ‘She lives her and has done since….’Anne looked at Annie. ‘I don’t remember when and while it is nice to see you, Miss Belcombe. I think there is a time for visiting and it isn’t just before breakfast unless you stayed here overnight.’ Anne smiled. Annie seemed to have found some courage that Anne never imagined she would have. ‘So, I think you should leave because everyone would like to eat their breakfast in peace.’ Mariana was about to speak when Annie continued. ‘Yes, we know father is in his office and Aunt Anne is resting but it’s not for the reason you think.’  Mariana went to speak again. This time Anne interrupted her. ‘Go now before I have the hounds chase you off the property.’ Annie grinned. ‘You don’t have any hounds.’ Anne grinned. ‘How do you know that?’ Mariana frowned. Then stood up and left. As she slammed the front door Anne and Annie chuckled. Marian stood next to Anne as they watched Mariana drive off Shibden hopefully never to be seen again.

Aunt and father were told she had gone. So they entered the dining room for breakfast. Anne and Annie were smiling broadly. Aunt Anne wondered if she had ever seen her elder niece so happy.

Anne and Annie told the family that Annie was moving into Shibden over the next week or so and maybe one day they would get married. Until then they were going to enjoy this moment while they could. And as Anne said ‘Every moment is an inexplicable delight packed with potential.’
