“so some dude just straight up tried to grab you?” Yoko said after gulping down another way too massive bite of cereal. Enid recognizing her tone of voice as the one she usually used before pulling a baseball bat from under the counter at the bar

“I mean he was probably just trying to be intimidating and, in my space” Enid shivered a bit at the memory of suddenly being cornered by the guy “Even though Wednesday didn’t really give him the chance” she added after a short pause

“remind me to send her a thank you card for keeping you safe in my absence then” Yoko said stuffing another spoonful into her mouth in the process

“I can take care of myself you know” Enid said taking her own, much more reasonable, bite of her toast. Which had really lost it’s appeal after Yoko had reminded her that they had pancake mix. The expression on Yoko’s face coming from someone who had gotten Enid out of trouble way too many times over the years. A fact that Enid was choosing to ignore at the moment

“also you know I respect dark and mysterious like crazy” Yoko started. Enid shooting her a look both for talking with her mouth full and also because her nicknames for Wednesday were really getting out of hand at this point. Yoko at least corrected one of the issues by swallowing her cereal before continuing

“but this is like what? Two out of two exes who seem to hate her? Are we sure she’s not like... secretly an ass?”

“she’s not an ass” Enid said knowing that Wednesday might rub a lot of people the wrong way but that she wasn’t actively unkind to most people. At least not often. And trusting Yoko to take her word for it since she wasn’t about to reveal stuff that Wednesday had said to her without her consent “plus I’m pretty sure Tyler isn’t an ex”

“she told you that?” Yoko raised an eyebrow

“...no. But she would have told me if he was” Enid admitted fully believing it considering how open Wednesday had been about the situation with Aya “also I’m like 80% sure that she’s not into boys”

“80?” Yoko teased. Enid pointedly ignoring the wiggling eyebrows

“yeah Kent mentioned he got that vibe from her. Plus, you know. Gaydar” Enid shrugged raising an eyebrow at the way Yoko scoffed in response

“honey you don’t have gaydar” Yoko said pointing an accusatory spoon towards the blonde “plus dark’n’stormy is about as unreadable as a wall”

“you don’t spend as much time with as me” Enid defended herself

“because she gives me murder eyes I don’t particularly feel like being stabbed with a literal sword” Yoko countered

“she isn’t going to stab you. She actually respects you like a lot. She was just proving a point about not liking me hanging out at the bar” Enid said feeling herself blushing slightly at Wednesday’s seeming protectiveness of her. Which was starting to be a trend

“well then you can tell that keeping you from coming is fucking impossible” Yoko sighed. Referring to the time where she’d literally have to ban Enid from coming to the bar. Not because she’d been unruly or drunk. But just because she’d been hanging out whenever Yoko had a shift and was apparently Killing the vibe

“ooooooor, you could tell her yourself” Enid suggested. Having had the idea that Yoko and Wednesday really ought to spend more time together outside of Yoko serving drinks or the two of them ganging up on her

“if you’re trying to drag me to another one of her fencing matches it is not happening” Yoko scoffed moving her spoon around the small puddle of milk in the bottom of her bowl “so don’t even try”

______________________________________________________________________________

Pushing the doors to the gym open Enid took a small moment to enjoy how the smell of old gym-mats and the clanging of swords had somehow grown familiar to her. A moment that was entirely ruined by the long-drawn-out groan from Yoko beside her

“why did I let you drag me out here?” Yoko said, sounding even more dead inside than after pulling a double shift. Which Enid thought was a bit dramatic

“because I promised to buy you lunch and you’ve been craving those cheese fritter things from applebee’s” Enid shrugged before looking out across the room searching for Wednesday. Not having her usual black suit to help her as they seemed to be divided into fencing drills and more traditional exercises. Wednesday being in the latter group. Enid thankful that she’d foregone her usual workout fit for a shirt and joggers

“well at least the view is nice” Yoko teased having obviously followed Enid’s line of sight and was now staring down towards the girls who seemed to be busy running between neon cones on the floor. Enid really having no idea what that was about

“could you behave yourself?” Enid scoffed as she dragged her eyes away from Wednesday and instead focused on scanning the stands. Quickly catching sight of Kent who’d apparently seen her as well as he was sending her a knowing look that Enid in no way liked

“hey if you’re going to drag me here I’m going to enjoy myself” Yoko shrugged as she followed Enid her eyes still glued to the other end of the room “and it’s no fair that you’re the only one who gets to ogle a fencing babe”

Enid turned around to shoot Yoko a death glare at the latter comment considering they were definitely within hearing range of Kent. But Yoko was either ignoring that or genuinely so caught up in checking out people that she didn’t notice. Enid not liking either option

“long time no see” Kent smiled as Enid sat down next to him. Yoko following right behind. The two of them not having seen each other for a couple of weeks due to Enid’s temporary hiatus from practice as well as the fact that Kent hadn’t been there the last few times

“it’s nice to see you too” Enid smiled before turning slightly to gesture towards Yoko “this is my roomie, Yoko. Yoko, Kent”

“Wassup?” Yoko nodded while flashing Kent a way too wide smile and a peace sign. Making Enid groan in the process since it was apparently clear that Yoko had decided to be a royal pain in the ass

“so...” Kent said slowly trying to move on from Yoko being... Yoko “a little birdie told me you went to the match at Kenwood?”

“yeah?” Enid said not really sure where this was going. Especially since she was pretty sure she’d already told Kent about going “Wednesday invited me so we drove up there to watch” she continued nodding her heads towards Yoko to indicate who the we in question were

“yeah I figured as much” Kent smiled “the little birdie might also have mentioned that you and Addams had a run-in with Amanda Grayson?” he continued

“…who?” Enid said seriously not knowing where this conversation was going or who Kent was talking about

“the leftie girl” Yoko butted in. Still looking towards the other end of the gym but clearly listening in despite pretending not to “the one who was giving Gothy attitude”

“that’s the one” Kent nodded meaning Enid now at least knew who he was talking about. Which somehow didn’t help her understand why he was bringing it up

“yeah. She was being really weird after Wednesday beat her” Enid said doing her best to recall exactly what had gone down “kind of a sore loser I guess”

“probably didn’t have much to do with losing” Kent said before seemingly realizing that Enid had no idea what he was talking about considering she probably looked as clueless as she felt “her brother is in the same club as Tyler Galpin” Kent explained which made Enid’s eyebrows shoot up and was actually enough to make Yoko look towards them as she recognized the name as well. Enid quickly turning towards her to shoot her a look so she’d shut up. Yoko thankfully taking the hint this time

“Tyler?” Enid asked playing dumb hoping that Kent might spill the beans. Feeling a little like she was going behind Wednesday’s back, but the curiosity had been just about killing her. And she was only human after all

“oh shit yeah you weren’t here for all that” Kent said. Enid getting the feeling that dropping Tyler’s name was usually enough for people

“he and Addams used to be... I wanna say friends but none of us were ever really sure what those two were” Kent explained. Enid shooting a quick glance towards the other end of the gym making sure Wednesday wasn’t about to suddenly appear behind her as she always did. Relieved to see that the shorter girl was still busy

“they’d come to each other’s matches, and he even managed to drag her out to a party that someone from his club was throwing” Kent continued with Enid listening attentively. Really wondering why in the world Wednesday would ever willingly hang out with a guy like Tyler

“he’s a real piece of work” Yoko scoffed making Enid glare at her

“oh yeah totally” Kent said seemingly not paying much attention to the fact that Yoko knew the guy “last I heard he’d been suspended for getting into a fight with a ref. Though he stopped coming here a while before that”

Enid nodded along. Not exactly surprised to hear that Tyler was the type to fight the refs. The look in his eyes back in the store having screamed trouble. But none of this really explained why him and Wednesday had been friends in the first place. Or why they were now very much not.

“Bianca actually thought they were dating for a while” Kent added offhandedly. Which earned Enid pointed look from Yoko. Enid just rolling her eyes in response

“which is kind of ridiculous” Kent added with a scoff right as their attention pulled back out towards the gym as a whistle reverberated throughout the room. Weems calling the girls to her to talk before sending them off to the locker rooms

Enid glanced towards Kent considering whether to keep pressing the Tyler issue in order to get more information. But the moment had clearly passed as Kent was now spying for his friends in the crowd and Enid also knew there was now a real chance that Wednesday would appear any second. So instead, she let the subject lie and instead followed suit and tried finding Wednesday in the crowd of people. Which was useless as usual. The other girl always the first one to the showers.

A short twenty minutes later Enid happily made her way down the stands and walked to meet Wednesday. Now in her much less heart attack inducing day clothes. Wednesday nodding to greet Enid, her eyebrows shooting up slightly as she caught sight of Yoko

“she forced me to come” Yoko said as they met up. Clearly having seen Wednesday’s sceptical look. Enid groaning in response

“I didn’t force her. I just said it could be fun” Enid explained

“plus she bribed me with food”

“I suppose that explains why you waited until the end of practice to arrive” Wednesday said Enid’s eyes widening slightly at the fact that Wednesday had apparently noticed her walk in

“that was actually because it took Yoko ages to get ready” Enid said inclining her head towards the girl

“because you asked me five minutes before we had to leave” Yoko shot back which Enid had to concede. It had been kind of a last minute decision to drag the girl along

“I suppose she’ll be joining us for coffee?” Wednesday asked not getting involved in their fight

“if it’s not a problem?” Enid said suddenly realized she’d kind of forgotten to check with Wednesday whether she minded someone else joining their coffee... date(?)

“not at all. I’m sure Eugene will be ecstatic to have a new customer” Wednesday said much to Enid’s relief

“okay I’m pretty sure you keep them in business with your cups of death alone” Enid grinned. Having learned that Wednesday’s coffee order was not only borderline lethal but also stupidly expensive since Wednesday insisted that Eugene charge her the listed price for eight shots of espresso

“Eugene has sworn to tell me once I reach a certain number and that has yet to happen”

“like when you spend a certain amount of money at the shop?” Enid asked. Wednesday nodding in response “and what is supposed to happen then?”

“He said he was going to bake a cake to celebrate. And he did not seem dissuaded when I told him I don’t particularly like cake”

“okay so skipping over the absolute crime that you don’t like cake” Enid said holding up a finger to make Wednesday know she took this very seriously “do I even wanna know what that number is?”

“Considering you’ve expressed concern with the amount of money I spend on coffee. Probably not” Wednesday deadpanned which just made Enid roll her eyes

“well then you can at least let me pay for Yoko’s coffee” Enid said adamant to not be completely dependent on Wednesday. And considering she’d already have to set money aside to take Yoko to Applebee’s it wasn’t that much more

“of course. If she still intends to join us” Wednesday said glancing behind Enid. Enid turning her head to follow and realizing that Yoko had slipped away at some point and was now talking with Kent and... Bianca? All of them standing in a small group of people that Enid didn’t know but was pretty sure were the posse that usually surrounded Bianca

“uhm.. I’ll just go ask” Enid grinned wondering how in the world Yoko had even managed to sneak away considering she was usually about as quiet as a bulldozer demolishing a china-shop. Enid quickly turning around and making her way towards the little group. Kent nodding at her as she approached while the rest were too caught up in their conversation to notice

“uh Yoko. We’re kind of getting ready to leave?” Enid tried while reaching out and tapping her roomie on her shoulder. Only for the taller girl to turn around and shoot Enid a look over her glasses that made it quite clear that she was probably not going to be joining them for coffee. Which was a look that Enid usually only saw when she’d interrupted Yoko talking to someone at the bar and she was kind of really wondering what the hell Yoko was doing as she slowly made her way back to Wednesday. Who was watching her with an amused grin as she approached

“sooo Yoko is apparently busy” Enid said smacking her lips while rocking back and forth slightly not really sure how to explain the sudden change of plans to Wednesday. Mainly because she wasn’t exactly sure what was going on yet herself

“yes I figured as much” Wednesday said with the same, almost imperceptible, grin on her face. Which still made Enid’s stomach flutter dangerously “do you think she will be alright without you here?”

“oh yeah she’ll definitely be fine without me” Enid said as she glanced back towards her friend. Who had definitely moved closer to one of the other girls in the small group. Enid rolling her eyes as her theory was confirmed

“please just get me out of here” Enid groaned wanting to do literally anything but watch Yoko try and flirt. That being a car crash she’d witnessed way too much already

Wednesday just nodded before turning and walking towards the door with her bag. Stopping to make sure Enid was following before the two of them made their way out onto the parking lot so Wednesday could deposit her bag before they started towards the coffee shop

________________________________________________________________________

Walking in after Wednesday and taking a deep breath of the warm mixture of honey and coffee permeating the air, Enid excitedly stepped into line. Glancing briefly towards the menu before locking eyes with Eugene behind the counter and waving. The barista waving back before resuming on getting the other customer’s drinks done

“so she pretended like she didn’t know her for the rest of the year” Enid said as she turned back towards Wednesday to continue their conversation from the walk over. Enid having decided that if Yoko was going to ditch her Enid could at least have fun by sharing some of the dirt she had on her “though she kind of had to drop the act after they got put together for a biology project”

“and now she’s interested in Divina” Wednesday said pulling a face at the notion. Which probably wasn’t helped by Enid telling the horror stories of Yoko’s high school dating life

“that’s who she was talking to?” Enid said halfway remembering that the name had been mentioned in passing before

“she certainly seemed to be cozying up to her when we left. And since I can’t imagine anyone being attracted to Barclay that seems like the most likely option” Wednesday said which just made Enid roll her eyes

“oh yes because no one would be attracted to the literal Olympic level athlete” Enid teased earning her a sideways glance from Wednesday as the two of them stepped up to the counter

“always nice to see my best customers” Eugene smiled as they approached Enid already spying Wednesday’s usual being prepared. The drink taking a little extra time since there was no fast way of pumping out eight shots of espresso

“just the usual for the both of you?” Eugene asked glancing between the two of them. Wednesday just nodding while Enid made sure to say both yes and thank you. Having earned her own usual order as of late. Which was in fact just Eugene surprising her with a drink since Enid always had trouble picking something and really wanted to try everything they had to offer. The deal being that she had to provide feedback since he’d sometimes try new ideas as well. Which she had so far been a huge fan of

“soooo Yoko and Divina” Enid said after they’d moved over to the other end of the counter

“I take it you’re nervous” Wednesday said looking at Enid quizzically

“I mean a bit” Enid shrugged. Lying through her teeth really. Which Wednesday seemed to pick up on based on the disbelieving look “they just don’t seem very... nice” Enid said carefully not wanting to insult people that Wednesday spent a lot of time with

“plus Yoko usually has super terrible taste in women” Enid added quickly earning her another look from Wednesday which was definitely trying to tell her to calm down

“admittedly Barclay’s personality usually scares away anyone in a five-foot radius” Wednesday said doing absolutely nothing to help Enid’s nerves “but she is actually capable of being nice to people when she wants to” Wednesday added sounding like she had some personal experience with both versions of the girl

“and Divina has always been her own person despite how much time she’s spent clinging to Barclay” Wednesday continued. Enid slowly realizing that Wednesday had probably spent a whole lot more time with the girls in question than she’d first anticipated

“how long have you guys known each other?” Enid asked now very much curious not just because Yoko was apparently putting the moves, what little she had, on one of them

“Barclay and I have been fencing in the same club since we were eight” Wednesday said matter of factly “I believe Divina moved here when we were twelve” she added after thinking about it for a few seconds

“you guys have known each other for almost seventeen years and you still can’t stand each other’s guts?” Enid said in disbelief

“our relationship has always been antagonistic in some way or another” Wednesday shrugged as if it was perfectly normal to be feuding with someone for that long. Which was longer than Enid had known Yoko. And she was her best friend

“though I suppose she is the person outside my family I’ve known the longest” Wednesday mused after a few seconds

“so what you guys used to have sleepovers and stuff when you were little and now you’re going to the Olympics?” Enid asked still not entirely comprehending the situation

“Of a sorts. We’d often share a room when going to fencing meets away from home. Though the only time I’ve been to her house was when I was invited to her sixteenth birthday” Wednesday said. Enid about to question that too when their drinks arrived, and they instead shifted their focus to find somewhere to sit

Most of their conversation after that revolved around how Wednesday had grown up. Enid finding the entire thing interesting. She knew about some aspects of it from her brothers being on the football team for as long as she could remember. Although there seemed to be a lot more travelling and staying at random hotels associated with fencing. Either that Or Wednesday just managed to go to more championships than her brothers. Enid leaning towards the latter option most

It was quite clear that most of Wednesday’s social life growing up had one way or other been connected to her fencing. The only real difference being her relationship with her brother and a few acquaintances she’d made at HEMA. Enid not really feeling like she was in any position to judge considering she’d not exactly been close to popular until high school. And even then it had been a pretty small group of friends

The most interesting part was still her seemingly contradictory relationship with Bianca. One second talking about her like a lifelong friend. Telling a story about their shared ritual if staying up and watching movies during hotel stays. Which had apparently always been difficult due to their radically different taste in film. And the next sounding like she’d rather plant a knife in her guts than spend five minutes in the same room. Which was an example that Wednesday actually used on multiple occasions during the conversation.

Enid contributed with her own stories from growing up. Although her high school life didn’t seem to have offered as many opportunities for hijinks as Wednesday’s. But nonetheless Wednesday seemed interested in what she had to say which was enough

It wasn’t until they’d both finished their drinks, Eugene having concocted some sort of white chocolate mocha for Enid, that a sudden realization suddenly hit the blonde

“shoot” she said almost cutting Wednesday off mid-sentence. The other girl raising an eyebrow at her Enid being quick to explain

“I just remembered that Yoko was my lift home” She said cursing herself for not realization sooner. Routine having taken over since she usually took the bus to see Wednesday “I totally forgot because of her schmoozing up to Divina and she’s probably left with them and I didn’t bring my bus pass today”

“I can give you a lift. If you don’t mind me running some errands first” Wednesday offered. Enid pretty sure that the last time she’d been in Wednesday’s car was on the night of the kiss. The reminder making her both cringe and feel fuzzy at the same time

“oh no I have some cash on me” Enid started to protest. Mostly out of politeness but part of her was also reluctant to go anywhere that might remind Wednesday of the night in question. Enid having also not been to Wednesday’s apartment since. Bar the time she’d confronted the woman

“Enid there is no need for you to take the bus” Wednesday said clearly not letting it be up for debate “I just have to pick up some groceries and I can drive you home”

Enid had to admit it was probably a little silly. Especially because she wasn’t entirely sure she actually had enough cash on her for a bus ticket. Though she could technically find a manned booth and use her card but she had no clue where to find one out here. Meaning she accepted Wednesday’s offer with a small smile and a nod. The both of them taking the last sip from their cups. Enid making a face at the mouthful of congealed chocolate syrup before they both got up and started walking back towards the rec centre. Where Yoko’s car was indeed no longer in the parking lot. Enid already planning to chew the other woman out for abandoning her there

The short trip to the store was made in relative silence. Which was only broken once Enid’s phone suddenly auto connected to the car’s stereo when she got a text from her boss. Wednesday telling her she was more than welcome to put some music on if she wanted. An offer Enid took her up on since she had truly run out of small talk at this point. Finding herself unable to think about anything other than her vague memories of how the shorter woman’s lips had felt against her own. Which was in no way constructive to her current plan of not crushing on her friend. Luckily the music offered some reprieve and allowed Enid to make small comments about the various songs playing until they pulled into the parking garage and Enid busied herself with trying to find an open spot that wasn’t too far from the entrance

Wednesday did suggest that Enid was more than welcome to stay in the car if she wanted. Promising to be quick with her shopping. But already feeling jittery from the drive over Enid chose to come along into the store. Not in any way surprised when Wednesday pulled out a grocery list scrippled down on classic yellow notebook paper. The shorter girl’s flawless handwriting neatly flowing down the paper

Enid did her best to help out as they made their way around the store. Making sure to grab a cart as they entered and grabbing stuff as Wednesday read from the list. While also taking a bit of time gawking at the store. Which wasn’t exactly exciting, but it had been a hot minute since Enid had last been in a whole foods. And they did have some stuff that her usual shop didn’t. Even if the prices made her wince a little bit

“we need any meat?” Enid asked absentmindedly as they walked past the cooler section

“I hardly ever use it so not today no” Wednesday responded glancing down at the grocery list before moving along. Enid following along, wondering if she’d managed to miss the fact that Wednesday was vegetarian

The huge amount of ready made salads they’d gotten from the produce department did speak in favour of it. Though Enid was forced to abandon the theory a couple of minutes later when Wednesday threw a couple bags of jerky into the cart as well.

“so what’s on the menu tonight?” Enid asked in yet another attempt at small talk after she’d caught herself staring when Wednesday stretched to grab a bag of oats. Which very much was not friend behaviour and she needed something to distract herself

“a salad” Wednesday said glancing towards Enid

“the Mexican-caesar one” Wednesday expanded taking Enid’s silence as her expecting more information rather than the fact that Enid’s brain was definitely not running on full steam “followed by a serving of yoghurt and thirty grams of muesli” Wednesday continued

“I don’t cook very often” Wednesday said her voice even more stiff than usual. Enid realizing that the other girl was apparently taking her silence as Enid somehow judging her. Which was more or less the exact opposite of what Enid was doing.

“really? Couldn’t tell from the breakfast you made for us” Enid said meaning it. The way to her heart definitely going through pancakes

“Even I can figure out scrambled eggs and pancake mix” Wednesday said sarcastically

“oh no I totally get it” Enid quickly responded “I’m pretty sure Yoko and I lived off of cup noodles when we first moved in together. It was NOT pretty” Enid laughed a little at the memory. Before realizing that comparing that to Wednesday’s cooking skills probably wasn’t too flattering

“I mean not that Yoko can cook now” She tried to add in some attempt at fixing it “I mean she says she knows the perfect recipe for microwave noodles. But usually, I cook. Not that you need to cook”

“Enid” Wednesday said stopping Enid babbling before she managed to stick her foot further down her throat “I get it” the shorter girl said thankfully not sounding insulted despite Enid’s best attempt at making a fool of herself

“admittedly I have refrained from cooking because it rarely fits into my daily schedule” Wednesday added Enid fighting the urge to assure her that she didn’t need to explain herself “besides it’s easier to meal plan like this”

“oh yeah totally” Enid laughed trying not to reveal the closest she’d ever gotten to meal planning was texting Yoko asking what she wanted for dinner and then shopping for stuff that might work together. Their best effort being sometimes planning a couple of days ahead

“what do you and Tanaka usually eat?” Wednesday asked as they continued down the aisle. Enid starting to wonder what the two girls had against just using each other’s names

“I mean it kinda depends on what’s on sale but we had curry yesterday. And a chicken pasta I’m pretty good at the day before that” Enid said not adding that the chicken pasta was actually her mom’s recipe. The main reason she knew to cook as well as she did being that her mom insisted that it was something every woman ought to know

“sounds delicious” Wednesday said as she grabbed a few green smoothies from the cooler

“it’s not much” Enid shrugged at the compliment “plus I kind of have to make sure it’s stuff that Yoko can bring to work a lot of the time cause they make her work real wacky hours”

“and Tanaka never cooks?”

“she’d literally burn the kitchen down” Enid giggled. Thinking about coming home to the entire kitchen full of smoke because her roommate had been craving a grilled cheese “though sometimes she decides I deserve a night without cooking and makes me sit on the couch while she makes us both cup-noodles and puts on a movie”

“it is good to know gallantry is not dead. Even though I doubt it compares to your cooking” Wednesday said looking a little smug at the dig at Yoko’s concept of spoiling Enid

“okay I’m not that good in a kitchen” Enid brushed off the compliment until an idea popped into her head “But I mean if you wanted I could maybe show you a recipe or two? Nothing fancy or anything. But you can get pretty far with some pasta and a jar of pesto” She suggested trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. The pesto and pasta combo being a pretty serious staple in her and Yoko’s apartment

“I... wouldn’t be opposed to that” Wednesday said after a few seconds. Quickly glancing towards Enid who just flashed her a smile. Still not wanting to make Wednesday think she as somehow judging her eating habits “the only homecooked meals I get are usually when I eat dinner with my family”

“oh do you guys do that often?” Enid asked her curiosity more than piqued whenever Wednesday mentioned her family

“once a week if our schedules permit it” Wednesday said making Enid’s heart squeal at the thought of gloomy Wednesday still going home to eat with her family every single week “which usually just means if my practice doesn’t get in the way or that father doesn’t have some sort of business trip planned. Since Pugsley still lives at home” Wednesday explained. Enid nodding along wondering why an antique dealer would need to go on business trips

“that actually sounds really nice” Enid said trying to imagine the event. Which was more or less her toying with the idea of what kind of parents resulted in someone like Wednesday.

“all of them are unbearable. But yes, it is... nice” Wednesday admitted after Enid shot her a look. Enid smiling sweetly in response

The rest of the shopping trip went along without a hitch. Enid’s eyes only bulging out slightly at the price once they reached the registers. Wednesday merely swiping her card and calmly checking the receipt afterwards. Seemingly happy that everything was correct as she threw it out at the nearest trash can.

Enid spent most of the drive back to her apartment asking whether Wednesday was sure she didn’t need any help with the groceries. With Wednesday repeating that it was in no way necessary and that she was used to doing it alone anyways. Not that this stopped Enid from offering at least three times more before Wednesday stopped in front of her apartment and gave her a look that made it quite clear she’d be fine. Enid taking the hint and saying her goodbyes before hopping out of the car and making her way up. Finding the apartment empty despite how long she’d been gone

_________________________________________________________________________________

It wasn’t until much later that night that Enid finally heard the front door open from her spot on the couch. The blonde reaching over and pausing her show as Yoko appeared in the hallway

“Do I even wanna know why you weren’t home for dinner?” Enid asked raising a teasing eyebrow towards her roomie

“I don’t kiss and tell” Yoko shrugged as she fell onto the couch

“you already kissed her?!” Enid exclaimed

“no. She kissed me” Yoko said which did nothing to remove Enid’s jaw off the floor “what? Just because you’re not making out with a fencing babe doesn’t mean I can’t”

“okay rude. Especially since you fricking left me stranded earlier” Enid said crossing her arms

“you had the ice queen to ferry you around”

“Don’t call her that” Enid half snapped jumping to Wednesday’s defense out of instinct more than anything “she doesn’t like being called that” Enid added when Yoko shot her questioning look over the rims of her glasses

“you might want to tell her fencing buddies that” Yoko said with a shit eating grin on her lips that was definitely rubbing Enid the wrong way

“buddies is kind of a strong word I think”

“eh I don’t know that Bianca girl was pretty damn quick to defend her” Yoko said which was more than a bit surprising to Enid

“really? Wens makes it sound like they’re mortal enemies half the time” She wondered out loud

“I’m not saying that they like each other. Just that she was the who shot it down whenever they others took it to far” Yoko clarified pulling out her phone and typing out something “maybe they have a truce going on or something”

“yeah... maybe” Enid mumbled pretty sure no one had told Wednesday about the truce if that was the case

“I also kind of got invited to a party in a couple of days” Yoko said pulling Enid from her own thoughts as she turned to look at the other girl “it’s at some bar and they said I was welcome to bring you if I wanted”

“and you wanna go?” Enid wasn’t entirely sure on the idea of alcohol considering how well it had gone last time. But then again she couldn’t even remember she’d been invited to something like this

“I mean it would be nice not being the one pouring the drinks for once” Yoko shrugged. Smiling slightly at something on her phone. Enid willing to bet she knew who the other girl was texting

“and Divina will be there” Enid added smugly which was at least enough to make Yoko roll her eyes in response

“yes she will. And how the hell do you know her name?”

“you did leave me with someone who is scary observant and has known those girls since like ever” Enid pointed out which Yoko had to begrudgingly agree to until she suddenly lit up

“oh do you think she could give me pointers?”

“I mean... maybe. Didn’t you guys already kiss though?” Enid said admittedly not sure if Wednesday was the person to go to for romantic advice for a... myriad of reasons

“she pecked me on the cheek when I got out of the car earlier. Doesn’t exactly count” Yoko sighed. Enid laughing at the admission

“if you think it’ll be alright with the others I could bring Wednesday along, and she could like wingman for you. Or tell you Divina’s favourite drink at least” Enid suggested “only ask them about the bringing her part though” she amended. Even if it was obvious

“you wanna bring Wednesday to a bar?” Yoko said the suggestion having been enough to pull her attention from her phone as she was now looking at Enid critically “after what happened last time?”

“I’ll just not drink” Enid shrugged. Ignoring the fact that the thought was making her feel more than a little anxious “I can spend time around her without everything going sideways you know”

“yeah but I was thinking start off small. Like those super gay coffee dates you guys go on” Yoko shot back. Clearly taking too much pleasure in how Enid pulled a face at the comment

“those aren’t dates. And I did start small. We went shopping today” Enid defended herself “it’ll be fine”

“...right” Yoko kissed her lips before going back on her phone. Tapping away at whatever Divina had said now

_________________________________________________________________________________

It only took about thirty seconds inside the bar before Enid knew that it in fact wasn’t going to be alright. Firstly the place was a mess. Whatever concerns Wednesday might have had about Yoko’s workplace were sure to pale in comparison to this place. The bar was located down some random ally and Enid had honestly thought it was closed down, or possibly condemned, until they’d tried the door and walked into the poorly lit, loud and sticky interior.

Second of all Enid had never been exactly great with new people. She liked to think she’d gotten better over the years, but the thought of spending the night with Bianca and her posse was still sending shivers down her spine. A fact that Yoko had clearly picked up on and had therefore spent the trip over trying to reassure Enid. Which had more or less consisted of her blabbering about how Divina was. Which, while she was happy that her friend was happy, had quickly become a lil much for Enid.

And thirdly, and worst of all, Wednesday had agreed to come along when Enid had called her and asked. Which in itself wasn’t all that bad. In fact having someone else she knew had seemed nice a nice idea at first. But Wednesday had clearly heard Enid use the word party and had dressed accordingly. Her shoulder-less top looking great on her, but also revealing way more skin than Enid had seen since their workout together. Which was sending Enid into a tizzy as they walked up to the tables where the fencers had apparently set up

“Div, hey!” Yoko exclaimed, waving excitedly as she ran over to greet the other girl. Leaving Enid alone less than a minute after entering the place. Traitor

Yoko’s outburst of course made everyone there turn around as well, meaning Enid was now staring straight at Wednesday, really hoping her face wasn’t as red as it felt. Or that the poor lightning was making it less obvious at the very least.

Wednesday seemed to finish up her conversation with the girl she’d been speaking with. A girl from the fencing club that Enid had honestly never learnt the name of. Before moving towards Enid. Flashing her an expression which by her standards were a polite greeting

“hey Wens” Enid spoke, forcing her voice to not come out squeaky. But nonetheless taking the time to enjoy the slight uptick of Wednesday’s eyebrows at the nickname

“we are in polite company Enid” Wednesday said sounding somewhere between exhausted and chastising. Which was probably her hinting heavily that nicknames were not to be used around the fencing girls. The look in her eyes threatening unspoken violence. Enid making a note to definitely use the nickname again later

“Not really sure I’d call this company polite” Enid glanced around the room. Shooting some over the top side-eye towards the skeezy looking people gathered in the dark corners of the room. Which all seemed direct opposites to the loud and energetic group of girls who were seemingly having the time of their lives. Enid looking over Wednesday and seeing that Yoko had found herself a comfortable spot next to Divina who was busy chugging a line of shots along with Kent

“I would be forced to agree” Wednesday muttered shooting just as much side-eye as Enid. Although hers was directed mostly towards her club-mates than the remaining clientele “but from what I gather this is apparently Divina’s favourite establishment. Not that I had expected any different”

“be nice” Enid chastised

“the floor is sticky. Enid” Wednesday argued. Lifting her boot slightly. The resultant ripping noise furthering her point well enough

“okay yeah this place is gross” Enid said trying not to move her own feet too much “but I’m sure there’s a reason Divina likes it”

“they have a three hour long one fifty cent beer special” Wednesday deadpanned

“I mean… that is pretty cheap for beer” Enid tried. Not in any way surprised that the draw of this place would be cheap alcohol. Since it really didn’t seem to have anything else going for it

“yes I am sure you and her will be able to bond over your love of cheap beer in exchange for personal safety” Wednesday said a small sneer on her lips as the last words flowed off of them

“oh… I mean, I wouldn’t want to get in the way of Yoko doing her thing” Enid said shooting another glance past Wednesday. Yoko now excitedly showing something on her phone to the rest of the table. Wednesday eyes following Enid’s this time before turning back and giving Enid an unimpressed look

“were you planning on spending the entire night standing in a corner instead?” Wednesday asked raising an eyebrow in challenge

“oh no I just didn’t…” Enid said her voice faltering slightly as she really didn’t know what her plan had been. Other than try to stay as inconspicuous as possible. Which had been partly due to not wanting to get in the way of Yoko’s flirting. But mostly because the idea of confronting the fencing team still made her nervous

“I am certain you didn’t” Wednesday said. Grabbing hold of Enid’s hand and pulling her towards the table. Enid barely having time to realize what was happening before they were standing in front of the other girls

“Wednesday there you are! And you brought your reporter friend. Enid right?” Bianca said flashing Enid a smile that felt much more genuine than what Enid had expected considering how Wednesday had described their relationship. Though she still felt Wednesday tense up slightly beside her

“oh… yeah. Hi” Enid smiled back. Slightly thrown off by the fact that Bianca had remembered her name. Enid fairly sure they’d only ever talked together that one time

“we were beginning to wonder where you’d run off to” Bianca said looking at Wednesday again who still hadn’t returned her greeting “but I guess you had to take care of this one first”

Enid felt like she should be insulted by the comment. But it was delivered with another smile so genuine that she was ready to dismiss any rudeness to be a figment of her own imagination

“I was gone for less than five minutes” Wednesday responded sounding neutral enough that Enid was now sure she’d imagined the hidden knife in Bianca’s word

“must have felt like longer” Bianca shrugged before gesturing towards the bar “Kent went to go get drinks. Your order is still just scotch over ice right? And Yoko said she had your order covered Eens. Not sure what she got you” Bianca continued Enid having to pull herself together at the use of the nickname

“I do remember agreeing to drink anything that this place serves” Wednesday remarked drily which made Bianca kiss her lips in frustration

“chill okay? We’ve been coming here for a year and you’re not going to get sick from the drinks” she said which Wednesday didn’t outright agree to. But both Enid and Bianca seemed to take her lack of protest as sufficient agreement

“and don’t worry I made sure to tell Kent to ask for their top shelf stuff for you. Not that this place would know good scotch if it bit them on the ass” Bianca finished and Enid swore she actually heard Wednesday laugh. Or maybe just scoff

“that much we can at least agree on” Wednesday shook her head as she walked the rest of the ways to the table and pulled out a chair for herself and Enid. Plopping down next to Bianca which Enid took as a good sign

As Kent came back a couple of minutes later. Begging a bit for help with the rest of the glasses. Drinks were quickly distributed across the table. Wednesday getting a glass of amber liquid that she deemed “acceptable” while a big glass of something red and poisonous looking was placed in front of Enid. Who leaned over to give Yoko her the best wtf expression as she pointed at her drink. Yoko just silently urging her to try it. Which Enid did. The drink being so-so, but in no way what she usually ordered. Which she masterfully relayed to Yoko via a range of facial expressions. Who just shrugged before leaning over and sipping from her own, identical drink.

“okay yeah maybe not the best example” Bianca laughed stirring her drink with the toothpick which had in fact not had an olive on it when the drink arrived “but if we’re talking good remakes the new Halloween movie is a pretty fair shout”

“I rarely enjoy remakes of horror classics” Wednesday added. Having until now participated sparsely in the conversation. Unless addressed directly by either Enid or Bianca

“oh don’t be a movie snob Addams” Bianca snapped. Enid’s eyes darting towards Wednesday. Certain she was about to react violently to the insult “it has great cinematography that calls back to the original. Plus it has a final girl being a total badass. It’s right up your freaking ally and you know it”

Surprisingly enough this critique did not result in Wednesday jumping at Bianca’s throat. But rather had her silently sip her scotch before holding up a hand in surrender. Something Enid didn’t think she’d ever see

“maybe I have judged it prematurely”

“exactly. We have to organize a movie night at mine so you can actually watch it” Bianca said which seemed to surprise both Enid and Wednesday

“that… could be nice” Wednesday said hesitantly. Which Bianca was apparently content with as she nodded before turning towards one of the other girls who had begun talking to her. Enid looking at Wednesday whose face betrayed nothing until their eyes met and she shrugged slightly as to tell Enid she didn’t know what was going on either.

Enid pushed the door open. Really appreciating the cool night air on her face after spending literal hours cramped around a table with a dozen other people. This being a much-needed break for her to stretch out her sore limbs as well

So far everything was still going surprisingly well. Bianca and Wednesday were still talking to one another and Yoko was getting along so well with Divina and her friends that Enid was downright having a hard time getting her attention. Which she should maybe take personally, but she was just happy to see her friend so heart eyed over someone for once.

Enid was pulled out of her own thoughts as she felt someone walk up beside her and instinctively took a step. Thinking she might be blocking the door more than she thought she was

“aw there’s no need to walk away sweety” a voice drawled making Enid look up only for her to be face to face with a guy who was already way too far into Enid’s personal space. Enid quickly looking down and ignoring him. Eyeing the door hoping for a chance to slip past him and back inside to the group

“we were hoping to talk to you a little” The man continued. Taking another step forward and forcing Enid further against the alley wall. Realizing that the we he was talking about were another three guys who must have been standing off to the side until now. All of them boxing Enid in

“I’m just waiting for my friends” Enid mumbled eyeing a gap between the approaching men and going for it. Stopping dead in her tracks when the leader moved to block her. His hand now on her arm

“well why don’t we wait with you then?” the man said. The hand that had been placed on Enid’s arms closing with a subtle but firm pressure that made Enid jerk away instinctively. Realizing too late that she’d been pressed into a corner. The man’s hand locked around her arm like an iron band

“let go of me!” Enid yelled trying to pull her arm free again as well as throwing a clumsy punch at the man’s head. Both of which did pitifully little as the man merely pulled Enid closer to herself

“why don’t you try to behave bitch?” the man sneered into Enid’s ear before twisting her arm behind her back. Grabbing hold of a fistful of hair as well when she tried to headbutt him. The man grinning sickeningly at the yelp Enid let out at the sudden pain

“now that’s better” the man whispered his mouth so close to Enid’s face that she could smell the cheap beer and cigarettes on his breath “so how about we try and have so-”

Whatever the man was planning on saying died in his throat as he was interrupted by someone yelling out. Enid not catching whatever had been said but everyone present looking up at the interruption. Enid having never been so grateful to see Wednesday walking towards the group of men. Whatever she had screamed clearly spurring the remaining men to action as they tried to block her. An effort that was scarcely as effective as they’d hoped

Withing seconds it became clear that there was a clear difference between watching Wednesday practice and her actually wanting to hurt someone. The first man folding over from a solidly placed punch to the chest before he’d fully realized what was happening. The second following soon after. Thrown to the ground after he’d tried to grab hold of Wednesday’s arm the same way the leader had done to Enid

Enid was pulled back as the man holding her took a few steps backwards at the sight of his friends being thrown to the ground. Wednesday moving towards them rage painted across her face in a way that Enid had never seen before. Her eyes boring into the man holding Enid with such an intensity that it was a damn miracle he wasn’t turning tail and running. With such an intensity that she wasn’t paying attention to her surrounding enough to notice the last of the men flanking her

Enid yelled out to warn Wednesday. But by the time she turned her head toward the assailant the man had already gotten close enough to try and get a hit in. The kick was sloppy. The man being both half drunk and clearly untrained. But there wasn’t time for Wednesday to move out of the way and Enid’s eyes widened in terror as the man’s foot connected with Wednesday’s leg. Her knee buckling and Enid swore it bent the wrong way for a second before Wednesday went down with an audible grunt as she hit the ground. Worryingly not getting up as the man took another step towards her

“GET AWAY FROM HER!”

Enid was vaguely aware that it was her that had screamed. But she only halfways processed that fact as her body started moving out of instinct.

In all honesty Enid had played a little dumb when Wednesday had tried showing her how to fight. Living alone in the city and growing up with three older brothers there was no way in hell Enid hadn’t picked up a thing or two about defending herself. Like how to force her arm out of the man’s grip despite the pain and elbowing him in the gut before moving forward. Barely registering the pain as the man refused to let go of her hair when she did so

And she’d definitely known how to throw a punch before Wednesday had showed her. Her fist connecting with the jaw of the man standing over Wednesday with as much force as Enid dared out behind it. The man stumbling a few steps before falling on his ass. Happily not getting up as Enid turned back towards the groups leader. Who was sure to be on her in seconds once he recovered from the gut-punch

Or at least he would have if the door to the bar hadn’t slammed open at the same exact moment. Some guy Enid had vague memories of seeing behind the bar storming out with murder in his eyes

“what the hell is going on out here?!” he bellowed looking between Enid standing by Wednesday and the men scattered on the ground

“these bitches are fucking crazy is what!” the leader of the group seethed waving his hand towards Enid and Wednesday

“I ought to call the cops on your damn asses” the barman returned. Clearly not buying whatever bullshit the other man was trying to feed him

“that won’t be necessary” Wednesday suddenly said. Still sitting on the ground. Everyone looking down at in her amazement. Including Enid who was ready to protest in order to get these assholes to jail until her eyes met Wednesday’s, who was currently looking at her with the closest thing to a pleading expression that Enid ever thought she’d see on her face

“uhm... yeah we’re fine” Enid said choosing to trust Wednesday rather than her gut on this one. The barman giving her a disbelieving look which she just returned until he seemed to get the message

“whatever you say then” he sighed before holding up an accusatory finger towards the men who were still slowly picking themselves off the ground “but I want you fucks out of here”

The sentiment was met with angry grumbles as the men tried to challenge the order. The barman quickly shooting them down again and silently watching as they made their way back down the alley. Enid taking some amount of pleasure in the way one of them was limping along

“and you two ladies are sure you don’t want me to call someone?” the barman asked shooting a final concerned look towards them. Enid sharing in his sentiment as Wednesday had still not gotten up from the ground

“we’re fine” Wednesday half snapped. Enid flinching slightly at the harsh tone before looking towards the barman and nodding in confirmation. Which was apparently good enough for him as he retreated back inside

“thank you” Wednesday mumbled a few seconds after the door had swung closed leaving the both of them alone in front of the bar yet again

“it’s fine” Enid said back trying not to feel annoyed at the way Wednesday had made the decision without even thinking about what Enid might want. Her annoyance not helped by Wednesday seemingly insistent on getting her attention by rubbing her hand against her leg

“I said it was fine” Enid snapped more harshly than she’d meant to about to apologize as she looked down at Wednesday. Only to be met with an exasperated stare from the other girl

“I’m trying to say I need your help getting up Enid. I can’t bend my leg” Wednesday said sounding strained but not angry considering how furious she’d been moments earlier

“oh shoot. Wednesday!” Enid gasped as she bent down frantically letting her eyes run over Wednesday’s body as if she’d been able to somehow see the injury “are you okay? Why didn’t you say something?”

“I’m perfectly alright” Wednesday said groaning slightly as she adjusted herself “are you?”

“what? Yeah those guys were just assholes” Enid laughed trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to start pouring

“you’re bleeding Enid” Wednesday said her eyes making it clear that she didn’t believe Enid for a second as Enid followed her gaze and pressed her fingers against her temple, flinching slightly at the unexpected pain. Her eyes widening as her fingers came back wet with blood. Her hand shaking slightly as the adrenaline was beginning to wear off

“it’s just a scratch” Enid shook her head before focusing back on Wednesday who was still stuck on the ground “can you even stand?”

“possibly” Wednesday said holding out her hand again. Enid actually understanding her this time and grabbing hold of her hand to help her stand. Hauling Wednesday up where she tentatively tried standing on her injured leg. The limb giving out under her as soon as she seemed to put any weight under her

“okay you need to go to the hospital” Enid said as she had to suddenly support Wednesday’s entire body weight. Extremely thankful that as out of shape she was, Wednesday was still tiny

“I can’t” Wednesday groaned having the good grace to look slightly sheepish at Enid’s disbelieving glare

“any version of me going to see a doctor results in my mother finding out” Wednesday elaborated in an effort to soothe Enid “and once my mother finds out, Weems finds out and she pulls me from the championship”

“which you shouldn’t compete in if you’re freaking injured” Enid shot back barely believing how insane Wednesday was being right now

“I refuse to back down from a match just because I failed to notice some imbecile who had audacity to touch you” Wednesday said. A surprising amount of venom leeching into her voice as she spoke. Enid knowing well enough that it wasn’t directed towards her.

“well I refuse to just leave you like this” Enid argued. Holding Wednesday’s stare for several long seconds before Wednesday sighed realizing that Enid wasn’t going to let this go

“can you drive?” Wednesday finally asked

“okay what is it with you and Yoko?” Enid exclaimed pulling a face at the question “I have a license”

“I am asking if you are fit to drive because you have been drinking and I don’t know if I can with my leg” Wednesday said shooting Enid another look

“oh. Yeah I’m good” Enid said “I only had that weird fruit thing Yoko got for me so it’s fine”

“good. My car is not too far away” Wednesday said glancing at Enid silently saying she’d definitely need help getting to the car. Which Enid had already guessed considering she was currently holding up more of Wednesday's bodyweight than Wednesday herself

Luckily the walk to the car was shorter than Enid had feared. And soon they were on their way to wherever it was that Wednedsay had decided to go. Which she still hadn’t divulged to Enid. Instead opting to give directions while they were driving. Enid following them silently as they weaved their way through the city

In the silence of the car the last of whatever adrenaline had kept Enid going finally ran out completely, and the shock of what had happened seemed to settle fully. Enid finding herself unable to stop a steady stream of tears after a while. Wednesday didn’t comment on Enid’s crying. Which she was sure to have noticed considering the sniffling that accompanied it. But she did slowly move her hand over to rest on Enid’s thigh. The movement slight and gentle considering that Enid was driving. But Enid nonetheless flashed Wednesday a quick smile to show her that she appreciated the gesture

After driving for a while Wednesday told Enid to pull over. Enid dutifully doing so in one of the surprising amounts of empty spaces on the street they’d arrived at. Getting out of the car and helping Wednesday out. Half carrying her over to a door that Wednesday pointed out. Enid seriously starting to question what they were doing here. Only becoming more confused when Wednesday leaned over and pressed one of the buttons next to the door. Holding it down for longer than what was in any way polite at this time of night

“it is me. Open the door” Wednesday said as someone picked up on the other end. Their voice too muffled by the intercom for Enid to make out what they’d said. But surprisingly enough the door clicked open a few seconds later. Enid and Wednesday scuffling inside now coming face to face with the stairs

“there isn’t an elevator in here Wens” Enid said glancing worriedly at Wednesday’s leg which she was still not putting any weight on

“I am unfortunately aware. It’s only two floors up if you think you can handle it” Wednesday said. Sounding slightly apologetic at basically asking Enid to carry her up the stairs at way past midnight in some strange apartment building. Which she really didn’t have to since Enid would have carried her for the rest of the night if that is what it took. But she still appreciated the sentiment

Struggling up the stairs the two of them managed the trip and now found them face to face with a guy standing in the door of one of the apartments. Who looked reasonably pissed off considering they’d probably just woken him up. The fact that he was dressed in just boxers and a shirt cooperating that fact

“Wednesday you can’t just show up here” the guy started almost as soon as they’d stepped onto the landing “Like I want to see you too but I literally just got on good terms with Bianca again and she’ll skin me if she finds out about you being here in the middle of the ni- shit what the fuck happened?”

The guy’s expression changed from ticked off to shocked and worried in a fraction of a second. Stepping further onto the landing and holding out his hands as if Wednesday was seconds away from keeling over. Enid taking slight offense to the latter

“some guys jumped us” Enid answered before Wednesday had to chance to say something rude

“what? Why aren’t you guys at the hospital?”

“she’s refusing to go” Enid said. Her tone making it clear that she thought it was just as insane as it sounded. The guy looking towards Wednesday with a puzzled expression

“Weems will pull me from the tournament if she finds out” Wednesday explained which clearly wasn’t what the guy wanted to hear as he threw his arms up in frustration

“oh you have got be kidding me. Wednesday-” he started before Wednesday cut him off

“I did not come here to be critiqued Xavier” Wednesday said not leaving much room for argument “you’re free to refuse to help if that’s what you want and we’ll leave”

A challenge that Xavier didn’t respond to further than shrugging after a few seconds. Enid seriously hoping Wednesday wasn’t smirking next to her

“you’re still certified as a first aid assistant are you not?” Wednesday asked on top of her victory

“uh yeah but that does not make me qualified for this you know that right?” Xavier said his eyes widening slightly

“yes. But you can tell whether the injury is superficial or if I need to medical attention” Wednesday argued

“and you’ll go to the hospital if I say you need to?”

This time it was Wednesday’s turn to stand in silence. Enid rolling her eyes because the answer to that question had been painfully obvious from the getgo

“jesus christ... at least come inside” Xavier sighed moving backwards into the apartment and making room for Enid and Wednesday to pass. Making sure that Enid could handle moving Wednesday as they moved into the apartment after him.

The inside of the apartment looked like most places that Enid had seen in the city. Run down wooden floors with wall to wall carpeting starting as soon as you got more than a few feet into the apartment. The kitchen joining up to the living room to their right with Enid spotting what looked like a bedroom and bathroom a little further inside. The most striking difference was the permeating smell of paint that hit Enid as soon as they walked inside the apartment proper. The source becoming clear as they walked past a door on their left which led into what looked like an improvised studio. The floor covered in plastic tarp and an easel set up in one corner of the room

“you guys can sit down on the couch and I’ll go put on some actual clothes” Xavier said gesturing towards the living room before walking towards what Enid assumed was his bedroom. Suddenly stopping and turning back towards the two of them

“uhm you’ll probably have to be... undressed for me to really see anything” he managed to get out after stumbling over the words a few times. Enid having to fight the urge to giggle at how red faced he was

“yes, I have been examined before” Wednesday deadpanned to which Xavier just nodded before hurrying off down the hall

“although I will probably require some help getting my pants off” Wednesday added. Enid feeling almost all of her blood rush to her face at the prospect

Getting Wednesday down on the couch was fairly simple. After which Enid busied herself with untying Wednesday’s boots and gently pulling them off. Trying to will her heartbeat to still before she reached the main task. Which involved waiting for Wednesday undoing the button and zipper on her slacks. Followed by Enid pulling them down while Wednesday hovered on her good leg. All of which was accomplished with far less of Enid’s hands on Wednesday’s backside than Enid had feared

The real challenge came as Enid had to ease the pants down Wednesday’s legs. Each inch seeming like it was sending sparks up Enid’s arms. Seeing Wednesday’s legs when they were working out and running her fingers down the taut muscle. Enid unable to resist the urge to dig her fingers in a little harder than necessary and revel in the way Wednesday flexed in response

Luckily the entire ordeal was over quickly and as soon as Wednesday’s pants were off Enid’s pulled her hands back to herself. Only a bit faster than what might be considered normal. Which Wednesday didn’t seem to notice as she was probably preoccupied with her knee. Enid telling herself that the glances she was stealing towards the other girl were in fact just to check up on said knee. Which didn’t look too bad in Enid’s opinion. Although admittedly she didn’t know all that much about first aid and most of her brain was preoccupied with Wednesday’s thighs and thanking whoever was listening that Wednesday had opted for boyshorts today rather than something more... revealing

Xavier returned a few minutes later. Seemingly less bashful about the situation now as he kneeled down and gently grabbed hold of Wednesday’s leg

“okay so there’s not a whole lot of swelling. How long ago did it happen?” Xavier asked as he slowly ran his fingers over the knee. Wednesday not making a sound but Enid noticing her jaw tensing slightly at the prodding

“about forty minutes ago give or take” Wednesday responded. Her voice not betraying it if she was in any pain

“well I guess that’s good swelling vise” Xavier mumbled mostly to himself “can you move it?”

Rather than answer Wednesday instead chose to demonstrate by slowly bending her knee ever so slightly back and forth. Although the it was clear from her face that this was far from painless

“alright so I don’t think it’s anything too serious” Xavier said with a small sigh “you’re probably going to be bruised to hell and you’re definitely staying off that leg for the foreseeable future. And if it doesn’t get better in the next couple of days you have to see a doctor”

“of course. I’m not inane” Wednesday said shooting Xavier an annoyed look

“I think that’s up for debate at the moment. Do you still have that knee brace from a couple of years ago? Wear that then” Xavier continued when Wednesday nodded in response “and also you’re gonna take this”

As he talked Xavier dug his hand into his pocket and pulled out a cell phone which he tried to hand to Wednesday

“you know I despise these things” Wednesday said looking down at the device with obvious disdain

“yeah but this isn’t up for debate. I don’t want you waking up being unable to walk and then have to crawl down the stairs to get to your own phone “ Xavier said with a note finality as he stared down Wednesday until she rolled her eyes and grabbed the phone from his hands. Holding it in front of herself as one who had no wish to be holding the object at all

“there’s a few minutes on it already but you’re going to have to go down and get a contract for it. We both know you have the money for it” Xavier cut in as it looked like Wednesday was about to object. Enid seriously impressed that he hadn’t been killed for talking to her like that yet

“I’m hoping you can help her with that?” Xavier said looking over at Enid

“yeah, sure” Enid nodded almost getting caught checking out Wednesday’s legs again

“good” Xavier said smacking his knees before turning back towards Wednesday “and you just please go to the hospital if it swells up too much or you haven’t regained more movement in a day or two okay?”

“I have already assured you that I am not an idiot. I can take care of myself well enough” Wednesday bit back. Her focus still split between the conversation and the phone which she was testingly playing with

“please make her go to the hospital” Xavier said directed towards Enid the two of them exchanging small smiles at Wednesday’s expense before Xavier’s eyes flicked towards Enid’s forehead and he frowned aq

“I have some gauze for that if you want?” he said pointing towards Enid’s temple. Enid having almost forgotten she was even hurt

“Oh no it’s fine really” Enid tried only for both Xavier and Wednesday to shoot her a look that made it clear that it had been a rhetorical question. Meaning that two minutes later Enid was sitting quietly while Xavier disinfected the wound and stuck bandaged it with an overflow of adhesive strips. Trying his best to avoid Enid’s hairline

“I’m really hoping you guys aren’t hiding anymore injuries” Xavier said sitting down with a sigh. Enid starting to feel a little bad about barging into his home in the middle of the night. But also intensely relieved that Wednesday hopefully wasn’t too hurt after all

“do you need me to pull out the couch?” Xavier asked looking towards Wednesday while pointing at the couch she was sitting on. Which Enid realized was a pullout. Possibly to make up for the fact that Xavier had converted the second bedroom into an art studio

“I believe we will be fine” Wednesday said looking towards Enid for her opinion. Enid smiling slightly at being included before nodding slightly. Fairly certain that the two of them could handle the trip back to Wednesday’s place.

“if you say so” Xavier said before being overcome with a yawn Enid following soon after slowly starting to realize how tired she was “And not to be a bad host but I do have classes in the morning so I think I’ll go and at least try to get some more sleep tonight. When you leave remember you have to-“

“jiggle the handle. I know” Wednesday finished the sentence for him. Xavier just nodding before pushing himself off the floor and retreating back towards his bedroom

“goodnight” Enid said which was returned with a wave over his shoulder before he disappeared from sight. Enid not wasting any time before helping Wednesday back into her pants. The covering of her tanned legs being both a welcome reprieve and a curse.

Not long after the two of them made their way out of the apartment once again. Wednesday limping along while clinging onto Enid’s shoulder. Enid quickly finding that going down the stairs was in fact not easier than going up as she’d hoped. But nonetheless they managed to make it back down to Wednesday’s car. Enid popping into the driver’s seat and getting them home under Wednesday’s direction

It wasn’t until they’d arrived at Wednesday’s apartment. Parked the car in the underground garage and made it all the way up to Wednesday’s apartment, Enid having never loved the sight of an elevator so much. That Enid realized she hadn’t thought about a way of getting home. Enid quickly pulling out her phone to check the bus schedule

Wednesday in turn looked up from where Enid had deposited her on the bed. Clearly understanding what the problem was before Enid even had the chance to explain

“you are welcome to stay the night Enid. I have no intention of throwing you out”

Enid looked up from her phone locking eyes with Wednesday who was staring at her. Wednesday’s eyes seeming softer than usual. The dimmed lights of Wednesday’s bedroom not helping the situation. Enid having to force down a sudden frog in her throat before being able to answer

“oh… I actually have work tomorrow” Enid said. Hoping she sounded convincing. Not really wanting to explain to Wednesday that the reason she didn’t want to stay for the night was that the entire experience brought back memories of soft lips pressed against her own. Now accompanied by the feeling of steel cable muscles flexing beneath her fingers. None of which was helping Enid in any way

“in that case feel free to borrow my car. I do not imagine there are any busses running at this time” Wednesday said sounding not at all like she just offered to borrow Enid a vehicle that cost more than Enid’s apartment

“oh Wens I couldn’t” Enid started to protest until her attempts were silenced by an unimpressed glare from Wednesday. As well as the fact that a small glance down at her phone revealed that the next bus really didn’t arrive until five am. Not exactly ideal

“I will hardly be using it myself for the time being Enid” Wednesday said gesturing towards her leg which was currently propped up atop a bundle of pillow. Enid finding something charming about Wednesday’s small shape surrounded by the myriad of pillows on her large bed

“besides I trust you to return it” Wednesday added along with another look that really made it obvious that Enid didn’t have the choice to reject the offer

“okay… uhm, what kind of gas does it use?” Enid said trying to be practical about this even if she still thought this was way too much

“the tank is almost entirely full so I don’t imagine you will need to add more. But if the need arises regular unleaded will suffice. Do you still have the keys?”

“yup” Enid smiled pulling the key from her pocket. Which was really more of a fob than actual keys. Seeing as they were the kind that didn’t actually have a key on them. “do you need anything else here?”

“I will be perfectly fine”

“good that’s good” Enid said feeling the silence of the room pressing on her “and thank you by the way. For saving me I mean” Enid added not sure she’d actually said it until now

“there is hardly a need for thanks for stopping horrible parasites from touching you” Wednesday said Enid hating the memory but noting the way anger seemed to seep back into Wednesday’s voice as she mentioned it

“well I’m still saying it” Enid said meeting Wednesday’s challenging stare at her insistence “and I’m sorry you got hurt”

“It will heal” Wednesday said sounding more annoyed than anything. Enid having a sneaking suspicion that she was more ticked off about not being able to work out than anything

“still. You can call me if you need anything at all” Enid offered a smile before remembering the parting gift Xavier had left Wednesday with. On top of the free medical care which Enid really should remember to send him a thank you note for “oh and you can just send me a text from your cell and then I’ll have the number”

“ah yes… texting” Wednesday said. Enid unable to supress a small giggle at her tone

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out” Enid smiled as she got ready to leave “but seriously anything comes up just call okay? It’s the least I can do”

“duly noted. Do get home safely” Wednesday offered hardly smiling at Enid as she left. But Enid liking to think that the other girl got fairly close. Which was a hell of a lot better than driving home in the middle of the night
