Forevermore
Of course Lena had known loss in her life. She had known a lot of loss. Somehow she always came through. She would never say that it had made her stronger, god no. She had lost parts of herself over the years. Surely those were essential parts of her. Bits and pieces scattered around and lost forever, or so she thought. But somehow life, or fate, whatever you want to call it wasn’t that cruel. No. It had sent her a lifeline, something so kind and hopeful and generous that even the darkest parts of herself felt drawn to it. When she finally did let it pull her out of the darkness, it’s like she discovered a new life, a new purpose in her life. She finally had something to live for, rather than surviving to prove anyone and everyone wrong.
So when Alex finally came after what felt an eternity too long, she was clinging to her lifeline, to Kara. Kara who by now had lost whatever color she had left in her cheeks. Kara who by now had gone limp in her arms. Kara whose breathing had become more and more shallow. Kara, Kara, kara…
Lena lost track of time, the next hours past in a blur. One minute she was sitting crumpled on the floor holding the woman she loved, watching her bleed out and unable to do anything about it.
The next, Alex Danvers was yelling orders and asking her questions, but she only heard muffled sounds. Everything around her made no sense. Why were they trying to take Kara from her? Why was she moving? Where was she going?
Of course she knew all the answers to those questions, but somehow her brain didn’t want to function properly. It wouldn’t allow her to concentrate on anything else but Kara. Kara was dying. She had to save Kara. She had to save Kara, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t do anything apart from looking.
Alex had arrived at Lena’s without really knowing what to prepare for. Lena had told her Kara had an internal bleeding and that her little sister didn’t have much time left. But Alex knew that Lena could be irrational when it came to Kara.
So she arrived at L-Corp, storming in Lena’s office praying to god that Lena was being irrational, even though she knew. She knew Lena had a medical degree and that Lena was a scientist and that scientists were able to see the truth even when overwhelmed, also Lena was a genius. And geniuses rarely make mistakes.
But Alex kept on praying. She kept on praying when she saw her baby sister unresponsive in the CEO’s arms (even though in that moment Lena Luthor didn’t look like a CEO. She looked like someone afraid, someone terrified of losing their love). Alex kept on praying as she saw her sister put on a stretcher looking oh so small. She kept on praying as she saw that stretcher being wheeled out of the office and put into the elevator. Alex kept praying to see her sister’s eyes open again.
The director turned back around to the second most petrifying sight today. Lena Luthor, the strong and ruthless Lena Luthor, was kneeling on the ground, facing the door where Kara had just been wheeled out. Both her hand palms were facing up and Alex could see them visibly shaking. She knelt down in front of her and took Lena’s hands in her own. She looked in those eyes to see dilated pupils. Lena’s breathing was rapid, way too rapid. Alex knew. This was shock.
“Lena, honey I’m going to loosen up your shirt okay?” Alex unbuttoned the first two buttons on Lena’s expensive black shirt. She took the white YSL cardigan and put it back on Lena’s shoulders. As much as she wanted to be with Kara now, the rational part in her told her that she couldn’t do anything to help her. What she could do now, was help Lena. She called a new stretcher up to get Lena to the DEO as smoothly as possible.
Lena felt something on her shoulders, how she was slowly lifted off the ground and back onto something that surely felt like a bed. She couldn’t think about it for too long though. All she could think about was Kara.
At one point she arrived at the DEO. She became more and more lucid. Her coordination was back again. She could walk out of the ambulance at the DEO, but only to go running into the bathroom to throw up whatever was in her stomach. As she hunched over the toilet, she could feel someone stroking her back and holding her ponytail in place. Lena was grateful for that person. She turned around and saw that it was Alex. At the sight of her she broke down completely. Thankfully Alex was there to hold her as they both sank to the ground in the bathroom stall. The redhead tried to hold it together for Lena, for herself, but that didn’t last long.
Mere seconds after Lena, Alex broke down in sobs. They were both shaking and holding each other for what felt like hours. Alex was the first one to calm down again. She patted Lena’s back and massaged her scalp until she too was calming down. When Lena felt ready, she stood up on shaky legs and let herself be lead to the waiting room.
She didn’t want to sit on the comfortable couch, but preferred the floor. Alex joined her soon after. They both sat close to each other and taking the others comforting presence in.
Four hours and fifty-three minutes. Four hours and fifty-three minutes was how long it took for the doctor to tell Alex that her sister was out of surgery. Not that she had counted.
“Director Danvers, your sister’s surgery went as well as could be expected. We did have to perform an emergency Laparotomy, to get her bleeding under control and she is now resting under the sunlamps. She should make a rapid and full recovery once her powers have come back. If you have any questions don’t hesitate.”
“Thank you Doctor.”
Lena was alone in Kara’s room. Alex couldn’t quite escape her director duties as an emergency came up so yeah, Lena was alone with Kara. She was holding her hand and didn’t plan on letting go anytime soon. The look she had on her face as she looked at the resting Kryptonian was one of worry and adoration. So when the blonde twitched her hand, Lena could have started to cry from relief.
“Hey darling”
“Lena?” Kara’s voice was week, but all Lena could think of is that it was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.
“Yes darling I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. Could you just open your eyes for me please?” the CEO practically begged. So when she finally saw those beautiful blue eyes that could put the most expensive Sapphires to shame, she felt a tear running down her cheek.
Kara slowly brought her hand to Lena’s face and wiped the tear away. Lena gave a tearful smile.
“Oh Kara, I’m so glad that you’re okay. Please don’t play hero without your powers again.”
Kara hummed a bit.
“Rest now darling” Lena still hadn’t let go of Kara’s hand. If someone asked her, she never would.
Kara’s eyes started to droop, but before she fell asleep again, she mumbled something that none of them would have admitted sober, three little words that would change the course of their lives forevermore.
“I love you”
