Chapter 10
By the time i woke up, the others had set up camp outside. Alaina and Joey were outside heating up some food while im guessing Ezekiel and Evan had set up a perimeter as the katana i was using wasnt infront of me anymore. I looked over at the back and the kids were asleep. I step out of the car, and they greeted me with a soft good evening.
I stretch my whole body, it felt nice to release some tension. I notice my reflection in the car, and i looked bloodied. I cant let the kids see me like this. I get my bag from the trunk, taking out some thick clothes as its getting colder and colder as the time passes by. Before getting changed, i also took out some sturdy black boots. I wiped my body first using the wet wipes and changed my clothes inside the car. It was alright for me to do this considering the windows were tinted.
I layered my jeans with some leggings beneath it, changed into a black long sleeve and putting on a winter coat. I also changed my shoes. Once i was done, Ami had woken up. "Good evening Amiii, how was your sleep honey?" I said sweetly.
Ami was yawning her little hands covering her mouth. "It was okay." Ami said solemnly. I felt bad, Ami wasnt like how she was. She got up and sat beside me, she was leaning her body against mine. Instinctly, i put my hand in her hair, softly massaging her head. "Nikka, im scared... what if we get eaten by zombies?" She whimpered out, her lips quivering.
"Its okay honey, i wont let that happen, Big sis Nikka will take care of you and Aime and ofcourse everyone too." I said to her as i smiled.
"You promise?" She said as she held out her pinky finger, her eyes looked like it was about to cry. "Promise." I said as i crossed my pinky with hers, smiling at her and continuing on with massaging her head. We sat in comfortable silence until Aime had woken up. She went to me so i put Ami on my lap as i hung my arm lazily to hold Aime close while i hummed a lullaby.
Soon Evan and Ezekiel had arrived. They were holding on to the katana and a handgun. Evan gave me a thumbs up, i guess he's saying that it was safe. "Do you guys want to go out and eat with the others?" I asked them. At first, they shook their heads but once i reassured them, they wanted to go out and eat with others. We stepped out the car, hand in hand. Once they were near the others, they run up to Joey.
I went to Evan and Ezekiel, they informed me that there was a nearby town that looked empty. I asked them how far it was as we were near the woods. They told me it was a mile or two. I only nodded my head and we went towards the camp fire. We ate in comfortable silence, there wasnt any tension in the air.
Once we were done eating, we laid down the car seats at the back, making a makeshift bed. The bags were at the second row. The kids were delighted that they would be sleeping without their backs or necks hurting. Me and Alaina were entertaining the kids, Evan and Ezekiel took a short nap, while Joey stood watch outside with the katana in his hand. It was dangerous for him to be alone so once the kids driftes to sleep again, i came out of the car with him, taking my recurve bow.
"The kids are sleeping soundly." I said to Joey, he only hummed in response. "Thats.... their coping mechanism, they sleep and sleep and dont have that much energy when they wake up. They sleep to get away from reality. Thats what their therapist said when their mother died." Joey confided to me. It mustve been hard on them, poor kids.
"If you dont mind me asking, what happened to their mother?" I asked, "She was in a car accident, a drunk driver hit her car when she was on her way home." Joey said softly, his eyes contorting pain and sadness. "How about you and Ezekiel?" He asked.
"Our father left when Kiel was born, and after awhile mom was okay, but then she started feeling lethargic, and getting sick, so we took her to the doctors. She was... diagnosed with Cancer. Since we didnt have a stable income i started taking jobs considering our other family relatives hid from us." I told him as i looked up in the sky, the stars were out and it was such a beautiful sight.
"Thats so...." Joey trailed off, "I know, but its okay now. Atleast Mom isnt in pain anymore." I said, my tone conflicting between sadness and pain.
We continued on talking, i eventually told him about my plan to go to the nearest town here and stay for awhile. As we were talking, snow started falling from the sky. I hold out my hand, the snowflakes breaking once they hit my palm. "Its snowing...." i mumbled. I hand my bow to Joey the look of confusion evident on his face. I opened the car door, waking up the kids and Alaina. They looked at me confused, and i only smiled at them mouthing the words "Its snowing."
The kids immediately sat up, looking at the window. Once they saw it was snowing, their faces contorted to happiness and excitement. They put on their shoes ready to step out of the car. Evan and Ezekiel soon woke up by the noise of the kids giggling. I only chuckled before getting the kids some new clothes to warm them up.
"Dad, look! Its snowing!" Amilia said excitedly, taking a scoop of snow from the ground and throwing it in the air. Joey laughed, "Yes honey, its snowing."
Aime might not be as cheerful as Ami but her eyes glistened in excitement as she held the snow in her hand. I smiled its so nice to see them happy. Suddenly a snow was thrown at me. I looked over to who it was and it was Ezekiel, he was holding a ball of snow in his hand, smirk plasted on his lips.
"Oh you are so gonna get it Kiel." I said as i gathered snow from the ground, throwing it at Ezekiel but he ran away so i hit Evan who was beside him. Ezekiel stuck out his tongue at me, while Evan blinked his eyes in confusion. Once he realised the situation, he started piling up snow in his hand and throwing it at us.
The kids laughed loudly, also joining on our Snow fight. Laughter and happiness surrounded us, forgetting our worries for the time being.
