Chapter 1 - James
To say this was embarrassing would be an understatement. James is currently getting his arm wrapped up because he tried to beat his best friend, Sirius in a race. On skateboards. Being pulled by large rats. Any sane person would’ve thought that it was a bad idea, but anyone who has met James and Sirius would also know that they are not sane people.
“What on God’s green Earth were you two doing??” Poppy was yelling, waving her arms around. She was rushing back and forth between helping James with his arm and Sirius with his ankle in the infirmary.
“Sorry Poppy,” James and Sirius said in unison. They glanced at each other and burst out laughing.
Poppy sighed and finished with James’ arm. “You can go, Mr. Potter.” She turned to go over to Sirius but turned around and quickly added, “You can remove the bandage in a few hours. I’m expecting Minerva would want to see you for your next mission.”
James nodded and headed out the door. The walk to Minnie’s office wasn’t too far, but James could feel the weight of everything suddenly on his shoulders. He was going on his first mission out in the war. He knows that logically, this wasn’t fair. To have young kids fighting in a war just seemed wrong. It is wrong, but James also knew that it was for a good cause.
James turned a corner and walked right into Remus, one of his best friends.
“Oh, hey Moony!” James said cheerfully, “Where were you?”
Remus looked like he just came back from a mission. His clothes were all dusty and his hair was ruffled in a way it would never normally be.
“Out on a mission,” Remus grunted, shifting slightly on his feet, “I need to go see Poppy, someone did something to my leg,” He proceeded to gesture down to his left calf and James sucked in a breath.
It looked like he was badly burned by something. The skin around the wound was swelling and red.
“Oh, of course! She’s helping Sirius right now,” James hopped to the side to give Remus some room to walk. He nodded a thanks and limped quickly away towards the medical room.
This was one of James’s many fears. He hates how this war is putting all of his friends in danger. But then again, they did sign up for the Phoenix. They did know the risks. James just wishes that he could keep everyone from getting hurt. If he could, he would take their place if it meant they would be safe. But of course, that wasn’t possible.
James walks up to Minnie’s door and knocks three times. He could hear some shuffling of papers and someone running around the room. 10 seconds later, he could hear a brisk “Come in,” from inside the room.
James pushes the door open and steps inside the cozy office. Minnie had recently redecorated and so her office still had some boxes lying around. The progress she made already looked amazing. She had a small fireplace by the window in the corner of her office. There was a big bookshelf next to the door that was filled with books and picture frames. Some of them had James and his friends, and others had Poppy and Minnie’s wedding.
James walked up to the big desk in the middle of the room. Minerva was on the other side, sitting in a big leather chair. Her desk was full of books and scattered papers. She had a pen in one hand and was tapping restlessly with the other. When she looks up and meets James’ eye, James knows immediately that something is wrong.
“James,” she says carefully, reaching out to hold James’ hand.
He braces himself for the worst, but nothing could ever prepare him for what she says.
“Your parents’ vehicle was ambushed by some Dehundra spies and crashed. They were captured, but fortunately we were able to send some agents out, so we found where they are being held. As far as we know, they are completely fine, but your father has been sent into a coma from the impact of the crash.”
James couldn’t breathe. His legs were shaking and his head was spinning. The last thing he remembers before blacking out is Minnie jumping up from her seat and rushing around the table to catch him from falling.
