and how rare and beautiful it truly is that we exist

“Keep the blindfold on! C’monnn Mobi!”

“I am, I am.”

“I saw you trying to peek! Not allowed! Its a surprise for a reason!”

“…Okay. Okay.”

Mobius nearly tripped over her feet as she was guided by her wife, almost stumbling as she was dragged along behind Vill-V. Admittedly, she didn’t understand these holidays, when she was growing up they were days her father would be out of the house for most of the day. Leaving her alone in an empty home, only to come back the next morning, reeking of booze. She knew to avoid him until he asked for his medication.

Hearing such a day had an actual name, well, she found that out in college. She’d lie to a guy’s face just to go out with him to a party so she could get wasted, never truly liked the guys and would proceed to dump them after of course, and that’s all Valentine’s day really was to her. A day that people got wasted on. Obviously, though, being apart of the flamechasers proved that wrong. This wasn’t her first Valentine’s day with them by any means, but it would probably be the first one she’d actually remember.

It was her first year being married to Vill-V, and while not the first she’d be dragged around their home blindfolded, the first one she’d have a wife on such a day. She was grateful, to say the least.

“Okay! I’m gonna sit you down now… there! Now you can take it off!”

Vill was met with silence from the doctor, and she slowly slipped the blindfold off, blinking a few times. She couldn’t see shit. Mobius’s gaze flicked over to the excited inventor who was waiting for just about anything to come out of her lover’s mouth.

“…Dear.”

“Mhm?”

“I can’t see shit.”

“OH. RIGHT! SORRY- I’LL JUST UM—“

The blurred view of the brunette had the green-haired woman tilting her head a touch towards the left until she was handed her glasses. Mobius flicked the arms out, took the hem of her button-up, then wiped the lenses off quietly before slipping them on. She spent a few seconds adjusting how they rested against her face before looking up.

Before her, rested a large, old-timey projector that took film reels. Styled in brass and copper, bearing intricate, ornate trimmings resembling a spider’s web supported by clock hands. Across from the projector was a screen, drawn down. The material seemed to resemble aged paper, almost, with an off-white, yellowed tint to it. There were candies and treats laid across the coffee table next to the stand the projector sat on and judging from the packaging (or well. lack thereof…) they were homemade.

The sight before her was something she genuinely hadn’t expected, and Mobius sat there in complete silence for at least a minute, taking it in. Suddenly she felt very much outplayed by her own wife, while yes she had a gift planned, it was nothing as extravagant or showy as this. Then again she just… sucked at giving gifts.

“Wow. I um. Don’t… know what to say…”

“You don’t have to say anything! Just enjoy it-“

“It’s wonderful. That’s… yes that’s the word. Wonderful.”

“Oh! Hehe… doctor… you’re gonna make me blush!”

Mobius rolled her eyes, then gave a small hum before the other stood in front of her.

“Before I show juuust what this good ol’ projector is for, close your eyes one more time! I’ll try not to pull any more surprises! No promises though~”

The doctor sighed, playfully shaking her head before shutting her eyes. The inventor let out a content hum and opted to lean forwards, resting one of her knees against her wife’s thigh as she reached forwards with an object. Her prosthetic hand lightly grazed the skin of Mobius’s neck, sending shivers down her spine before reflexively, she flinched away and grabbed her wrist. Several moments of heavy silence hung in the air before the viper muttered a small apology and released her grasp on her dear lover. They simply let out a small chuckle and dismissed it,

“Forgot to let you know. Don’t apologize, dear. Here,”

A tender kiss was placed on her lips, and Mobius tensed initially, then soon relaxed. The other only parted ways after something was placed around the snake’s neck.

“Now you can open your eyes.”

Her snakelike eyes fluttered open and she was a little stunned by how close the other was to her. They had dated for several years, and yet, Mobius still wasn’t used to this. She felt warmth course through her cheeks and quickly averted her gaze to the side. A giggle from the engineer brought the doctor back to her senses and she looked down to the necklace resting over her button-up.

The pendant was round, and bore a signature gear design on the front. The maker of the jewelry took the object in hand and opened it, revealing a lovely photo of the pair on one side from their wedding, and on the other a watch.

“It’s solar powered! And I used the best batteries so hopefully it works for a good long while!”

“…You’ve really outdone yourself…”

“But we haven’t even started the movie! Or eaten anything that the Chef made! How can you say that already!”

“…Well, then lets start it.”

Mobius cracked a small, warm smile at the other which seemed to catch the inventor off guard before she quickly brought the viper into a tight hug. Vill-V seemed to be quite excited, and despite how tight and surprising the hug was, it truly didn’t take too long for the doctor to relax and loosely wrap her arms around her beloved.

The movie on the other hand. Never really got to start. Vill had prepared everything and done everything she could but the projector essentially burned itself and the film before anything could even be shown. Despite the disaster, Mobius didn’t mind at all. She simply got up and stood beside her dejected wife, placing a hand on her back and gently rubbing small circles into it with her thumb.

Nothing was said between the two as they stood in silence, and eventually the inventor leaned against the doctor, leaving Mobius to move her hand over to Vill-V’s shoulder.

“I appreciate your efforts… Even if it doesn’t work, I’m sure we can keep it after it’s cleaned up. You worked very hard on it after all… I’d hate to throw it out, Vivi.”

Luckily, that got the engineer to smile again and she nodded, although not another word was said for a few moments.

In the silence, eventually the doctor drew away, taking to her phone. She didn’t give the inventor any explanation before she sat it on the coffee table, neatly fixing the volume to its loudest setting as one of the few types of music that didn’t annoy her began to play. Yes, granted, it was from Eden. She did enjoy her music deeply though. Vill on the other hand, seemed just as perplexed as before. Judging from their expression alone, Expert was now handing things.

For the best, the Expert was likely as good at dancing as Mobius was.

“Mm. Come on, take my hands dear.”

“…Okay.”

The somewhat tired voice of the other said enough. Expert had probably worked on that device without a break. Mobius opted against saying much else as the inventor’s hands neatly were taken into the doctor’s own. Despite Vill being shorter, her hands were definitely larger than the doctor’s. Of course her prosthetic was, but so was the remaining hand that the engineer had.

It’s the little details, really.

The dancing was nothing like what happened at her college parties, where there was far too much physical contact and booming, awful music that overstimulated her. Nothing like the alcohol getting spilled everywhere and people getting inebriated on substances that she had only read about from her father’s books. No, nothing like that. It was slow, there was no flare to it, but it was comfortable swaying. Eventually, the pair moved on from just holding eachother’s hands to slipping into a mutual hug. One that did hold them in place, but was comfortable enough to simply idly sway even after the track had come to an end. A kiss was shared between the two, one that lasted for several, long, moments. Moments that Mobius would forever cherish.

When they finally moved on to the food, Mobius admittedly couldn’t help herself, despite most of it being treats and candies. While the candies were more of a surprise with each flavor, something she would assume would happen, she enjoyed everything truly. Sharing them with her wife (albeit cheesy and she’d never say it outloud) seemed to make them just that much better. While not her favorite food, the doctor had some plans for later.
