Banshee, Pennsylvania- June 21, 2014
“What’s this, Doc?” Clint Barton, known to the people of Banshee as Sheriff Lucas Hood, asked as he held up the slip of paper Dr. Lewis had pressed into his hand after checking out his various cuts, scrapes, bruises and fractured bones.
“That is my personal cellphone number,” She stated pointedly, the ‘obviously, you moron,’ was implied by her tone.
He gave her his go-to lopsided grin and ‘aw shucks, ma’am’ bow of his head. “Look, Doc, I’m flattered, really-“
She rolled her eyes and walked over to strip off her latex gloves and toss them into the medical waste bin. “Can it, Sheriff,” she snapped and then softened her face slightly as he jerked in surprise and then winced with the sudden movement. “That is not an invitation for a booty call. You may be one lucky son of a bitch, but you aren’t that lucky.”
He snorted and then raised an eyebrow at her, waiting for an explanation.
“I get that being a Sheriff can be a dangerous job, I do, but seriously, Hood, how many times have I patched you up in the last year or so?”
“Uh-“ the word was drawn out as he pretended to seriously consider the question.
“Too many to remember,” Dr. Lewis cut in, her scowl indicating that it had been a mostly rhetorical question and she knew he knew that and didn’t appreciate his smart ass attitude. “Probably more that I’ve treated any other person here in Banshee in my 10 years as the local physician, and definitely more than I’ve treated the rest of the people in your department combined. In those same 10 years. And that isn’t including the times you don’t even bother getting checked out.”
He opened his mouth to say something, but she just reached out and snapped her fingers right in his face, then shook her finger at him as if he were a bad dog or misbehaving child.
“Uh uh, I don’t want your excuses. It seems pretty clear to me that you have a certain way of doing things and I’m not going to waste my time asking you to quit getting into situations where you’re going to get your ass kicked. I have a sneaking suspicion you like getting your face split open and your ribs caved in. It’s your job and it’s your call. That’s fine. I personally think the fact that you’ve survived this long living the way you do some sort of miracle.”
She perched her hip against the sink and crossed her arms over her chest.
“We get it, you’re a tough bastard. My concern is that one of these days, you aren’t going to be tough enough, and then your luck will run out. It’s only a matter of time before you get yourself, or one of your deputies killed. I really don’t want that to happen, if I can help it. That’s why I’m giving you my number.”
She stepped forward and looked straight into his eyes now. She could do that with him sitting on the exam table. “The next time you think maybe you’re going to headed into a situation that might end up getting violent, I’m asking you to call or text and let me know so that I can be prepared and headed in the right direction at least. I’d feel better if I was closer at hand for these little skirmishes go down.”
“No offense, Doc, but I don’t exactly need you gett’n in the way while I’m trying to handle police business,” he hedged, reaching out his arm to offer the piece of paper back to her.
“I’m not talking about getting in your way. I, for one, do not have a death wish, and I have no desire to be in the middle of things when the violence is happening. The closer I am, though, the better chance you and your people will have if something goes really wrong. Okay?”
He looked like he might refuse again, but then simply nodded and tucked the paper into the pocket of his jeans as he stood up. “Have it your way, Doc. I’ll do my best to give you a heads up if I see trouble coming. As long as you try to keep in mind that I don’t always have much notice myself.”
“Anything is better than nothing at this point, Sheriff.”
He nodded and then gave her a wry-twisted smile. “Am I done here, then? Can I go?”
She snorted and shook her head. “For now, though I’m sure I’ll be seeing you again.”
“I’m sure you will,” he agreed and walked out of the exam room, his boots clomping loudly against the linoleum.

Doc: Never thought I’d hear those words from you.
(570) 555-2263: Technically you still haven’t

Doc: His people aren’t going to like me being there though.
(570) 555-2263: You gonna let that stop you?

January 8, 2016
“Hey, Doc, you need anything else before I take off?”
Darcy looked up from her desk of paper work and smiled at the young dark haired girl. “If you just turn off the lights on your way out, Katie, I’ll get the door when I go. You have a good night, and drive safe, okay? Those roads are awful.”
“Sure thing, Doc. Good night,” she gave a little wave and then disappeared from the doorway.
Dr. Lewis finished filling out the patient files from that day’s shift and stacked them in the out box for Katie to re-file the next day. Then she picked up her messenger bag and filled it with the things she wanted to take home and look over for the night.
Her bag held tightly in one hand, she lifted her coat and scarf from the hook on the back of her door and mentally prepared herself to brave the cold and snow outside. As soon as she flipped off the light and shut her office door she realized she could see light pouring from around the door to exam room 3, which was ajar. She scowled. It wasn’t like Katie to miss something so simple. The girl might be a bit of a troubled spirit with a rebellious streak a mile wide, but she was usually more vigilant than that.
She walked down the hall and pushed the door open to reach in to flip off the light. She froze halfway in when she realized the room was occupied.
Sitting on the table was the man she had known as Lucas Hood, perched right where she’d had seen him countless times. He was watching her like a hawk, his entire body relaxed and nonthreatening.
“Hey, Doc,” he said, daring a sheepish smile when she didn’t do anything or say anything for several moments.
“Don’t you ‘hey, Doc’ me, you son of a bitch,” she snapped and her paralysis broke. She dropped her things and strode over to him and slapped him as hard across the face as she possibly could. “How dare you come back like this, just show up out of thin air? 7 months!” She yelled and jabbed at him with her finger. “7 god damned months and not a word from you and you just think you’re going to pop in her and ‘hey, Doc’ me and what? That makes everything fine? Well it doesn’t.”
He had raised a hand to rub gingerly at the bright hand print on his cheek as he watched her rant and rail.
“I know it doesn’t,” he whispered after it was clear she was waiting for some kind of response. “I just got back, and I just wanted to see you. Needed to see you.”
“Oh you needed to see me? So you just popped in to say hi? Well what about me, huh? What about when I needed to see you? I oughta call the sheriff and be done with your sorry ass for good. At least, if you were in prison I’d know where to find you if I wanted to see you. Then I could just pop in and say hi whenever I felt like it. Then you could see how it feels.”
“I’d probably deserve that,” he said too agreeably.
“Oh, you’d definitely deserve that,” she said angrily, but she was running out of venom. She never had been very good at holding onto her temper once she lost it. “Where have you been?”
“Here and there,” he said vaguely. “Nowhere worth remembering.”
“Did you get your friend back, at least?” She was still huffing, but the tightness in her jaw wasn’t there anymore.
“Yes, I did.”
“Well, that’s good, I guess.”
“It is,” he said with a small smile.
“Have you been taking care of yourself?” she said, eyeing the yellow remnants of a black eye he still sported on his left eye.
“Bout the same as usual,” he admitted, and she scowled again, knowing that meant not at all. When she held her tongue, though, he dared to speak. “Are you done yelling at me, then? Or do you have more you want to get off your chest before I say what I need to say?”
Her nostril’s flared and he knew immediately that had been the wrong things to say.
“I haven’t even begun to yell at you, Hood, or Barton, or whatever the hell your real name is. If I started in on all the things I wanted to yell at you for I might never stop yelling, and I have to work in the morning, so-“
“You know?” he asked, looking slightly stunned.
“I do now, you lying bastard,” she said, her anger renewed.
“How?” he gaped.
“Katie,” she supplied, her face turning considering and then concerned. “Have you seen her, yet?”
He shrugged, “I saw her when she left.”
Darcy narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Did she see you?”
His eyes flinched with guilt and he looked away. “Not yet.” He shifted on the table, making the paper cover crinkle beneath his thighs. “I wasn’t sure how she’d take it, what with her dad and everything…” His voice trailed off. “She tell you everything, then?”
“Only what she knew. I put the rest of the pieces together myself, made some educated guesses.”
He nodded and stared at his hands. “I’m sorry I had to lie to you. I never meant for things to get so out of control. It was never supposed to be anything but a temporary solution. But when I found out about Katie, I just-“ He sighed and looked at her, pleading for her to understand. “I should have left. I know that. I just put her and everyone in danger, but she’s my daughter. I just couldn’t leave her.”
“But you did! You left her right when she needed you the most. Can you even imagine what the last 7 months has been like for her?”
“I know. I’m sorry,” he pleaded and reached out to grip her by the shoulders. “Tell me what to do, Darce. How can I make it better? If I stay everything gets fucked to hell and the people around me get hurt, or worse, and if I leave...” He searched her face as she stood before him. “Should I just go? Should I just walk away and never look back? If that’s what you want, if that’s what will make things better for you, then that’s what I’ll do. Just tell me!”
“Oh, you’d love that wouldn’t you? You’d just love it if I told you that you should pick up and run away. Well, too bad, cause I’m not going to justify your inability to stick around and take responsibility for your choices, you know, like a real person might have to do.” She jerked away from him and shoved his shoulder angrily. “You want me to tell you what to do? Why don’t you try not being a fucking criminal for five minutes?” She punched his arm again. “Instead of knocking over armored cars or stealing from the U.S. Army, why don’t you try getting an actual job for once? Huh?” Smack. “Then you can stick around and take care of your family, and be there for them, and you don’t have to worry about the mob showing up to fuck up your life, or have the FBI trying to hunt you down.”
In her rage, tears had started to pour down her cheeks, and when he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her to his chest he could feel them on his neck. She struggled only briefly and then melted against him.
“I thought you were dead,” she sobbed and he held her.
He held her until she was all cried out and silent.
Then he held her even longer.
He held her and he whispered all the bitter truths, and reassuring nothings, and the hopeful wishes that he had kept to himself for so long.
He just spoke, and he ached for what he had to say to be enough for her to let him stay.
