
Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes - "It Wasn't Supposed To Happen Like That"
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.”
Steve looked up from his sketch pad to the man on the couch opposite. Bucky speaking was far an inbetween.
“Huh?”
“This,” he gestured between the two of them. “This wasn’t how it was supposed to play out.”
Steve frowned and put aside the pad. “How do you mean?”
Bucky was frowning too. “It was supposed to be different.”
Steve didn’t speak, letting Bucky collect his thoughts.
“I was going to keep you,” Bucky said finally.
Steve blinked. That was not what he had expected. “Keep me?” he prompted.
Bucky nodded, more sure. “After the war.”
Steve blinked again and slid forward in his seat. “You were?” They didn’t talk about the war much.
Bucky nodded slowly. “In our apartment. I was sick of hiding how…how I felt.”
Steve flushed. Neither of them had admitted their feelings back then. Not till the war, till it was too late.
“I was going to come home and never leave you again.” Bucky remembered. “But then you became…” he waved at Steve’s body.
“Yeah,” Steve said.
There was a silence.
“But you’ve got me now,” Steve said.
Bucky considered that, and nodded once. “Yeah.
