Before (Bea POV)

“Oh shit. It’s 7:50, Dad.” George calls out. “We’re gonna be late.”
“We’re already late, idiot.” I tell him. “Get a clean outfit, we need to be heading out.”
It’s a full 20 minutes to the ball from our house, and I doubt they’ll be ready in 15, so I take the time to do my makeup. A maidservant offers to do it for me, but I refuse. They always make it so complicated. I just want it to be simple and quick.
I don’t think they’re used to me wearing suits and things. They don’t know how to do my hair, or makeup, because they want me to wear skirts and twirl for ‘my alpha’. But I am the alpha. I want an omega to twirl for me. Dad says it’s good I was an alpha, because he couldn’t deal with more heats than necessary, and by that he meant he only could deal with Mother’s. Now Mother is gone.
So I end up doing it myself most days. Like today.
“Bea!”
I hear George calling for me, and start rushing my makeup. “Just finishing my eyes!”
His footsteps pad up behind me. “Boo.”
“God, George, don’t do that. I could’ve gotten eyeliner in my eye.” I tell him.
“Yeah, but you didn’t.” He laughs, slightly. “Come on, we’re all ready.”
“Already?” I raise my eyebrow without turning around, knowing he’s watching the mirror. “I thought it would take you 20 years.”
He sticks his tongue out. “Just hurry up, will you?”
“No need.” I stand up, pushing my chair behind me. “I’m done.”
We take the stairs two at a time, rushing to ensure we don’t keep anyone waiting.

The car is already parked outside. There’s 6 seats in the back, plus the driver and the seat in the front reserved for Dad. There’s two cars, actually, and Uncle sits in the front in the other.
Me and George get squished into the back with six of our cousins.
“Wait, aren't we taking both cars?” George asks.
“We are, but my brother sleeps around a lot.” Dad laughs at his own joke. “No, the omega kids are in the other car. You lot need mates soon, so you’ll be taking mating powder.” he passes back a bag of the drug. It’s not actually a powder, it’s a pill, but it’s still powerful. As if reading my mind, Dad says,
“Don’t take too much, now. One pill per person. Two, you might accidentally go into a rut - and that’d ruin your reputation!”
“The others are in the other car because they’d force us into a rut?” One of my cousins, Robert, addresses Dad.
“No, because they’re taking the omega version, and yes, you could be forced into a rut, but if they were here, they’d be forced in a heat, which would be messy, to say the least.”
They mumble a bit, as none of them have ever actually seen a heat. One of them pipes up with a question they all seem to want to ask:
“What’s she doing here?”
I quietly raise my eyebrows. “You see me every day, Derek. I’m more of an alpha than you are.”
They all shut up after that.
