Zeref was next to Izou helping Marco with his clothes for his date with Kizaru. The two of them go on a date every once in a while and they get pretty lovey-dovey.
Akainu once called him to complain that Kizaru is always annoying when she went on a date with Marco, but he'd rather help her choose the dress to wear for the date and help her sneak out of the Headquarter than have to deal with an upset Kizaru after coming back from a date if he didn't help.
Marco, seeing that she was trying so hard to look presentable for her, decided to ask for help.

(Good thing they don't know what happens in canon where Caesar finds the kids and offers them candy to lure them to him.)
Now that they have found the children, they had to get them out of here and take them to Polar Tang to save them. Meanwhile the other members of the Straw Hats along with Law, Ace, Sabo, Smoker and Tashigi are distracting the guards causing destruction everywhere.
-Where the hell did they come from!?- Caesar Clown asks pulling his hair out of rage.
More than half of G-5 fell and they will soon reach the room where he is.

From the surveillance cameras it could be seen that Vergo met Smoker and Sabo, who began to fight. Law later came to the room where the three are fighting and joined the battle.
