Natsu didn't just say it because of the anime, but from personal experience. He was lucky enough to meet the man a while ago when he learned that Crocodile had a crush on him. He was able to speak with the stoic man and learned a few things.
As confirmed in the anime and admitted by himself, he is the type of person who would agree to do certain things or look for things to do just to kill time.
